internal storage problem

Hi there

not sure its this is the correct place to post so sorry if not

well recently(yesterday) i bought myself a HTC Desire from T-Mobile here(czech rep.) everything was great even decided not to mess with root or roms (i had xperia x1 for almost 2 years now so i have general experience with custom roms)

well but now i run into a problem with internal storage after just downloading few apps from market i run out of space(20-30mb left)! and it wasnt even that many apps well so i decided to look around what can i found out

and i found out according to OSMonitor that size of my:

/system is 256 000 K currently used 85.6%

/data is 151 168 K currently used 81.1%

but if i got my info right shouldnt desire have around 500 mb of internal storage? well i figured out that since t-mobile were messing with they simply screwed something somewhere

well but for my lack of experience with android im not sure at all well heres my phone info(dunno what exactly say what):

Firmware: 2.1-update1

baseband: 32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09

Kernel: 2.6.29-3cb3dfbf, htc-kernel@and18-2#1

build: 1.15.110.11 CL155070 release-keys

Software number: 1.15.110.11

Browser: webkit 3.1(tho im sure that doesnt have anything to do with it)

well now im finally getting to the point of this thread :)

as i see it i now i have 3 options:

1) live with it untill im comfortable to fix it

2) app2sd but that requires root right? not sure i wanna be rooting my phone yet

3) since i suspect really crappy rom, get other rom(my first choice would be just official HTC), but i would have to root for this anyway wouldnt i?

well now i have some acuall questing for you:

1)first did i indentify the problem correctly?

2)is there any other fix? preferable that wouldnt break warranty?

3)ad 2) is there anyway to backup current rom from my desire

2)what would you recommend to do?

3) in case i would choose option #3 would you recommend any other rom? if i just want least amount of any additional "hacking" for a while
