Aspect Ratio

I am impressed with the screen quality of the Hudl, but didn't notice until I tried to play a video that, despite what most of the early reviews said, the screen is not 16:9, more like 14:9. As I bought it primarily for watching films on the many train jouneys I do, its quite annoying that I'm getting a smaller image size than I would have with a full 16:9 screen. It seems to be arranged that 16:9 area sits within the navigation and notification bars. Is this the same in other 7" tablets? I've been looking at pics of the Nexus 7 and Asus MemoPad 7, but can't quite work it out. It seems strange that Tesco chose not to optiimise the screen area for 16:9 video as that seems to be one of the main uses they are touting, with Blinkbox etc.

It's 1440x900, which is obviously a 16:10 aspect ratio, not 16:9.

The box clearly states that resolution, but elsewhere states '7" 16:9 pocket-sized touch...'.

False advertisement? Hmmmmm.

Someone who does not know 1440x900 is 16:10 could be mislead.

EDIT:  corrected my aspect ratio numbers, I guess I got 14 and 9 stuck in my head for some reason while distracted.

I took that to mean it's a 16:10 ratio touch screen with the navigation bar taking up a tenth, leaving a usable 16:9.

Yeah it is 16:10 with 16:9 usable, roughly.  I think that was the idea.

But it's questionable if it displays 16:9 properly.  I think it's a little off.

Anyway...I can't say I really care.

It's a very, very impressive bit of gear and for the money i'm willing to forget the piddly little things.

My post above, I got fixated on the numbers 14 and 9, that's what I get posting at work.

Is this usual in 7" tablets, or do some of them have the total sceen area in 16:9? The nav and notification bars disappear when a film is playing to leave black bars at the top & bottom of the screen, so it shouldn't be necessary to make it 16:10.
