Advent Android tablets set to hit the Dixons Group stores shortly

Just to hijack this page even more (after the Toshiba Folio) it looks like Creative are also getting in on the Android tablet game:

Ziio 7 and the Ziio 10 (7" & 10" screens, surprising huh!).

Both have Android 2.1 with an update to 2.2 promised.

Quote from What-HiFi:

"The tablets sport HDMI outputs, with the smaller, lower resolution (480 x 800) tablet capable of outputting 720p HD content and the larger (1024 x 768) claiming 1080p output capability.

Both machines have a front-mounted camera, built-in stereo speaker, mini USB connection, 3.5mm headphone jack, plus an accelerometer. There's WiFi as standard but no sign of a 3G model.

The Ziio 7in will cost £200 for the 8GB model, £220 for the 16GB model, while the Ziio 10in will be £250 for the 8GB and £270 for the 16GB. Both have SD card slots for adding more memory."

Shame no 3G, I think I'll just hang on for it before I get one.

I took a trip down to Curry's Wrexham today, saw the Tab and wondered why the hell anyone in their right mind will shell out over £500 notes for that plastic crap, especially when it's next to a ipad!!!!!!!

I will take another trip to it tomorrow (Curry's is 2 doors down from my Gym) to ask my GF's brother in law when the Folio and Vega is due in....

I will be taking advantage of his staff discount :)

You know what, Steven Paul Jobs got it so right in Feb of this year, we all wanted Tablets and now we can see that with the raft of tablets hitting the shelves before Xmas!!!!!

Me I want 10 inch's or more, tried the Streak, to big for a phone. 7inch's to small for sit at home replacement for your lappy or desktop...

10 Inch's plus is the golden egg!

I reckon the next ipad will go bigger, not smaller.

Still in for the Vega but wanna see the Folio before putting my cold hard cash down!

Next piece of info.

I _think_ the surfaceflinger and gl subsystems are being done in software... boggles the mind I know. I'm wondering if the gpu drivers simply weren't finished.

Google Earth causes the Folio to go _mental_ and quadrant (though reporting good scores) the 3d portions are _massive_ stutterfests

I may return this device, the side of the box says Tegra 250, that implies the software is in place to support it.

EDIT: No looks like the 3d is performing as expected according to GLbenchmark.com but something is definitely _up_

That would explain it, I expected the Tegra2 to be much smoother!

In a way this is good, when they sort it out the same hardware will be much better...

I guess that's a thing for Toshiba + nVidia to sort out, not Gingerbread.

One plus point, the battery pack is completely removable.. which is nice as I've had to remove it due to lockups.

EDIT: Whoah. Oh I think something I generally use was _really_ bad for it. not sure on the details yet, but I just uninstalled a load of stuff and suddenly its buttery smooth again.

Additionally I finally got ADB working. I could see "FAILED BINDER TRANSACTION" rows in logcat when it was stuttering, so I'm not sure the folio was to blame.

BTW, superoneclickroot seems to work :)

So do I need to replace anything frameworky to get gapps installed or is it simply apks/libs to /system?

Ok I've pushed GoogleServicesFramework.apk and Vending.apk to system/app I now get the market icon and once executed it takes me to the account signup. however that fails after signup. I think the Folio is mis-reporting its MAC address and thus the check-in is failing

D/NativeCrypto( 1295): Freeing OpenSSL session

V/CheckinRequestBuilder( 1295): pre-froyo android id is 0

I/CheckinTask( 1295): Sending checkin request (32167 bytes)

E/CheckinTask( 1295): Checkin failed: https://android.clients.google.com/checkin (request #0)

E/CheckinTask( 1295): java.io.IOException: Rejected response from server: HTTP/1.1 400 invalid hardware identifier: "00.24.7E.70.B3.6A" is not a valid MAC address (expect 12 hex digits)

E/CheckinTask( 1295): at com.google.android.gsf.checkin.CheckinTask.parseResponse(CheckinTask.java:298)

E/CheckinTask( 1295): at com.google.android.gsf.checkin.CheckinTask.sendRequest(CheckinTask.java:246)

E/CheckinTask( 1295): at com.google.android.gsf.checkin.CheckinTask.doInBackground(CheckinTask.java:146)

I winder what format its expecting, maybe not periods?

Does the Folio use hdpi or mdpi graphics? (if you have adb shell access then 'getprop ro.sf.lcd_density' might be the easiest way to answer that - if it returns 240 it's hdpi, 160=mdpi). Just wondering if the pixels are so far apart on a 10inch screen does it fall under the mdpi category.

Well....

Just ordered a Folio on the PC Word website...

I have to say, the fact that this tab has also a Tegra 2 + 16Gb internal + normal size memory card + Wifi n + Big name (Toshiba) justified the extra money (for me) and made me move to the Dark side :(

My only concern is relative to the lag described by some of the owners but Taskkiller should (as always) help... That reminds me my Streak :)

That is it... I stop polution this Threat and move to ne new one!

Good luck to the future Vega owners and long live Android!

Can't wait anymore. Just ordered the Folio from the Currys website, use save5 promo code to get 5% discount, valid until 8 Nov I think. Got it for £313.49 :)

Just hope Tosh sort the glitches out soonest.

How strange that the Vega threat is in fact pushing people to the Tosh by a mix of frustration and higher spec :)

Some time ago, I read someting about the device identifying himself in the system/build.prop file to allow the Googlemarket to identify what apps are compatible.

Maybe you could try to change that for Nexus one?

Appologies to all vega readers for this off topic... We really need a dedicated threat for the Folio...

Got mine yesterday but not sure if I am going to keep it, the viewing angel is bad but this may be a good thing for privacy, The home and back buttons seem to stop responding and need a good press sometimes, there does not seem to be a calendar app, tried to side load Angry Birds but get sound and just a black screen.

We need to get Android Market on this.

i am finding it very interesting. all the talk of the other tablets is kind of bracing me for the fact the vega "may" not be the uber machine we had hoped for. If tosh can't get it right then maybe a cheaper one won't either?

Black screen sounds luke a flash issue

It doesn't have flash loaded as default does it?

1 - The game is not Flash based

2 - As has already been said you have to download Flash from the Toshiba app store and it's not available yet

Yeah, sideloading the current flash apk causes the browser to crash _hard_ I guess there is some hardware specific optimisation in there

they have their own thread now so we should be back on track :)

I'm interested in the Advent Vega, but I'm a newbie to tablets and Android so please allow me to ask 2 dumb questions!

1. In it's standard format will I be able to retrieve email using my wifi connection (not web mail, but a [email protected] type email that I normally do with Outlook)

2. This thread seems to say the addition of Gingerbread will be a useful potential upgrade - would this normally be free if I bought one when they first become available>

Thanks

Simon
