  1. There are various technical methods to try and detect that you are tethering including TTL (Time to live) of packets.

Hmm I would love to come back to EE - I've used a couple of 2GB chuck away data sims and the speed is impressive - but these prices still cannot compete with the likes of giffgaff (about to get 4G) Tesco etc.

Worth looking at Mobi Data if you want just a small amount of data only - not tried them myself but prices look OK (especially if you get their double allowance offer)

  2. Thanks Paul and tri_zet for your help. I've managed to make a scatter file and dump the entire ROM for safe keeping, and added gapps.

Yes the addresses are straight absolute addresses in the emmc not relative to the partitions. When I have a few mins I'll post the file and a few links/instructions for anyone interested.

neveceral - so yes I have a dump of the rom and will post links instructions for you to make a dump - or ask me if you need any partitions already! I guess at some point someone may get hold of the official factory ROM.

I notice a dev with quite a bit of experience in MediaTek phones has got one and produced a CWM recovery, and is likely to post a ROM shortly - over on XDA and I'm sure a quick Google will get you there!

  3. Found a bit more if anyone is interested.

    The Mediatek engineers mode can be entered by typing this in the dialler * # * # 3646633 # * # *

WARNING! Enter this menu at your own risk. I do not recommend changing anything in the menus.

Under the "Memory" section you can see the partition list that seems to contain the info that might be useful in creating a scatter file, mine is as follows:

Hopefully this is a good step towards the scatter file - will look into it more when I have time.

  4. Hmm - seems that the G500 /proc/mtd is not used but /proc/emmc is used instead. It doesn't seem to list the same areas of storage as the /proc/mtd and is similar to the Lenovo A750. On another forum someone mentions this and I think they just waited for an official/leaked update to get a scatter file.

As it looks like this option might be out - is there another good way of getting a conmplete image/backup of everything?? Maybe using dd in an adb shell?

  5. I would probably give a full backup a try before doing anything - using Paul's scatter file in his downloads section I'll probably try this when I get time:

    http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/creating-rom-dump-of-your-mt65x3-device.html

You should be able to make a backup of everything - boot.img recovery.img etc and be able to flash everything back.

I have another Mediatek device I'm playing with and if anyone has any tips on creating a scatter file for mediatek devices any advice is welcome!

  6. Hmm,

So I've got an adb shell to my G500 and was thinking of following this guide to create a scatter file http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/creating-rom-dump-of-your-mt65x3-device.html?m=1

However when I do a cat /proc/mnt I do not get any mount points at all! I get the first line:

    cat /proc/mtd

    dev: size erasesize name

    [email protected]:/ $

Has anyone got any ideas where the mount points may be on my device?

  7. Hi, Thanks for the reply.

I tried the Bin4ry v2 and v8 versions and they installed the Superuser app.

I've just noticed and tried Bin4ry's v10 version and that has updated su versions and SuperSU and I now have root!

Yeah! - so now I'm off to look at a complete backup then to install the Google services and Apps (especially sync (contacts calendar) gmail and play store.

Again any tips welcome - feeling my way slowly!

The handset is very similar I think to the Acer Gallant Duo/Solo as it uses the dual core Mediatek chip. I'd imagine the Mediatek flashing tool will work just fine - but obviously we need a scatter file for the G500. Anyone have any tips on how to create one - can it be done by reading the device with the flashing tool? Can I backup the entire device with the flashing tool?

The drivers with the mediatek flashing tools for the Acer Gallant seem to work just fine with the G500.

I might do a mini review as well if anyone is interested - would be better if I got the google stuff on first. I'm not so sure there will be that much interest and warrant it's own forum so I'll just update this thread for the moment.

  8. Hi,

I've got hold of a Huawei Ascend G500 Pro otherwise known as the U8836D.

I'm kind of a dual sim fan and have tried the HTC Desire V /T328W which would be great if it wasn't so slow!

I kind of liked the idea as it is a dual core, front camera and larger battery than the Acer Liquid Gallant Duo, although it lacks the compass.

Of course it was released in China - but has a almost stock version of ICS 4.04 with English as standard, but no Google framework/apps/play store although it is on the Google play list of devices.

I have tried the Bin4ry root method - which appears to work - but when I run root explorer it says it does not have superuser rights!

Has anyone else got one or any tips/ideas for getting root? I would like to try putting the Google framework stuff on to it

I know a certain supplier in China will eventually develop a ROM and root etc but I would like to add the google stuff to the pretty much stock rom.

Although I've used android for a while and used to IT I'm pretty new to modding so treat me gently!!

  10. lovely stuff... ALL phone manufacturers should look at this implementation of dual sim and add it to their handsets in the future.

Whilst I like the ability to choose default for data etc - I much prefer the dialler and messaging on the HTC Desire V dual sim. You get two call buttons on the dial screen and two send buttons on the text screen - you just press the one you want without a popup menu and having to press again. Would be great if someone could hack this into a rom.

I think the Huawei G500 pro (dual sim and similar specs but dual core CPU, front camera and 1930mAh battery) which looks like a similar implementation of ICS and dual sim has two call buttons.

I've got one on the way and will have to see which I keep - although there is no root and google framework on it yet. 'tis a bit more money as well @ ~ £175

  11. What's peoples opinions about GPS performance? The only review I could find online suggested that there may be issues with reception. Well AFAICT it suggests that, the translation isn't too good. But if GPS is OK I am very tempted.

The GPS is fine on mine - took about a minute or 2 the very first time I tried and that was just out a window. Using the GPS again a little while later got a fix in seconds.

  12. I think only the 360buy.com branded version of the G500 pro has been cancelled - it will still be available as a straight Huawei branded device.

I'll let you know next week as mine should arrive by then from China - just got to wait for root as it won't have the Google framework.

I would be surprised if it is widely available in Europe or outside China as it is dual sim - I know some make it officially to EU like Ace Gallant Duo but few do.

  13. Thanks for the reply. I don't want to use data on both sims at the same time but my concern is that "3" will block my voice and text sim as it is permanently on the Orange 2G network.

My second "3" sim is data only so I get charged if I use it for text or voice.

I have a small amount of data on my voice and text sim which is why I want to use the data only one for data. (I have 5GB for £8 per month on it. Its very old !)

    PS No slap needed. :D

PPS I would be interested in rooting too.

Ah yes - it's been a while since I had a 3 SIM and I forgot they don't like 2G use only. I wonder if they do it based on network records of which cells you log on to - or the IMEI of your handset. That's a nice data plan 5GB for £8! You don't want to loose that one!

  14. As I said before I am trying to use two '3' Sims. I cannot get both to use 3G. One of them always reverts to 2G on the Orange network and shows the roaming symbol even with roaming disabled.

    Am I missing something ?

Sorry if my answer sounds like an answer by the "IT crowd" give me a slap if it does!

I'm assuming that you are not trying to get both SIMs on 3G at the same time as nearly all 3G dual SIM handsets I've seen only do 2G on the second SIM - the ALGD included.

Isn't the roaming setting only for data? On an android phone you usually get the roaming symbol when using just voice.

Technically a 3 SIM does roam when it uses the everything everywhere network. My old Orange sim used to say roaming when using a T-Mobile mast until they merged the networks earlier this year.

My ALGD is winging it's way to me now (from Expansys UK but shipped from France) so I'll be able to have a play next week when it arrives.

I'm using a HTC Desire V dual SIM at the moment (actually a T328w from China - but running the HTC Asia WWE ROM) and I'm like Jekyl and Hyde with it - great size - very thin - usual HTC sense stuff that I like - but very very slow and the bluetooth doesn't work properly with my BMW handsfree! Grrr!

Hope there will be some good community support - I'm fine with stock if it is good - but might like to add some of the HTC features - their dual sim dialler and messaging app is nice as it gives you a send/call button for each SIM instead of a popup menu asking which SIM to use - I have the APK but think it might need more of the HTC system framework to work - and might need root on the ALGD.
