14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support

Hi,

I had a bootloader 0.75 and a ROM 1.21 (updated OTA) on an Orange debranded device (the wifi was not working since the update).

I successfully rooted (r6) with the first link (bootloader 0.75 + ROM 1.15) and I kept my 0.75 bootloader.

Then it was pretty easy to install the MCR 3.1 using fake-flash.

Of course, the wifi is working now.

Thank you Paul and all the other contributors.

Can I still install the OTA update without problems?

I don't think so.

How can I get a rooted 1.21 (or above) device? my hboot is 0.80

- download or bake a MCR 3.1 ROM from here or download another rooted ROM from anywhere.

- copy the ROM to your SD card,

- install "ROM Manager" from the Market (i.e fake-flash, see here)

- backup your ROM using ROM Manager

- install the new ROM using ROM Manager

That's it !

hello to all

1) if I make the rooting process and will flash a RUU ROM on desire with boot loader 0.80, after that I can NOT flash a different ROM with boot loader smaller that 0.80?

2) It's possible not to update/modifies/change the boot loader even after flashing a RUU ROMs ?

3) after rooting and flashing with a new roms will be unlocked ? (network independent)?

4) anyone know the micro sd card reader (internal) performance? how fast can read /write? and if is a difference in performance using a higher class micro sd card ?

keep the android free :)

Hi all,

i already used the old way when the Desire came out and everything was working fine.

But now i had to buy a new one and i dont get it running.

Desire: German T-Mobile Brand

HBOOT: 0.75

Software: 1.15.110.11

when i execute the "step1-Windows.bat" i get thw following output:

Erasing cache and rebooting in RUU mode...

erasing 'cache'... OKAY

... OKAY

About to start flash...

< waiting for device >

sending 'zip' (137446 KB)... OKAY

writing 'zip'... INFOadopting the signature contained in this image...

writing 'zip'... INFOadopting the signature contained in this image...

INFOsignature checking...

INFOzip header checking...

INFOzip info parsing...

INFOchecking model ID...

FAILED (remote: 42 custom id check fail)

From my Point of view that is a problem of the gold card i just "produced"

But i dont know what i did wrong. I followed the instruction from here:

http://android.modaco.com/content/general-...ing-a-goldcard/

I am using the 4GB microSD card which is coming with the Desire

I tried to make the gold card with Windows7 and WindowsXP

I tried it with the Hex editor (was working on my old Desire fine) and with Physwriter, to write the gold card to the microSD card

I did not change the CID or the reverse from the CID in any way.

But i remember that when i did i last time i had to delete the zeros in front of the number. But i think this was an other page.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Hi all,

the reversing page is not working correct.

i did it by hand and now it is working.

CID: 0353445355303447806064910f00a4e8

Page output: 00a4000f916460804734305553445303

working: e8a4000f916460804734305553445303

you see that the begining of the page output is different from what it should be

I have only got this after running step1-windows.bat:

Step 1 complete - now use the bootloader menu to enter recovery mode.

To do this, press the power button, wait a few seconds, then use the volume keys and power button to select the RECOVERY option.

=============

1. What is wrong?

2. how can I fix this ?

3. how can I be sure that my gold card is ok ?

I did the step 1 again and again on windows until one time it did not give me that error.

then in the recovery menu which is blue in my device not the green everywhere is said,

i wiped and then updated the r6 update.zip from the sd card.

but in all these time there was one error line at the bottom of the recovery screen in devce which said : "E:can't open /cache /recovery/command"

4. what is this error ? is my recovery successful ? why do I get a blue recovery screen instead of the green ?

5. will I need my gold card again after successful rooting ?

6. can I leave it like that or should I format it ?

Well after several attempts at the R6 method I am still getting "remote: 43 main version check fail" each time. I tried downloading the r6-root-update file from the mirror instead, still no luck.

I have AU Telstra Desire 1.16.841.1 build and 0.75.0000 bootloader

Once it seemed to give up on the 43 main error twice, things progressed to the point that i could entere BOOTLOADER and then choose RECOVERY option, black screen appeared with a red triangle, so I pressed and held 'Volume Up' then tapped 'Power'. Desire went to 'recovery' screen, I selected the 'wipe data/factory reset' option, then selected the option to 'Apply sdcard:update.zip'. and that's when I got a couple of errors and the process stopped:

E:failed to verify whole-file signature

E:signature verification failed

Installation aborted.

Any ideas? Does the fact that things moved on so much after the 43 main version error mean the error resolved itself? How do i solve this E: error?

I've been googling around trying to find solutions but they all appear to be regarding older root methods, which I'm not willing to try when there is this r6 method called 'riskfreeroot'! lol

Cheers in anticipation of any help you guys can offer

-Gene

My phone is already rooted with the previous ROM (r5), and now I'm trying to install r6 but I can't get past the black screen with the red triangle... when I hold the volume+ button, nothing happens. Any ideas?

Are there any changes made in R6 that make the Rom worth updating to anyway? I thought the MCR roms where a bit better

I prefer using a rooted stock ROM with just Hebrew support added.. I don't really need the features in MCR.

Great Work Paul.

I was struggling with the Linux version first.

But i then switched to the Windows version (doing it on a Win7 64 Bit version) and that did the trick.

Even being seasoned in WinMo flashing, I was looking up to rooting my first Android device.

But the steps are straight forward and the effect is great (all I needed was to be able to take screenshots from device).

I'll be signing up for your Kitchen the coming days. Get me a nice slim Rom without HTC stuff, as I'm getting fond of LauncherPro and Fancy Widget, Mort Player etcetcetc.

Again Great work and many thanks.

@ ahwaztaxi

this helps me...

Hello.

I had the following issue:

FAILED (remote: 90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediately)

sending 'zip' (137446 KB)... FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))

With Windows 7 64bit

But I've found a solution!!

Everybody with the same error try the following:

Open the step1-windows.bat with a texteditor (notepad doesn't display the lineending correctly. Try wordpad)

Now you see everything the Batch file is doing.

Instead of typing "step1-windows.bat" copy and paste every line you can see in there ( you don't have to copy the echo lines):

fastboot-windows.exe erase cache

fastboot-windows.exe oem rebootRUU

fastboot-windows.exe flash zip testimage.zip

NOW...when this error appears again WAIT until the HTC logo appears again and windows has successful recognized the device again!

Now type:

fastboot-windows.exe flash zip testimage.zip

now it shoud work.

The last step:

fastboot-windows.exe reboot-bootloader

to return to the bootloader!

As an alternative you can add "sleep 10" to the batch file under the first "fastboot-windows.exe flash zip testimage.zip" line!

Hope it helps.

Greating

Spirit

well I feel a little silly and sheepish now... I just realised that given my build number was 1.16.x I should have been using the second/alternative/80 file rather than the first one listed...

and would you believe it?! When I used the right file, IT WORKED!! :)

With the rooting process behind me, I'll now push on to installing ROM, upgrading radio, etc.

Cheers heaps Paul

PS> I used windows 7 64bit and have a telstra AU desire.

this helps me...

thank you very very much

i DID that and I didn't have the FAILED (remote: 90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediately) error.

BUT after that i went to the recovery mode and it was blue instead of green and I still have "E:can't open /cache /recovery/command" error.

by the way I wiped and applied the update.zip from sd card but still no good and I have the same old rom with VIRGIN logo in the boot sequence.

this device is giving me the worst headache of my life !!!

now what can I do ?

I have a super user in my programs.

does that mean it's rooted ?

now how can I flash a rom like r3.1 with a2sd ?

Use the fake flash clockwork mod image that Paul has provided. I get that E: error as well, if you keep trying it though it should eventually load recovery.

Guest Time Sheep

Hi there ;)

I'm sorry I didn't care to read all 114 pages, but I get an error when running step1-windows.bat.

Desire Root Step 1

Erasing cache and rebooting in RUU mode...

erasing 'cache'... FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))

... FAILED (status read failed (Unknown error))

About to start flash...

< waiting for device >

sending 'zip' (138708 KB)... FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))

sending 'zip' (138708 KB)...

Here it hangs. Stuck at a shiny and pretty HTC logo, but I'm not sure that's why I tried to root?

Just to say that I was able to root my never-branded 1.15.405 / 0.75 Desire today on Mac OS X. A few hairy moments, I had to run the step1 twice and got stuck on an RUU screen for a second, but eventually got there!

Now just to reinstall my apps!

OK, so I (successfully) completed the first part (running step-1-windows.bat) of the process, but when I enter the Recovery Menu it says "E:can't open cache/recovery/command". I've tried rebooting several times, but still get the same message. Should I ignore this and still 'wide data/factory reset' and update, or what?

EDIT: I used the 'r5-desire-root-alt' method (or rather a combo of the two) to complete the rooting process, and it's all better now ;)

Now what the hell is Superuser Permissions, and is it supposed to be just a black screen when you open it?
