Problems installing Jelly Bean ROM's

Hi,

For some reason my Blade III won't boot CM10 and CM10.1. I have been installing ROM's on all kinds of Android devices since the glory days of the G1 and never had any trouble before now.

Installing Aurora Borealis or Lewa works fine, but with both CM10 and CM10.1 the device shows the Cyanogenmod spinning logo and then freezes resulting in a boot loop.

Here is what I have tried so far:

- Wiping both before and after installation (factory reset, cache and dalwik) in all possible variations.

- Formatting system, data etc.

- I have checked MD5 checksums. All OK.

- Tried a different microSD card.

Any sugestions on what I can do next?

Thanks.

EDIT: Running Clockwork Recovery 6.0.2.7 btw.

EDIT2:

Made some progress. By entering recovery after boot loop and wiping dalwik and fixing permissions I get to the optimizing applications screen. Everytime it will freeze at some point during this time.

EDIT3: Went back to stock recovery and ROM (Swedish one) to start from scratch. Reinstalled CWM and tried to install CM10.1. Still the same problem. :(

Strange, if you can grab a log cat from ADB when you are in the boot loop it might shed some light on why it is not booting properly, apart from that the only thing you could do is try the download again and start again.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried redownloading a few times and installed different CM10-based ROM's and it's the same with all of them. ICS-based ROM's installs with no problem at all.

I will try to get a log cat and post it here.

What Lewa os? give me a link please.. :D

I too have this problem.

And after almost an hour latter and 11 reboots it has been installed but it freezes at random points while using it.

I also tried formating every partition that CWM can and no change at all.

The same thing happens if i tried to install 4.1.2 ROM also.

After several attempts i manage to record several Log-s.

after formating every partition except external-sd, i aways get to this error in process 109 - D/AndroidRuntime( 109): >>>>>> AndroidRuntime START com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit <<<<<<

All the error are from just this type:

Unable to open or create cache for /system/framework/****

It all starts after this:

W/dalvikvm( 377): msync failed: Read-only file system

E/dalvikvm( 377): DexOpt dep info: write failed: Read-only file system

D/dalvikvm( 109): Unable to process classpath element '/system/framework/core.jar'

And when actual install starts here is the state of all mounted partitions:

I think that the /system partition have to be RW at this point, so it almost certain a permission error.

Will be glad if some one would point me to direction how to remount system in RW while Installing clockwork

I see the problem is still unsolved, so maybe this will help a little bit.

I had had the same problem with phone freezing on the bootanimation, but after a few attempts it managed to finish booting. But it was catching freezes at random moments, while I was using it, as someone mentioned before. I had pulled out sd card to check if this was its error, but it didn't solve the problem. Then I started to play around with cpu governors and overclocking. And when I'd set the governor to "performance", so the one that fixes the cpu at constant frequency I found that the freezes were totally gone. Well, it would sometimes freeze on reboot, but I could normally use the phone. Attempts of changing cpu frequency (didn't matter if I was lowering it or boosting) were causing instant hang. Another clue is the fact that after such a freeze, while rebooting the phone the "Android is upgrading" screen was appearing, like dalvik cache had been wiped.

It happens only on JB roms, ICS works fine.

So the temporary fix is, once it finish boot, to set the governor to performance. Battery drains pretty fast, though.

Setting governor to perfomance will drain ur battery in one day. It keeps cpu at high clocks all the time, so ur device do not get to sleepmode, so you can use it about 10 hours I think before you need to charge :D

Exactly, I'm aware of this. The battery lasts about 15-17 hours of moderate use on performance governor. It's the only way to get rid of those freezes and be able to run JB I've found so far though. But I'm not a dev and don't have knowledge to look for the solution somewhere deeper.

Well, other way is to revert back to ICS ;)

Then its ok, I can live with my blade I, battery drains empty in one day with default use.

I had exactly the same problem flashing jelly bean roms. However, this post helped me a lot. So far I have managed to install CM 10 by KonstaT and Pacman rom and setting governer to "performance", emmediately after booting, made this roms stable. No more freezing for me, except while rebooting, but I can live with that. :) Now, is there an easy solution for setting "performance" as default governer? I do not have the knowledge to deal with editing kernel or something like that but I'm very much involved in basic stuff! :) Thanks in advance.

Simply tick "set on boot" option in cpu settings. This won't fix freezes on reboot though. Apparently the governor is being set at the end of booting process.

Of course, that's the first thing I did. I meant solution about editing rom (scripts in .zip file or something like that) before instaling, to get rid of the freezes, if it's possible. I want to try other roms like CM 10.1 or MIUI because I wasn't being able to boot them at all.

Not a single thing is true in that post. :P

Well, that's hardly a solution or even a proper work a round.

People who suffer from this should try finding commons factors in your devices instead (stock firmware version, hardware revision, etc). Maybe even try flashing a different stock firmware first. Official ZTE updates also include bootloaders and radio firmware that are not changed when you flash a custom ROMs. Does Aurora Borealis crash if you set CPU governor to something other than performance? Stock ROMs default to performance governor for some reason.

And to your questions, you can place a simple script to /system/etc/init.d/ to change governor during booting.

#!/system/bin/sh
echo "performance" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
[/CODE]

Well, that's hardly a solution or even a proper work a round.

People who suffer from this should try finding commons factors in your devices instead (stock firmware version, hardware revision, etc). Maybe even try flashing a different stock firmware first. I managed to use your CM 10, so it's at least a partial solution for me. The rom works now without freezes and since I don't turn off or restart my phone, I can be satisfied. In addition, there is a similar problem in my country with Huawei g300 phones and the people solved it with instaling a stock rom with diferent baseband. After that, they didn't have problem instaling roms so that's my next move. I will try to flash a different stock rom when I have time. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Oh I forgot to answer your question. Aurora booted and worked like a charm, no crashes when I change governor or overclock the device. Same thing with WorldEndBefore rom. Only Jelly Bean based roms had freezes and reboots.

Today I installed another stock firmware to try and fix problem with freezing and rebooting. However, no luck with that. I installed official non-branded build that I downloaded from link in stock rom topic (I think it was slovakian stock firmware inside update.zip) and after that tried to install CM 10. Freezes still ocure. Btw, that script for setting default governor to performance somehow doesn't work for me. I tried to write that in terminal emulator and got error. Something about not having the permission, not sure though, I didn't remember exactly.

Logs please (logcat & dmesg).

It's a script that you're supposed to save to /system/ect/init.d/ (/data/local/userinit.d/ also works). Save it as say 55governor and set permissions (755) to make it executable. You can of course echo the governor in normal rooted shell as well (use 'su' for root elevation).

Ok, latest update about this topic. I did what you wrote. Created script for setting performance as default governor, saved it into init.d folder, did the full wipe, flashed the rom and freezes and reboots are gone. :) Tested this on KonstaT CM10 and CM 10.1 and Chameleon rom. All 4 roms booted regularly and without freezes. :) However, as soon as i changed governor in settings, problem went back. So, the only way, for me, to use Jelly Bean based roms is to set the script and not messing with governors, which is something I can live with. Anyway, I want to thank KonstaT for sharing his knowledge and making the use of custom roms possible for me. Once again, this is the script, put it in /system/etc/init.d folder by the name 55governor and set permission like this rwx r-x r-x

And to your questions, you can place a simple script to /system/etc/init.d/ to change governor during booting.

#!/system/bin/sh

echo "performance" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

It worked, because this script sets governor to performance at boot as you had wished before. So nihil novi, we've already figured it out that performance works properly :P. It would be great to find some way to use all governors to reduce battery drainage.

Installing stock firmware didn't work for me neither. I will also mention that changing i/o schedulers doesn't do the job.

I've recorded logcat between boot and freeze.

Well, if you figured it out, why didn't you post the script at the firstplace? I am not a developer, I only have android phones for 6 months, blade 3 for a month. Excuse me for trying to learn how to solve problems. I tried something, it worked and I posted my findings to help others. :-p
