Guest KenM Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 I've just initiated my first backup using xBackup. I'm backing up everything in RAM to a 256Mb SD card. In total there's around 37Mb of data. At this rate it looks like it's going to take well over an hour. Can this be right? Does anyone else have ecperiance of this problem? I don't remember if the initial backup took longer but I would expect that to be the case. I would backup again and see how long it takes that time. I have two cards - a 32 Mb from Orange (free with my M2K) and a 1Gb from Corsair (via scan.co.uk... recommended ;)) - the 1Gb will do backups in about 1/2 the time that the 32Mb card takes. Acticesync does all my contacts and diary stuff, and I can just copy everything else into a PC folder. So I dopn't really see the point of xBackup, unless you can make regular shceduled backups. I backed up everything onto a storage card - much better performance this time it only took about ten minutes. I put the card in the new phone and started a restore. Got to 33 percent, phone rang. I made the mistake of answering it. The call was fine but xbackup stalled at 33 percent. And when I cancelled the backup the phone was so f$%%&^%ed I had to do a hard reset. Now I have another problem which is nothing to do with xbackup. On mu 'old' XdaIIi, which I had for a week before it was replaced, I installed Adobe Reader and a couple of ebooks. It has this hideous DRM thing where the reader on your PC and Pocket PC device have to be 'Activated' I think you are then limited to reading only on these two devices. Which means I can't now read my ebooks. Anyone know if there's an easy way round this? I really don't want to have to pay a second time. More generally, I'd add that while I respect the the right of authors, musicians etc to protect their copyright, it's exactly this kind of thing that makes DRM a total PITA. You might need to go through their customer support. If they refuse to transfer them, they may be breaking trading laws, but with the internet all these things are out the window really, because who knows what country they could be registered in. Good faith counts for a lot. Be nice, and they'll likely do it without a second thought. Just explain the situation. If they aren't nice, there are a number of things you can do. This is why DRM sucks big time. The only people it affects are legitmate users. Pirates just get the hacked version with the DRM removed. So, in essence, the illegal product is actually superiour to the legal one, as it is more flexible! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!! Here goes with restore attempt number 2... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> yeah - if ANY program is running then Xbackup will crap out - including ActiveSynch. you do need to isolate the phone while it's running.
