Gmail update failing to install (with MoDaCo Froyo, r8)

I tried pushing Maps.apk back onto the phone, in /system/app. Now I am in a pickle - the apk file is there, but I cannot run Maps (the system does not think it is installed), and I cannot install Maps from the Marketplace. Sigh!

Gmail update failing to install (with MoDaCo Froyo, r8)

OK, I think I've got Gmail sorted. This is what I did this time: adb shell mount /system adb shell rm /system/app/Gmail.apk adb reboot On rebooting, went to market and installed it - it worked. However, I'm stuck on maps - I tried the same thing: adb shell mount /system adb shell rm /system/app/Maps.apk adb reboot On rebooting, tried to install maps, got "Installation error Unknown reason -8". :-(

Gmail update failing to install (with MoDaCo Froyo, r8)

That didn't work for me. adb shell mount /system adb shell pull /system/app/Gmail.apk C:\Gmail.apk /sbin/sh: pull: not found Instead, I tried adb shell mount /system adb pull /system/app/Gmail.apk adb reboot However, this did not seem to make a difference to my ability to update Gmail from the marketplace. Then I tried using Titanium Backup to uninstall Gmail. Still couldn't update from the marketplace. Then I tried installing the pulled Gmail.apk to the device, using adb install Gmail.apk 1775 KB/s (1621428 bytes in 0.892s) /bin/sh: pm: not found Then I downloaded the Gmail.apk file as suggested in a later comment to this thread, and pushed it to /system/app. Again, this made no difference. I haven't even started trying to get Maps to update. Could you please repeat the instructions slowly and carefully, for the hard of understanding?

    Fix a scratched screen

I bought a nice flip-top case for my HTC Desire. But I find the magnetic catch has been scratching the screen (despite a layer of padding I thought adequate). So I now have a blurry, scratched area about 5 mm across. Has anyone any experience of removing scratches from glass screens? I wonder if there is some kind of polish that will do the trick.
  6. Why are Modaco ROMS not listed in ROM Manager (as supplied with the Modaco ROM)?
  7. My phone told me today a system update was available, and I downloaded it. Should I install it? I currently have a custom Modaco ROM (Froyo) installed.
  8. I'm fed up with my T-Mobile Pulse - it is just too slow and flaky. Lots of force close or wait messages, some complete hangs. I'm running the Modaco Android 2.1 ROM on it. If I go back to stock 1.6 it is a little less flaky, but I can only install about 1/10th of the apps I would like before it runs out of space. df -h says: Filesystem size M/used M/available M tmpfs (/dev) 52.7/12.0K/52.7M tmpfs (sqlite) 4.0/0/4.0 system 100.0/97.5/2.5 /data 90.3/77.8/12.4 /cache 20.0/5.0/15.0 /system/sd 457.4/47.1/385.9 /sdcard 6.9G/4.3G/2.75G Available space on the phone, according to Settings, is 12.44MB. But I still have to uninstall some apps in order to install others. So I bit the bullet, and ordered an HTC Desire. I'm expecting a rock solid, fast experience. The question now is, do I install the Modaco 2.2 ROM with APPS2SD+? Is it slightly flaky, like the Pulse, or rock solid? And do I need APPS2SD if I'm installing 2.2 (I thought 2.2 could install stuff on the sdcard by itself)?

    Google maps won't install

There is a Google maps update on the market but it won't install on my Modaco froyo phone. Something about not being signed correctly. Is this normal, and what should I do?

Is Modaco as flaky on Desire as on Pulse?

Thanks, Eddy - I am saving Apps2SD for when I run out of space (having had slightly dodgy experiences with it on the Pulse). I used Titanuim to move a couple of the larger apps to the sd (CoPilot was the biggest). I found moving Flash to SD seemed to make it work slowly, so moved it back. Titanium doesn't offer the option to move QuickOffice (which is quite big, but very useful).

Yes - is there another way?

Is Modaco as flaky on Desire as on Pulse?

Well, I got it sorted in another thread. I'm very happy with my desire. I find not many of my apps will go to sdcard though. But I still have most installed and haven't run out of memory yet. I can't find some apps in the market though - eg Location Power Saving plugin.

    Pleeeease help - phone bricked!

When I turn my Desire on, it comes up with the black screen, with the circular red logo on it, and just stops. Is there any way to get back from here? I bought the phone second hand, and tried to root it, and this happened.

    Cannot install recovery image

Just a final note to say I have unbricked the phone, installed the correct recovery image, rooted it, and installed the latest Modaco ROM. :P Entirely thanks to the extreme helpfulness of EddyOS - respect! Nikki

    Cannot install recovery image

I want to update my new (to me - bought used) HTC Desire to Android 2.2. I thought the best way to do that would be to install a Modaco 2.2 ROM. However, according to the instructions in this topic, I first need to install a recovery image. However, the link to the topic which is supposed to tell me how to do that is broken - it always takes me to the android.modaco.com home page. Help!

    Cannot install recovery image

OK, I have just run unrEVOked again. It ran to completion. It says "Done!" On the phone, I have ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7 It has a menu - I used the vol up and down key to move the highlight to "backup and restore" I pressed power to select - the screen went blank. I waited 1 minute - still blank. I pressed power again - the screen came back, on the main menu. I also tried the other buttons - Home and Menu work exactly the same as Power. What do I do now?

    Cannot install recovery image

Thanks. The good news is the phone is now back to the ROM you suggested (I assume that's what you mean by stock), and boots. Hooray!!!! It's all down to your help. I see that some of the images at shipped-roms are Froyo - but you are saying that I can't install any of these?

    Cannot install recovery image

Thanks once again for your help and advice. I am currently in the process of updating the ROM image. Is it possible to update the phone with one of the Froyo images on the site? If so, how can I find out which one is suitable for my UK phone? I quite like the little I have seen so far of HTC Sense, but don't care about T-Mobile branding. My main desire is to be able to install all 40-odd of my regular applications (including the massive Co-Pilot SatNav). I don't think I actually need rooting, per se.

    Cannot install recovery image

BTW, with the phone in FASTBOOT or HBOOT, plugging it in and running "adb devices" results in an empty device list.

    Cannot install recovery image

OK, I started the phone in fastboot, hooked it up to my Windows 7 (64-bit) machine (bing-bong), and started win-down.bat. It said: Waiting for device. Ensure ESB debugging is enabled. * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * Then nothing. I used the menus on the phone to switch between fastboot and bootloader. (bong-bing...bing-bong each time). Still nothing. I note the instructions in the downgrade topic say: 0. Install HTC Sync (driver required). I don't have this. I have installed the windows 7 drivers for adb, then installed the hboot driver that came with unrevoked. 1. Extract the downloaded zip file fully (do not just click on the zip file). Did that. 2. Enable USB debugging on your phone. Ensure 'ask me' is set under 'Connect to PC' setting with 'charge only'. Plug in your phone. Can't do that - the phone won't boot.

    Cannot install recovery image

Thanks for your help - sorry to be so stressed out! I have some questions: Where do I get the RUU for the phone? I did not get any cd or other media with the phone. Do I need to install the RUU before I can run the downgrade utility? The downgrade says I have to have a gold card (the phone used to say T-Mobile as it booted up, so I guess it is branded). I followed the instructions, but when it had finished, the phone no longer recognised the card (it would still boot at that point). So I used the phone to format the card again. Will it still be a goldcard? After I used revoke to flash the recovery image, I was able to navigate to the recovery menu, and move around it, but pressing Power just blanked the screen. Pressing power again turned it on (still on the recovery main menu). Is this relevant?

Is Modaco as flaky on Desire as on Pulse?

Please can you help me in my other thread - I appear to have bricked my new Desire!
