Free Unlocking

Two things.

Anyone who has a blade and is still sitting on the fence thinking about buying a G300. Just do it, this phone is a game changer.

And second I followed other members advice and went in store with a Voda sim card number and got the phone for £100.

Then made the mistake of scanning the IMEI bar code and ordering a unlock as I walked out of the shop only to discover it was unlocked already!

Told the unlocker on ebay to buy himself a beer!

For reference I had been in the store a few days ago but they refused to unlock for free so I walked. The box they had out then had in black pen PAYG by the IMEI label.

Today the box has no writing on but came from the same locker.

I ordered mine from the Vodafone website and had it delivered to my house. There is no indication on the box that it is PAYG and the phone was locked.

Oh, and I completely agree with this statement.

If you are wondering if the G300 will be a decent upgrade from the Blade then YES. I was perfectly happy with my Blade, albeit with a few little niggles, but I though it was a great phone for the price. However, getting the G300 I just realise how much things have moved on at this price point. The things I use my phone for has now changed significantly. I use my phone all the time now for Facebook, eBay, sat nav and general web browsing (and for posting on these forums using Tapatalk) because the battery life is just so much better, the WiFi is so much more reliable, and the screen is that much bigger. Anyone who thinks that the screen is only half inch bigger so it won't make much difference, think again. I couldn't beleive how much more usable it is compared to the Blade.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. while the Blade is a good phone, i think once people have a go on this they'll really see the difference. i certainly do.

I think once CM,ICS and when the Vodafone rights have ended people might well get 1.

Also think some people think the phone is locked on Vodafone & dont realise it can be unlocked & all that.

can someone describe the process steps for unlocking ?

Put in a different SIM card (i.e. non Vodafone) and power it on. It it asks for network unlock code, then it's locked.

Go to ebay and buy unlock code. It will be sent to you. Enter the code ad it will be unlocked. That's all. :)

1). Get phone from whichever source and check it is not already unlocked.

2). Either get the Vodafone store to unlock the phone for you or get your unlock code by supplying the IMEI number of your phone to an eBay unlocker.

3). If Vodafone do the unlock then there is nothing else to do. If going the eBay route then wait for the seller to send you the unlock code (normally within 24 hours).

4). Put a non vodafone sim in the phone and turn it on. Then when the phone is booted up it should ask for an unlock code to enable that sim to work.

5). Enter the supplied unlock code.

That's it, job done.

Woops, sorry. Didn't see the previous answer 'cause I didn't refresh my web browser.

ALREADY UNLOCKED FROM VODAFONE

Mine arrived yesterday and I did the £5 offer on ebay for an unlock, code arrived this morning, so put in a giffgaff and also tried orange sim, but both of them worked.

Phone arrived from Vodafone UNLOCKED ALREADY.

Thought... oops, did I sign up for a monthly plan, but I opted for the pay as you go simply cost £0. Interestingly no SIM in the box!

Bugger, waste of a fiver. So check if your phone is unlocked first.

I went into my local Vodafone store on Sunday, and told the bloke at the counter that I wanted to unlock my G300, and that I'd read on the internet that it can be done for free for my model.

He took down my IMEI number, inputted it into his computer, printed a page off and said "here you go... the instructions are on the sheet". Who knows if he was supposed to charge me £20, but he didn't!

Maybe it's because I said I know that people have had it done for free, or maybe it's just a policy of him and/or the branch. It's definitely worth mentioning that you know people have done it for free though, and see if you can get it free too.

I tried that... 2 x Vodafone shops won't do it for free.

You probably got a return that had previously been unlocked..Vodaphone are fond of repackaging returns and passing them off to unsuspecting customers!

It seems unlikely though - the phone hasn't been out for very long at all and quite a few people have found their phones unlocked out of the box (myself included!)

Got mine from Vodaphone Guildford yesterday. Connected to GiffGaff immediately, didn't have to unlock. phone was new and sealed. Didn't have to pay top up, but no Quidco, so exactly £100. Excellent looking phone btw!

edit: btw shop didn't know it was unlocked, said i'd have to go back next week. so they didn't know either, odd.

Just a note my local Vodafone store (Ealing Broadway) seems very strict about NOT doing Free unlocks any more.

when the phone was new and had sound problems the staff offered free unlocks. Now they quote £30 or say it cannot be unlocked.

I ordered via the Vodafone web site to get topcashback / quidco instead.

Ordered 3 all locked to Vodafone.. Off to ebay ...

That seems to be a bit unfair. Why do you class them as dodgy. I've used one seller twice and had no problems at all & I can't remember seeing any posts on here about people having bad experiences.

Also, I think you'll be waiting a long time for a free unlock generator..

I told the guys in two shops (the two on Oxford St, London) I had a Vodafone Ireland sim and would like to use my phone when back home with that sim. Playing up the fact I was a loyal customer with them for 5 years in Ireland.

The first shop were a flat out "No". They quoted £19.99 as others have mentioned.

The guys in the second shop didn't blink an eye. They just said "No problem" and put a request in their till to send me an unlock code by email.

Ok, the process actually took 8 days in the end, due to the "customer service" centre trying to tell me it was £19.99 as well! I just told them that the shop told me no charge (which they did, I made sure to ask if it was free). Code came by email. All done.

Thanks to this thread I just picked up one of these phones for £100, unlocked, no questions asked. The staff member who helped me was very helpful and we tried my Orange sim in store. He initially stated there was a £20 unlocking fee, but instantly gave up after I raised what's been mentioned here; trying other stores, contract vs. PAYG phones, and so on. The store was the High Street Kensington branch opposite the tube station, if anyone is interested.

I'm very tempted to get a second, it's a fantastic phone. My girlfriend has at least some idea how lucky she is!

Cheers again.

I would suggest getting back in touch with the seller and letting him know that the code didn't work. Most people who have reported on here have had no problems with the unlock codes at all. I seem to remember one report early on where a code didn't work but was quickly put right by the eBay seller. If I remember correctly, the seller had accidentally supplied the same unlock code to two different people but was very quick to acknowlwdge the mistake and corrected it.

Just double check that you supplied the correct IMEI number to the unlock seller. Don't go by the number on the box but check on the phone itself by going to '/Settings/About Phone/Status/Additional Status Info'.

Good luck.

What promotion did you use to get it for that price.

Don't recall seeing anyone comment on it. Double check the imei, if it's fine they could have entered it wrong their end I guess so check with ebay seller. Actually thinking back I think that has happened to someone.
