Hi everyone I've been watching this forum closely in anticipation of the Éclair update for our GT540s. How are you all coping with the waiting?

I'm coping fine with it. I'd like to see more in the Market, and only a 2.1 update will cause that to happen, but apart from that, I really don't put it high on my list of priorities.

Badly

I wrote a small script that wgets the CSMG and checks for a European GT540-update and emails me if it's there. In crontab. Every 5 minutes. Could possible be classified as insane by most people.

This is what they write to me on mail

Thank you for your email regarding your LG handset. Unfortunately, the Android version update to 2.1 (Eclaire) is not yet currently available in the UK.

When this date has been decided, please be assured that we will advertise this.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Best regards,

LG Electronics UK Helpdesk

I think we established a while ago now that the emails are a stock email, worded differently, all giving the same message.

Well not really. The email I received stated an update would be released within a matter of days. Granted a lot of the emails look similar but to me it looks like a department that isn't fully in touch with the people handling the update. Seems LG support are like any other company, some more in the know than others. I'm personally holding out for an early to midweek release from Monday. But we'll see, I'm only in it for HTML 5.

Your updater is totaly different to mine?

Mine is much more basic and just says my phone is already up to date.

+1

What updater is that you're using, markoni80?

Mine looks like this:

I just called LG UK customer services on +441753491300 to ask the question. The agent read out the latest update she had, that on this coming Monday 20th September the date of release of the 2.1 update will be announced, expected to be middle of next week (Monday 20th - Friday 24th) but "probably" Wednesday 22nd.

OK. It is Monday. Where is my god damn 2.1

lol !

If it does come out this week I think I'm gonna wait & see if there's any major probs before updating ... and also if someone posts a complete changelog on the update :)

Yeah this is starting to get ridiculous, I'm tempted to just ditch the GT540 and get something that runs a recent version!

That's all well and good, wanting a phone that comes with a more recent version, but it would seem a lot of the UK based Android phones are 1.6 (case in point the Xperia X10, which a lot of people I know won't shut up about), with a lot of companies planning 2.1 roll outs around now.

I still think personally this phone is excellent value for money and having to wait for an update doesn't bother me hugely. It'll be tasty when it comes and I'm certainly looking forward to it, but when it does come I'd rather it didn't include smut or foreign apps (Source: INQ), and it was properly tested. LG know we want it, and I think they want this upgrade over with, but if they want to take time to make it right more power to them. Too much software is just rushed out these days.

My primary phone is an iPhone (which I love to pieces), I had to find myself an affordable second smart phone for work so I chose the GT540, it's not bad I suppose - I just feel a bit left out of the update train!

I know what you mean about the apps though, so much rubbish in the Android app store. I'm not a fan of censorship but at least the iPhone app store is clean and organised. The Android market is full of 'big breast wallpaper 82', 'hot girlz screensaver' and a whole host of foreign apps I don't understand!

I was actually referring to updates issued by phone companies that have included smutty / foreign apps. God only knows what my late grandmother would have made of some German porn app turning up on her newly updated phone, sounds like a legal quagmire and a half. As for the Android Market, I tend to search for apps by name, I gave up on trawling through the "top free apps". I don't even know why I'm using the abbreviated "app", I'm a software developer, I develop applications. Lousy smartphones, rewriting my vocabulary... Ahem.

I think if you needed something affordable for work, you didn't do too badly with the GT540. I'm on a somewhat limited student type budget, and therefore I'm unwilling to tie myself to a contract. This of course leaves me somewhat limited when it comes to phone choices, it's either an overpriced feature phone (yes cheap options exist but I wanted an upgrade from a K800i and to be honest as far as feature phones go it's one of the best I've had), or a low end smartphone. Frankly though, I've only been impressed by the GT540. Yes the camera is a pile of rubbish, but you can see that from the box (3MP / no flash), but for £110 I don't think I did too badly, it certainly seems nicer than my girlfriend's X10 Mini Pro (although I do get the odd bout of keyboard envy).

Anyway back on topic... Woooooo HTML 5 support! Etc...
