[Rumours/Gossip] Android 3.0 Gingerbread details emerge

Android 3.0 'Gingerbread' details have popped up today.

You may well remember back in January when the Nexus was released and again at the Google IO conference, the next version of the Android operating system 3.0 'Gingerbread' was mentioned? Well, some more details have emerged today.

These are simply the musings of Mobile-review.com’s Eldar Murtazin, there is no way to confirm anything, so take these with a pinch of salt, although they do make sense.

30-Jun-2010_Android-Gingerbread.jpg

  • Expected dates are mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping around in November/December.
  • Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (Currently 1Ghz is the maximum speed chipset! Backs up rumours of faster and possibly dual core chips later this year)
  • New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Tablet anyone?.....)
  • Completely revamped user interface.
  • Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2

All very exciting indeed, I'm sure this is the first of many rumours over the summer.

Thanks to Unwired view for the headsup!

2.2 hasn't even made it out completely to one phone officially yet and we're looking at 3.0? Props to Google for working quickly. I just hope this actually happens.

edit: the screen size req sounds stupid though. I hope the Nexus One can get this after all.

Isn't the Samsung Galaxy S and at least one HTC model up to those specs?

I guess we will see some very interesting ipad alternatives coming out. I am looking forward to being able to get a nice Android powered "pad".

( I don't like the apple policy on iphone/ipad, ind I do not like having an OS that does not have full multitasking support, yes I know Apple claim

to have multitasking in v4 of their OS; but that is only semi multitasking, between applications, that is written to use it)

Doesn't the streak have the min requirements for this also?

Seems like Google running again before the rest have caught up.

It would be nice if Android were allowed to settle down and let devs make some killer apps and add ons for the current 2.1 / 2.2.

Having been through the Hero, selling that and getting the Desire and having to mod that to get 2.2 it strikes me that Google had best do what Apple has done and stick around at 2.2 for a while to let Devs make tablet (Pad) apps ready for a tablet launch.

Setting a standard and sticking to it for a while allowed apple to get apps made for the iPad in a hurry, and of course they can use iPhone apps too. I love my iPad for that, the simple pleasure of being able to get it, switch it on and just use it is a massive win.

If Android 3 changes the UI and other elements at launch AND has different hardware it just fragments everything more.

For anyone confused about the Nexus One not meeting the requirements for Gingerbread here is a link to the official spec page. Not only does it meet the min memory and CPU speed requirements, it beats the min screen size requirement by 0.2".

I think 3.0 will address these issues, what with the two tier OS for high and low end devices.

Google have said the updates will slow down in the next year or so, it is still a new platform (Hence all the updates) and they are aware updates do upset people as it makes their phones old news very quickly.

Besides- it's great isn't it! We love gossiping about all this don't we! Iphone 4? old news.......

Ok, Just now tweets have appeared ( well, last night, but I do sleep!) from Dan Morill, who is well connected in the Android open source community, rubbishing the rumours I have quoted.

Boo Hiss is what I say! We will wait and see , the truth will obviously start to creep out over the next few months- and we will keep reporting it!

Have a look at his twitter account http://twitter.com/morrildl - it was about 9 hours ago.
