8 bit specifics for launcher icons

i'm using gimp and photoshop to edit icons in "launcher2.apk" can anyone point me in the right direction for saving the files with 8 bit depth?

i can save them in 8 bit using photoshop, however the apk will not install. i used "save for web" and set it to png-8.

any ideas?
