Howdy and welcome to the site!

GAPI is a gaming subsystem of sorts. It provides a means for a program to produce high speed graphics. Unfortunately, Mitac managed to screw it up so, out of the box, GAPI doesn't work and therefore a number of games and other high speed graphics apps (like Pocket TV) don't work. There are two ways to fix this as you've apparently noticed. First is the "wrapper" method where a module that DOES work is what is called by programs and it, in turn, calls the broken GAPI module (or GDI module, I'm not really sure) in a manner that the whole thing works. The downside is that it's slower than the other method where you import a certificate to the phone and PC, then sign the executables with that certificate. The end result is that it all lines up and the programs run on your phone at normal speed because there's no "middle man" as with the wrapper method. The downside of the resigning is that it's more complex. Personally, I do the second method because it's no big deal for me but if it sounds like more than you want to bother with, the wrapper method works fine for 95% of what will be calling it and you just install a cab file, no muss, no fuss.

There's no resolution to the Chinese MMS application, Mitac managed to screw that up (along with the program used to change radio bands) as well. Someone was kind enough to translate the basics so if you really want to use it, you can. I got it working but it's much cheaper and easier for me to send pix via email so that's what I do. The translated images (and the GAPI stuff mentioned above) are all available in this section of the site. Per jMMS, don't bother. jMMS came with the 8380 and you can pick the pieces out of an 8380 update package but it's set up for WM2002, not WM2003, and is a real pain to use, even harder than the Chinese app, believe it or not. I don't know of any other available MMS software, free or not.

I can't tell you what media player's problem with mp3s is, I have a separate mp3 player.

Finally, per IR, this one is easy... ;-) Go to Settings, select 9 (More) and the 1 (Beam). Check "Receive incoming beams" to turn IR on and uncheck it to turn it back off and select Done.

Personally, I really like the 8390, it's basically a good phone but, as you noticed, it does have a few problems. Come here for support, Mitac is a real turd of a company (I envision a couple guys chain-smoking in a warehouse with a metal door on which is spray-painted "Mitac" somewhere in Hong Kong) but the people here come up with informative and innovative answers and are happy to share them.

Check the topic "GAPI to GDI wrapper for 8390" in this section of the site. Both methods of fixing GAPI along with discussion is in that thread. It should be near the top of the topic list and marked as "sticky". The downloads contain all the information you need to implement either method.

Mio8390 is the best phone I ever had :D

It has flaws like chinese MMS app, but with the translation in hand I'm able to send MMS messages, so no big deal 8)

Besides, Mio8390 looks great to me, it's stylish and doesn't look like an artefact (C500 for example, or MPx220 which I personally also don't like), so doesn't scare people when you take it out of your case :P

It won't also attract thiefs because it looks like an ordinary phone...

It has 20MB of program memory free, so all multimedia apps like BetaPlayer or MP3 players will rock your phone

I have a feeling the battery is a bit loose, but I will fix it with a piece of a sticky paper :D

Comparison to mpx220 will be welcomed :P

All I noticed so far: mpx220 has smaller screen, less program memory free (a screenshot of About screen would be helpful) and makes blurry pictures with that 1.2MPx built-in camera :?
