Using VoIP from abroad?

Im off to Spain in a couple of weeks and expect that the high call charges of using a UK mobile will prohibit me making many calls home using my TyTnII. I’ve never bothered with VoIP before but thought if I can find a free wifi-hotspot (or the Hotel provides it?) then maybe I can call home ‘for free’. Is this possible, and if so can anyone recommend the best option for this device?

Thanks

Hello

Yes VOIP with the TytnII is possible. you will have to download a few packages to activate it, then it works from the usual dial-pad.

you need to install ms tool WM6VOIP.CAB (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299950 )

and Shaun33 WM6 SIP Config Tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=303493 )

next step is to find a free wifi hotspot....

I had trouble when in the U.S. recently.

I used the Kaiser Tweak option to disable data ("Data" -> "Enabled: T-Mobile Internet" set to Disabled), and I wasn't able to connect via Wi-Fi, which was a real pain. I didn't want to experiment with my settings and risk running up a huge data bill, so I went 3 weeks without data on my Kaiser :D

Just to add insult to my pain, I still managed to rack up some data usage, even though I disabled the data while still in the UK and didn't re-enable it till I got back.

Any ideas what was wrong/ recommendations of the best/ safest Wi-Fi only setting for roaming?

Hello

Any idea about what was wrong, but some to avoid GPRS / 3G connection :

In start / settings / connections tab / connections icon / advanced tab / select networks , I've created a false network profile, pointing to anything (no modem selected).

When I don't want to have GPRS connection, i select this network as primary. this doesn't affect Wifi usage at all.
