What emulator in particular? Could you post a link? Does it run any good? I believe a gameboy advance emulator for smartphone would be terribly slow..

ok I got PocketGBA loaded on an MPx200 WM2003, but I can't interface with it. No ROM selection or anything, I'm using Version 1.0 of PocketGBA btw

Please do not post any links to sites offering GBA emulators. Nintendo recently applied for (and got) a patent that means only they can emulate the Gameboy advance on mobile platforms (including PDA, Mobile Phone, Mobile gameing device etc.), which makes all other GBA emulators illegal.

Well no links are needed, but what .exe did you use that worked on your smartphone? I think I have tried them all with no luck. Some will come up, but you can do anything. I tried, VBAdvanceCE (VBAdvancePPC.exe), PocketGBA (PocketGBA.exe), PocketAdvance (PocketAdvance.exe), and MorphGear (a multi console emulator) with no luck. I have WM2003. What Smartphone are you using and what Operating system? Is there another emulator I am missing or what?

Thanks agent.M, you just listed all of the above mentioned emulators.

Midnight, GBA emulation is not illegal as long as the emulation isn't optimised by recognising the ROM, it's part of their own patent and the only reason that Zodiac emulator, that got the first legal threat by nintendo on the basis of this patent, is still being distributed(even if it freeware). The point is crimson fire released the emulator against Nintendo's wishes because they felt that the emulator was not in breach of the patent, and they didn't get any flak from Nintendo over it.

The misconception that GBA emulators are illegal is widespread and I don't blame you for falling for it. The fact is all the GBA emulators I've seen for CE, are not in breach of that patent, and if they were, I highly doubt that www.zophar.net would host them.

all we are doing is obeying the rules as set by Nintendo themselves on their own website:

Can Websites and/or Internet Content Providers be Held Liable for Violation of Intellectual Property Rights if they are Only Providing Links to Illegal Software and/or Other Illegal Devices?

Yes. Personal Websites and/or Internet Content Providers sites That link to Nintendo ROMs, Nintendo emulators and/or illegal copying devices can be held liable for copyright and trademark violations, regardless of whether the illegal software and/or devices are on their site or whether they are linking to the sites where the illegal items are found.

Whether anyone agrees or diagrees with this is completely irrelevant, this is their wish and we will obey it.

i take it you will be removing all links and reference to the GBC emulator that is released already?

Well linked or not, I believe I have the same emulator the original poster says worked (PocketGBA.exe) and while the first screen will load, nothing else works (to chose ROMs or even see them for that matter). This ain't working for me.

It's sad that modaco's popularity has stolen its edge. It used to be *the* place for stuff for your smartphone. Now, every time something remotely interesting comes along, I have to go to google or a competing site to actually find the program (because it's out there, whether some cash-junkie corp likes it or not), then come back here and discuss it, but carefully, before the scared mods hack the comments to pieces.

Modaco gained popularity *because* it had things like the first software-unlock for the SPV (highly illegal by today’s censorship standards), the nes and gb emu's (ditto) and all the other fun (but I'm sure illegal by some standards) stuff that popped up when the SPV was in its heyday.

Today is seems like modaco has been reduced to another outlet for poorly written press releases by software companies looking to break into the mobile market.

I hope things change, I like modaco and really appreciate the work Paul and the admins has done for the site, but I think they are at point where they need to sit down and think about where they are taking this forum. Is it a valuable resource for smartphone users/programmers/hackers/whatever, or a hanango review/support forum... Or better yet, perhaps there's room for both?

I hope this will initiate a worth-while discussion rather than turn into a flame-war (or be censored); it would be nice to see what others think about this issue.

i agree with you, over the past few months i have become disillusioned with modaco, it used to be an independant forum, which it isnt anymore.. i used to own a siemens sl45 and used to be a member of club siemens, which was a great independant forum.. that is until it became an official siemens forum - at which point there were just too many rules enforced ( cant say this, cant say that)

Another point which annoys me, and dont take offence midnight... but i feel that the minute you became a developer (albeit of the excellent eclipse), you should not be a mod anymore, your opinions have become biased and negative to anything that affects your sales... all mods should be independant in my opinion... dont get me wrong mid, you have a vast knowledge of 'smartphoning'

These days , being a modaco member is like living under marshall law, which is one of the reasons i barely post here anymore

well, thats my humble opinion anyway

although i tend to agree with the past 2 comments you have to understand pauls position...because modaco has become so popular the site has more exposure, i mean we did have mr orange for a while remember. Paul cant risk getting in trouble because people are promoting hacks that are against laws/patents. Modaco isnt just some tacky warez site, pauls/the mods etc have put a lot of work into it and wont risk being shut down etc.

Let me set this straight......

MoDaCo has always obeyed the law as much as possible, MoDaCo has never been a place for warez. Software unlocking sotfware is NOT illegal in the UK and as far as i'm aware, isnt illegal in the US either.

Emulators have always been somewhat of a funny situation. Mostly the emulators themselves are perfectly legal, however, copyrighted roms are illegal, no matter what the excuse:

It is illegal to use backup software to back up the rom, so therefore any rom created with backup software is illegal.

It is not legal to backup a rom for archive purposes (eg in case the cartridge is lost), why? because of the above statement, and, even if you did manage to back it up, legally you can only back it up for use on the same hardware (so you cant back it up to play on emulators)

There is no such thing as a 24hr time limit.

Copyright law states that a copyright is valid for 75 years.

So, we all know roms are illegal, if we did a poll that said 'Be honest, who downloads emulators for freeware games only?' the answer would be.... no-one. And this is our problem, we know emulators, while legal, are being used for illegal purposes, that simple. And we cannot be seen to promote piracy. The above post says 'wrestlemania', hmmm, so you are playing a pirated game????

nintendo recently changed the way we see emulators in that they patented 'a software emulator for emulating a handheld video game platform on a low-capability target platform'. Now, there may be loop holes in the patent, i dont know, but would you take the risk? If someone as big as Nintendo said 'you must not do this with our IP', would you go against there wishes no matter how unfair it may be? I see why Nintendo is doing this (and currently they only seemed concerned with GBA emulation), GBA emulation is not emulating a 10 yr old gaming machine that no longer can be purchased (thats not an excuse either, but thats another argument). GBA is still selling well, as are its games, and, Gameboy DS has built in GBA emulation but not GB or GBC.

If everyone feels the same as you Unclelimey i will happily resign my post as Moderator, but i dont see why protecting MoDaCo by removing anything that can be deemed illegal could in any way be irresponsible/biased/unfair/or threatens our game development. I am protecting MoDaCo, not our game development.

Unfortunately this thread seems to be going the way of the megadrive thread, we realise that people want more games, but MoDaCo CANNOT promote piracy.

Nintendo specifically said illegal software, so you are free to discuss and share freeware nintendo emulators until Nintendo can prove in a court that said emulators are illegal. Right now, no emulators are illegal.

BTW did you know there's more resources for making GBA games on the internet than there are for making smartphone software?

Let me make some amendments. I wrote what I wrote earlier not because I want modaco to promote piracy and become some wannabe pr0n-pop-up eastern-European warez site, and it wasn't so much about games: I was reading about the java engine (another censored piece of software) and then when I read the censored piece on the GBA emulator, it was the drop that made it flow over for me.

I understand modacos popularity comes with a price, but there are two issues that need to be reviewed:

1. People that are members of this forum are generally clued up about search engines, p2p and warez, and have long gone made up their minds on their stand with regards to software piracy. If I want a piece of software that I know is on the internet for downloading (like the java engine), I'm going to get it and use it. Now if the link is on modaco, great, I save 2 hours of Google searches and a trip to p2p, but if it isn't, it's not like I'm going to have a change of heart and go, actually, let me not use it, because there might be some obscure copyright somewhere to someone. We have to be realistic about things like this, when a piece of software is so freely available on the net, there's no point of censoring it here, all you do then is diminish the value of this site.

2. 50.000+ members (congrats btw) are here for a reason. 10-20 software developers are also here, but for a very different reason ($). I would recommend that we don't alienate the first group to please the second group, who frankly would be here if the rules were lax or not, this is (currently) *the* forum for smartphone, you guys call the shots; don't volunteer to tie your hands behind your backs.

I think to suggest that MoDaCo has changed into some corporate outlet is somewhat wide of the mark!

The rule is, and always has been, no illegal software, and the only cases I can think of that are anywhere near 'censorship' are the rule preventing people posting links to the illegal Moto ROM, and now this, where Nintendo are quite explicit about their stance on it.

I'm definitely not going to get into the *same* argument again, but I will just echo what I've said above and that is that we run against the same set of rules we have since day one, nothing has changed...

We absolutely don't, at no point has any developer, 'professional' or otherwise, asked me to edit or remove content for their benefit!

And besides, if they did, I wouldn't!

oh right, so, say i find a website (and i do know of one) that has practically every ppc app/game and every smartphone app/game freely available then we should post on MoDaCo aswell?

Just because something is freely available on the net does not mean it is legal.

Totally agree. I think this is a case of being over zealous, with unfortunately the bad decisions of censorships which have been taken recently due to not enough knowledge. I think in those cases, the moderators should allow the posts until they have proof or certified knowledge of illegality. As for censoring discussion, like rom names, this is pure madness: what happened to free speech?

Arman68, as I said above, I think trying to keep the forum on the right side of the law is not a 'bad decision of censorship'.

I think suggesting that mods 'hack the comments to pieces' is a little exaggerated too, you'll find that posts are of course very rarely edited.
