    Facebook Home pre-release leaks

    PaulOBrien

[Edit: The release version of Facebook Home can now be found in this topic.]

A pre-release version of Facebook Home has leaked ahead of the planned 12th April Play Store release date (also the release date for the HTC First 'Facebook phone').

The build itself (pulled from a pre-release HTC First ROM) seems to be rather buggy and incomplete (I can't get 'Chat Heads' working for example), but it's interesting to have a play with to see what Facebook has in store for us later this week.

In order to use the leak, you need an Android device with a maximum resolution of 1280x768 and the ability to completely uninstall your existing Facebook app. This is important, as the leaked APKs are re-signed and can't just be installed over the top of an existing installation. This will automatically exclude some devices which have Facebook installed in the base ROM. If you're on a Nexus device you're good! Even if you do have Facebook in ROM, provided you are rooted there are workarounds - i'll detail these in the comments. If you have any problems installing post below and i'll help if I can.

The leak itself is 3 APKs - the main 'katana' Facebook app: DOWNLOAD (ROMraid), the now-integrated-with-your-SMS 'orca' Messenger app: DOWNLOAD (ROMraid) (orca) and the 'home' Launcher shell app: DOWNLOAD (ROMraid). Simply install all 3 and you're set - bear in mind you do so at your own risk!

In the settings you can find some interesting options such as whether to hide the notification bar by default or not (if it is hidden, sweeping down from the top of the screen reveals it). Let us know your thoughts! :)

[Edit: It's just been pointed out to me that the original leak was signed with test keys, which could present a security risk. With that in mind i've re-signed the APKs with my own private key for peace of mind and updated the download links.]

Reinstalled it, changed the ro.product.model but it won't let me login, gives me an error "An error occurred. Please try again later". Could this be Facebook's new move in blocking the app?

PS: Tried using both MystUL and Nakata (original) product name, same login error.

I'm getting the same login error - tried on a rooted Xperia T (4.0.4) and a Galaxy Note running 4.1.2 Paranoid Android but both give the same error.

    My working process:

installed the 3 apk's earlier, no build.prop modding and no coverfeed

downloaded build.prop editor, changed ro.product.model to MystUL

    Rebooted phone

    viola!

never reinstalled the apk's, maybe that's the issue?

I lost signal to my phone shortly after altering my build.prop, changing it back had no effect and after multiple reboots I finally reflashed my rom, which successfully returned signal

    fair warning

I did test logging in with the play store katana, log in, then dropped the dev APK on top of the play store version in the hope it'd keep the login data and it still failed for me - so I guess you might have to just wait :-)

So now the question is how do we get chat heads working? Paul said he had it working yesterday. I don't really care that my stream is black, the only feature I want to try are the chat heads :-)

    • Hello. I've been using this smartphone since 2016, I went through the official upgrade to Android 5.1.1 and then to 6.0.1. Long story short I'm now with TWRP 3.2.3-0 and Lineage 14.1 (Android 7.1.2). I found some interesting bugs: one is that if you have low battery, about to self power off, and you switch on the torch, it stays on even after the phones is powered off, and you can't turn it off whatsoever, except plugging in the charger and switch on the phone again I guess, but I didn't try it. The matter is that if you let the torch on to let the battery discharge completely, and the light goes off, when you charge it again and switch on the phone you can't switch on the torch anymore, even tho the system claims is on, it doesn't beam any light from the flash led. The only way to "reset" this status is to open the phone, removing the back cover, unscrew 3 screws that hold a tiny bar and manually disconnect the battery (most rightside connector) and then reconnect it. Not even holding the power button helps. Another bug is that if you turn on the phone, and then, without putting it on stand-by, check with some kind of cpu monitoring app the cpu cores activity, the less powerful cores of the A53 are awake and running. If you put the phone in stand by and then re-awake it up, they are always on sleep or "disconnected" or similar status. Even tho it seems that this doesn't affect performance, so it seems that they doesn't show correct running status but still works. Last but the most important: the phone THROTTLES at room temperature!!! If you try a cpu intensive app, the cores throttles at 800 MHz or less, and if it heats more it goes down even to 200 MHz stuttering everything! I don't know if it gots bad thermal spread design or is it a thermal sensor bug, since in system monitor apps it shows temperature above 49~50 in idle while room temp is 20 to 23 °C and over 67-68 while running full calculations! Can anybody confirm or else suggest me some solutions to these issues? Thanks.
    • It worked well on my liquid a1 (running custom rogers rom). Should work on any acer based 2.2 roms I think. But I cant guarantee 😉 use at own risk.
    • I have experience this fine product by Honor. There are some features which are competing with expense mobile companies as well.I'm looking forward to buy honor 20 pro for some latest updated version of it.
