I thought the two posts above were straightforward :?

If it radiates in the FM band then it is illegal.

If it doesn't radiate (i.e. uses cables), then it's not.

OK, While the devices that transmit are technically illegal, if you ensure you buy the very low power ones (approx 50mW), then using it inside your car isn't really gonna have the Radiocommunications Agency banging on your door. As your car is a big metal box, next to no modulated carrier will get out through the car and the little that does makes it such a short way that if someone happened to be tuning their radio while parked next to you at a traffic light, there's a chance that their radio would pick it up (although, as none of these devices transmit RDS then most modern car radios would need to be manually tuned to the correct frequency).

I know a few people who have bought these devices for their MP3 Players off eBay (for use abroad only, ofc), sold by a company using the user ID BroadcastWarehouse who have a site www.broadcastwarehouse.com, also if you're a budding radio engineer then www.nrgkits.com might be a good place to start.

Of course, these things are still ILLEGAL TO USE in the UK without a broacasting licence issued by the Radiocommunications Agency (www.radio.gov.uk) and if you do buy and/or use one you do so at your own risk. The author of this post does not condone any illegal actions taken by you.

Thanks for the welcome ;)

This is the only site I can find with stuff on for my smartphone, all the others seem to be of the format '..just $15.99 for this crappy casino game...'!

Thanks again for the welcome and hope I can put something back into the site

Seems to be the way of the net these days, even Google is getting hit badly, can't search for anything without being bombarded with ads to buy crap. I remember when it wasn't like that, it were all free, blah blah, down the mine at 6 years old, AND we were grateful!!

Right, dragging back OT:

Here is the low(ish) cost solution i used to get this working in my car:

A 2.5mm jack to 3.5mm adapter - £0.79p

A cassette adapter - £12.99

The cassette adapter is slightly more than i paid (as this one has a ciggy lighter power adapter with it too).

All works a treat! Just have a little hassle with the levels when switching back to Radio.

IM sure you can get them FM modulators that directly couple to the ariel of your car ad therefore arnt illegal. Just things like the Itrip that transmit a distance that are illegal.

Got one of them for my ipod, and well it sucks coz it aint just plug and play tipe, each track has to be associated with a frequency.. so aint useit it.. plus the wired solution sounds better.

Right people. Let's get this topic done & dusted.

All the legal wrangling is better than an episode of Law & Order or even CSI for that matter. It makes good reading, I'll grant you. But . . . .

. . . . . what we all really want to know is:

1. Of those people that have used or are using the Arkon transmitter - what is it like? Is it worth buying? Is the sound quality good? Do the AA batteries last long enough?

2. Has anyone that's used it been A) pulled over for it? :) Arrested for it? C) Seen using it and had a blind eye turned? D) Ever had nearby motorists complimenting them on their tunes?

Come on. No more sitting on the fence. Tell it like it is. At the end of the day it's up to us each as individuals to decide on whether we feel this is legal or illegal. It's us who'll need to face any consequences, isn't it?

Reviews of Arkon can be found here - but who really trusts such reviews?

Look forward to some truth.

WTF are you on about?? It either is illegal or isn't. It makes no difference as to what you THINK it is!

Transmitting in the commercial FM band in this country is illegal - full stop. It's up to you whether you want to break the law or not!

Shut up.

You're obviously an idiot.

'They' may well decide for once and for all what is and what isn't legal. At the end of the day we all decide for ourselves which laws to obey and which to 'bend'. Have you never gone above 30 in a built up area?

Things might be legal or illegal. The question in hand is though - ARE THEY ANY GOOD? (Arkons)

Either answer the question about the Arkon or visit

www.legalwranglingsforthesheerfunofitcosimasadfcuk.com

and take your moral preachings elsewhere.

I quite clearly asked for an answer about the quality of the product and not for a further legal debate. How could you possibly have misinterpreted it? (See 2nd line of post if you need an answer . . . )

Break the law. Have some fun. Listen to MP3s off your E200 in your car. Go on. I dare you.

Fozzie,

I really need to get this off my chest as reading the whole post afterwards suggested to me that you need told a couple of things.

Your answer took no account of the question. That alone suggests a complete lack of intelligence. (your problem, however, not mine) Your answer attempted to disagree with the entire concept and then, later on, agreed with the fact that we are all entitled to our own interpretation of how closely the law should be followed.

This leaves me with the impression that you are a complete and utter f***wit.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong. (but make sure you don't tell me I'm right immediately afterwards, ok?)

You fool.

GH

PS - opportunity is hereby given to answer the original question . . . . .

pizdyetz77,

Please be courteous to others. :)

As a communications engineer I could bore everyone with the actual law and EU Directives on this but I won't. Suffice to say; what if you were using an unlicensed transmitter such as this near a medical device (such as the pacemaker in your old Grans heart) and it interfered with it?

Result? Dead Grannie...

And this isn't rumour, fiction or fantasy; the medical fraternity wouldn't have to spend £millions per year on this if they didn't have to protect themselves from unlicensed transmissions.

Dude, what's the point in flaming Fozzie? All he said was that something is either illegal or it isn't. So he didn't answer your questions, so what? I doubt it was intended as a personal insult, certainly it was no where near as insulting as your two posts in response. A forum is a place for discussion and not name calling/personal insults.

As for answering your question, sorry, I've no experience of any of the kit you're talking about. For me, the convertor to car adapter solution would do me, but with a CD changer in the car, what's the point?!

This is an apology.

I'll admit to being drunk in charge of a keyboard & an internet connection.

Sorry if I caused offence - at the time I thought I was making a most eloquent point. Reading it the next day proved otherwise. Kind of meant what I said but went way over the top.

Sorry to those who I offended. Jack Daniels also sends his apologies.

Have to go now. 1/2 a humble pie left to scoff.

GH

PS - I'm taking delivery of an Arkon 250 on Monday or Tuesday so I'll try to redeem myself by letting you all know what it's like.

It's great. Works like a dream.

There's not much more to say to be honest. It just works.

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

The police haven't been round yet either.

If anyone gets one and needs a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter, then I can make you one up for £5 including P&P. It'll be with a 90degree attachment into the phone as my own is. Cheapest I found on the net was just under a tenner plus P&P. PM me if interested.

Have a look HERE at my homemade one.
