MWC 2014: Hands on with the Nokia X

1 post in this topic

Nokia have announced the X (and X+ / XL), their first Android based devices.

The devices, based on Android 4.1.2 AOSP, feature 4" screens on the X and X+ with a 5" version on the XL (all WVGA resolution), 512MB RAM / 4GB storage on the X and 768MB RAM / 8GB storage on the X+ and XL together with a 3 Megapixel camera on the X versus a 5 Megapixel camera on the X+ and XL.

While the underpinnings are Android AOSP, the user experience is very much Nokia, featuring the 'Glance' lockscreen, a Lumia-a-like homescreen and Asha-derived 'fast lane' recents experience.

As you can see in the video below, a quick scoot through the user interface reveals a reassuringly familiar Android feel with Nokia's inimitable style on top. Android apps can be sideloaded via ADB or using the included file manager application and in most cases will work without modification, provided Google specific APIs aren't used. App downloads are via the Nokia store, which will be curated to ensure quality.

The device feels solidly built and overall feels like a reasonable play for the low to mid market, even though the specifications are comprehensively outdone by the likes of the Moto G.

The X, X+ and XL will retail for €89, €99 and €109 respectively with growth markets being targeted initially with Dual SIM versions. The X is available today with it's siblings to follow in Q2.
