cingular media package questions for mpx220

I am a current subscriber of cingular and am signed up to use there "media works" package. I was under the impression that this package includes unlimited data connectivity. However I just checked the cingular website and noticed that they have a different package called "media net" and this was broken down into different bandwidth usages. I looked more into the "media net" package and looked at the listing of compatible phones. surprisingly the mpx220 isn't listed as one of the compatible phones!

so i'm wondering if cingular changed the specifics of thier "media works" plan so that it now doesn't include data. or is the mpx220 in some loop hole that allows it to have unlimited internet while still on the "media works" plan. the difference between the two plans is 5 bucks so it isn't anything major, but i'd still like to know what the difference is if any.

Without me going into too much details, just get the $19.99 package. This allows UNLIMITED access to the internet, POP/SMTP mail, Text messages and multimedia messages...

It seems to be designed to confuse one doesn't it. The MPx220 works with both packages. I have the unlimited data package and Media basic. Forget the website, it's hopeless and always out of date. Call Cingular serive or go to a store. They'll have the scoop on what's avaialble in your area.

MadSci,

Any particular reason why you have both? Just curious...

Trust me on this one. Media net/works is purely for "mobile internet". Cingular tracks their data with two different values. One is for WAP and the other is for full web browsing via IE or whatever engine you use. If unlimited REAL internet use is what you need...inquire about the Unlimited Data connect for 39.99. The other MEdia packages are for checking email, downloading tones, games etc. Dont be fooled, it will cost you big time. All PDA's, blackberrys, and smartphones follow this same category. Everyother handset uses media net bundles.

hmm.. i have had the media works package for roughly 3-4 months and haven't been charged any extra for my data connections. for instance i was connected to the internet using my phone as a modem and used nearly 30 megs of data transfer and didn't inccur any extra charge.

me too, i used like 20 last month over the last two weeks of the billing cycle (mostly from using the modem link with my laptop) and i didn't get charged. i was at a store and heard a sales guy telling this customer who was getting a blackberry that the unlimited data package was 40 bucks and it didn't come with text messages or anything. I asked him, "isn't it 20? i have unlimited data with text messages for only 20." he said, "that's cause you have a phone, not a pda" kinda snooty like, which is fine with me. i really do think the only difference is phone vs pda. if they want to consider it a phone then i don't mind paying 20 instead of 40.

Yup, the Unlomited data package applies to data flow from the internet. It DOESN"t cover text messages or MultiMedia Messaging, which I am interested in.

BTW, I've confimed with CIngular that the "Unlimited Data" packaage covers essentially just the Internet access. Since I get my email via the Internet accessing an IMAP account, that gets me my email.

To confuse everyone, Cingular has its own email service, which is different, and is NOT covered in this data package. TO use its "Express Mail" you need the other type of data package (that will also deliver Text and Multimedia messages).

Simple isn't it.

Quick question.

I have been experiencing annoying inability to connect to GPRS after some period of time. This is then fixed by reseting the phone.

I called yesterday and was told that the reason for this is that I use the MEdiaWorks package which is not geared for the bandwidth I use, so it eventually chokes and refuses my connection. The support person said that the Media Net package would fix this.

Also, I read on the website that with MediaNet you can receive both GPRS and voice calls? This is not currently the case with my phone. When a call is in progress, no GPRS connection can be made.

Any ideas? Do any of you Media Works users have connection refusals remedied by a phone power cycle? :?:

I have the $19.99 Unlimited package and it is sweet. Some months I hardly use any data transfer but recently I have basically been streaming music and using as a modem for mmy lappy. Definatly worth the $$ now!!

This is a becoming a serious issue. No one, not even Cingular have a clue about this "MediaNet or MediaWorks" service! I have to at least once a day reboot my MPx220 if I want to connect to the internet or check my email via POP3. I think this happens after I move from area to area and thus lose service. I think because it picks up service again, it does not know how to handle a request for a connection till it reboots...

Let me call Cingular AGAIN to clarify which service I should be using for Internet and email (POP3)...

Ok, just got off the phone with Cingular. Those of us that have MediaWorks are going to profit. Why? We basically have all the features, Text, Multimedia, and Internet, and more importantly, if we're browsing the Internet, we can still receive a call, same with checking emails. I just tested it too, and yes I could browse this forum and still receive a call...

Hopefully we can put this to rest now, no?

well... other than the fact that I have to f$%#ing keep rebooting my phone...

I've tried everything possible and it is really frustrating. I can't rely on this phone as robust email solution since I may have emails that can't be delivered to me. I guess I suck for still prefering it over a blackberry... :x

I totally agree, this is why I only use the feature for email to check it manually, not automatically...

I guess we can't have our cake and eat it too...

A little off topic, but I'm not able to stream anything. I thin this is a software issue. Can anyone point me to a thread on straming audio?

Thanks

streaming works for me fine by entering a URL in WMP.

The stream is pretty choppy, due to the non consistent data rate, but it work in general.

I'm still looking for people to test out NetLeash, my app which tries to address this issue. Just browser your MPx220 over to here: NetLeash.

More complete details can be found here: MPx200.org Posting.

The software is beta, but feedback has generally been positive -- it might not solve the problem, but it may greatly reduce it.

Ok, maybe it's me, but browsing the internet from the phone takes so long and because "most" sites are not geared towards phones/PDAs it's really not practical.

Quesiton I have is, are people going to sites designed for Smartphones and or PDAs? If yes, can I have a few ideas for sites? For example even viewing this site from my phone, can take up to two minutes, then to add a forum message, well, nough' said...

you can try opera - their browser uses a gateway that compresses the data and provides much faster downloads than PIE. Unfortunately, I prefer the functionality of IE (navigation, layout etc...). Otherwise, PIE is like back to using a dial up modem...
