converting a DVD to view on my SPVC500

i have tried 3 or 4 times now to convert a DVD to MPEG1 using various guides and various software.

has anyone managed to do this & the end result work?

if so some hints & tips would be very much appreciated.

what i did.....(takes about 4-5 hours in all)

1. used dvd decryptor to rip my original to my pc hard drive

2. used dvd2avi to get the sound

3. used TMPGEnc to convert the files to MPEG1 using templates that the pocket tv people supply.

4. used MPEG splitter to split the 650mb MPEG file into 3 parts

i also installed Pocket TV onto my SPVC500 so i could watch the MPEG

what happened ....

the first part of the mpeg plays, but is massivly out of sync with the audio.

the other 2 parts do not play at all.

i then used DVDx to rip the dvd & convert to mpeg1 (all in one prog).

the mpeg file was split again into 3 parts, upon playing on the spv, nothing al all....black screen.

please help, i just wanna be able to watch a film on me phone!!

Rather than going the mpeg route, why not try divx?

pocketdivxencoder should be able to help you out.

and use betaplayer to view the lovely results ;-)

im not sure if you would need to prepare the VOB files in any way before using pocketdivxencoder however. It may be a case of using something like dr. divx to create a high quality divx file, then using pocketdivxencoder to redo it to a more convenient phone size.

i tried using the tmpeg enc and didnt have much luck myself.

Hi guys - sorry, but I'm gonna stick my oar in too! :)

I use SmartRipper to get the film off the DVD onto the PC (can't remember where I downloaded this, it's freeware so just Google for it or something!), then just use "Pocket DivX Encoder" to get it straight into a little tiny file all ready for Betaplayer to run on the phone.

Pocket DivX Encoder is here, if you're interested:

DivX Encoder Homepage

I can get a film over from DVD to MiniSD in less time than it takes to watch it (just about). 8)

My 2 cents:

SmartRipper (cos I can choose scenes rather than doing a full movie ... please 1Gb mini-sd, come down in price!)

Dr. Divx to customise bitrate and screen

PocketDivXEncoder to finish it off

Then BetaPlayer and my C500 clipped to my sunvisor!!!!

i have now managed to get the mpegs to work a treat...just the quality is very poor (a 4.5gig film to 80 meg is gonna be poor!).

i converted a simpsons dvd, as its a cartoon the visual quality is not so important, other films tend to suffer & are very blocky. if anyone knows how to improve this with a larger filesizse, please post here!

didnt have much sucess with divx....no audio was present....but i will have another try, the process was a damn site quicker...1.5 hours or so in total.

also tried to download smartripper, but its german...so no good to me!

I think the tools I used for converting DVDs to MPG are:

DVD Decrypter

AutoGK (Auto Gordian Knot)

TMPGenc

When I converted full length movies to MPG, the file sizes were approximately 100MB. The quality compared to the full digital copy on the PC is drastically lower, but you have to expect that when shrinking the video size down, and the frames per second down as well.

I prefer the PocketTV software over betaplayer. Thats why I went the MPG route.

I just ripped my Rocky Box set :D

I used DVD Decrypter then DVD2AVI where I created a DivX file which i then manipulated in VirtualDub using the filtes to rotate and resize. Simple :D

u only need to apps to rip dvd's to smartphone.. and both are automated freeware

smartripper to rip from dvd to vob's

then use pocketdivxencoder to convert to avi's

others have said they loose quality??!! i dont loose any at all really and people at work are well impressed with seeing eric prdyz in wicked quality on my phone :D

use betaplayer for playback as this is the best IMO

I know there's lots of free tools and stuff, and don't get me wrong, I've used them all in my days and love them... www.doom9.org and the gordianknot package is fantastic... but...

I also bought this for my smartphone ripping cos it's so damn easy

http://www.makayama.com/dvdtosmartphone.html

Put in the dvd, run the app, choose from either speed/quality (for c500 always choose quality) and click go. That's it.

did anyone metion windows encoder 9? its what i use for my mp3 -> wma and it does seem to have video capabilities too.

The real question is not quality, it's file size at a given bitrate and what bitrates are equal with the different codec’s.

Encoding with higher bitrates should always get you a better picture, but also a larger file. Also audio is a concern as the DVD to SmartPhone app listed above has horrible audio settings that I find unlistenable.

I have been creating VCD, SVCD, DVD, Xvid, Divx for many years for standalones, computers, pocket PCs, and now SmartPhones and while all in one programs like "DVD TO MOBILE" are descent they are not best.

For me Xvid around 150 KBPS (2-Pass) with 11.5 Hz Stereo sound around 24KBPS is perfect. Movies are about 100-130MB so I can fit 2 on my 256MB card.

I notice most are using Divx which you should check out this Coded comparison from Doom9. (Not as good as most think, especially for detail.)

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-104-1.htm

Here is Doom9s Ripper comparison.

Just so people can see and decide for themselves I encoded the Open Water Trailer in both XviD and Divx.

Divx 5.2.1

150 kbps (2-Pass)

MP3 24 kbps 11.025 Hz Stereo

http://wap.x2-hosting.com/movies/OpenWater(DIVX).avi (2.22MB)

XviD 1.0.3

150 kbps (2-Pass)

MP3 24 kbps 11.025 Hz Stereo

http://wap.x2-hosting.com/movies/OpenWater(XVID).avi (2.14MB)

Personally I open them with Media Player (Desktop) and set the size to 200% to see what the file really looks like. The trailers are formatted for the SmartPhone (220x176) and look good in BetaPlayer.
