Does anyone know how to get the light to flash when you get a notification or something like that?

Pretty sure its automatic. There are apps on the market to test them and change colours etc. Just search for notification led or similar

I use an app called 'Light Flow' and there is a free version called 'Light Flow Lite'. With this you can make the LED flash different colours for different notifications. The Lite version does all the normal stuff like missed call, calendar reminders, Email, SMS, MMS, Gmail, low battery and many others. Personally, I paid for the full version because it adds support for Facebook notifications, Google+, Google Talk, twitter etc, etc, etc.

You can set individual colours for each notification as well as the flash rate, sounds and vibration. If IO remember rightly the full version only cost £1.40 or so and I think it is well worth it.

A lot of apps will let you customise it too. if you use Handcent SMS you can choose LED colour and flash frequency, Whatsapp lets you choose just LED colour. Quite useful

I think the LED only comes on when the screen is off.

Yes you are right. With Light Flow, to test the notifications you setup the screen needs to be turned off before the LED will turn on. Reading the instructions it appears that this is the case for many phones.
