Unlocking the phone...

From time to time I would need to use a Vodafone SIM (when on call for work) in the SPV.

Has anyone successfully managed to get Orange to unlock their SPV yet? How much did it cost? (I assume its around 35 quid + the rest of your contract up front?)

I think you can buy the phone for 700 euros unlocked in Denmark, but in the UK it is only available locked to Orange.

I have heard rumours that a mastercode generator for the SPV exists and will be available soon, but currently this IS just rumour.

Orange's unlocking policy is £20 fee plus remaining line rental paid in full. It used to be £35 but went down quite some time ago. Currently this is the only way of unlocking the SPV.

hey thanx a lot for your help guys...

can i just verify something here... so the phone has a physical ability to be unlocked right? meaning there are number of ways to do it such as get it done by orange, or get the mastercode, either way it will be possible right>?? i am asking because i want to buy it, but i won't be using it at this point, so it does not really make it urgent, however i would have to confident that i will be able to get it done at some point in time and that it will not cost me a huge amount (orange option is out of the question for me, i won't have any contract with them and i am not even in europe) as for the purchase of the unlocked one from denmark, i think 700 bucks is a little harsh, while i have the ability to get a locked one for 500 here in us. so the only option left for me is getting it unlocked via a mastercode, so do you thing this will be availible soon? or not? thanx for all the help. and it all comes down to: i desperately want this gadget, but i am not buyng unless i know that i will be able to use it later.. and not at an expense of like 300 bucks... thanx again

Yep, it can definitely be done.

When I put a non-Orange SIM in my SPV, it prompts me for the unlock code.

I don't know it, but it obviously can be done!

If you do this are you then able to use the remaining months of your tarrif.

Will I still get my free mins per month for the rest of the 12 months

[email protected]

as for me, i bought mine here in us, for 509 bucks, shipped, it has not arrived (most likely next week) because of the holidays. it is locked though. so i am working on that now, i got to get this baby unlocked otherwise it is just a paperweight for 500 bucks... anyway, these are the only options that i could find, and i have been searching for a month now... so i am quite confindent there is no better way than these two... hope it helps... :D

yeah, i think he is trustworthy, i emailed him, he sounds like a really nice guy and responds really fast, the problem is the prices... on ebay, the prices are so high cuz some 0 feedback mo's jack up the price intentionally, so i would not recommend bidding... anyway, my phone is on its way, and i just hope that it will come from denmark unlocked, otherwise i am desperate for keygen or some other way to get it done...

Hi there...

I'm just really surprised why you all are so desperate to buy a phone for that much - especially the SPV! What is so great about it? I've used it, and quite frankly I wouldn't pay more than £20 for it... It has some serious issues at the moment...

For $1000 you could almost buy a new contract off the net, where you get one of these phones for free.... then pay off the rest of the year's contract.... then hire a developer to port Linux.... then you'll have a phone that is actually usable.. and you would have paid the same amount!

Honestly - have the people that have paid all this money for the SPV actually used it?! Unless you are just absolultly loaded, then I think you may be slightly dissapointed....... unless of course, Microsoft release an AMAZING service pack for it, and Orange lift the certificate thing for it so you can actually buy programs for it!

Whats with all of this negativity towards the spv?

I think you seem to have lost the actual point here. Remember what the spv is. It isn't a 3310, ask yourselves; Why did the 3310 and other such phones run so well?

They had no features! Standard green screen. Bog standard menu system, used solely to make and receive calls and to send and receive texts.

The spv isn't just a phone, just as the xda isn't.

So I know what your going to say, yeah; the xda isnt just a phone, but it ran great. I agree it did run great. But it was, at the end of the day...a pda which happened to be able to make calls.

The spv is a phone which can do a hell of a lot more.

Now im not saying the spv is perfect, because it isn't. But for what it is, its brilliant. Personally, I dont mind living with the bugs. Because at the end of the day, I'd rather have an spv in my pocket (or leather pouch) than a 3310. Plus with a free camera, cradle, memory etc, who can complain!

Does your pc never crash, when your pc crashes, do you throw it out of the window and never buy a pc again, no. You wait for a service pack, or a fix.

Remember, its new technology, its early days, and we're all still learning. Orange, Microsoft and the consumers. Be patient and i'm sure the problems will be ironed out.

Well Said Amo,

The thing has only been on sale a week. Nokias are far from perfect as anybody who bought a 7110 or to a lesser extent a 6210 will tell you. My 7110 was at the dealer getting reflashed for more time then it was next to my ear.

And I have a 6310i (2nd one) which decides to reboot whenever it feels like it (like when sending sms!). So a little more patience and (i am sure) that things will be working properly and updates will start to appear. get people using it. and get it fixed. They have built the ability to fix remotely using orange update into the phone. and the money that Orange must have paid HTC and Microsoft it is in their interest to get it sorted.

And if it doesn't -- Well something better is bound to be out soon anyway!

Just my view anyway.

Hi there...

No no no... I'm not against the SPV... afterall, I've been waiting for the Z100 since August 2001... so I'm well happy that something has come out with Smartphone 2002... its SOO cool to see that things are finally going the right way.

Incedentally, I'm doing a 3G project for my Research Methods module of my degree, and you can go here and see about it: http://www.funkyberry.com/3g.htm ... I'm totally up for 3G/4G, so I'm not going to turn down the next step in this direction.........

BUT................

There are some fundimental things that NEED to be sorted out on this phone, otherwise normal users will just rubbish this phone... realistically, all it can take is for journalists to have a bad experience with the phone, rubbish it in a review, and loads of people that haven't used it before will think its pants.....Lets give it time, and see if its the classic that the 7110 was....

And talking about the 7110... I got mine about March 2000, and I had it flash upgraded once... I'm running on version 4.88... and I haven't had any problems with it to date. For about a year I used the infrared with my Psion 5 as my only form of email access.

Yes the battery is pants, and sometimes it turns itself off... but I would say that this phone is one of the most reliable that I've seen of any of my friends.... and yes - the flip out bit still works as perfectly as if it had just came out of the box...

dsff

Hell to it.... if I can get a SPV for free, then I'll go and get it! :D

p.s. where is my signature thing?

p.s. ahh there it is!
