Orange - Where's the update already?!?

Everybody on this forum seems to be patiently and calmly awaiting the new ROM update.

I say to heck with that!

Orange's behaviour as of late is ridiculous. They are really starting to drop the ball big-time in regards to Smartphones and PocketPC phones.

Remember when they used to be at the forefront of releasing new products from HTC?….now look at them….M500 still isn’t out yet, while T-Mobile has had the MDA Compact for how many months now?

And what are they doing with this ROM? Enough with the procrastination and testing already! That company must be so bogged down in red-tape that it’s not funny!

Maybe they should just change their name from Orange to Red.

Tell me I'm not alone in my frustration?

PS - forgive me if my rant has violated any forum rules.

With the C550 on it's way, why would Orange be wanting to make any effort with new Roms etc on the C500 - anyone would think they cared about existing customers ;)

I've already got a list of things I need to mention to Mr Blair, so maybe I'll add this to the list and see if he can help #-o

You guys should take it up with your MPs, MEPs, George Bush, whoever....

It's no good moaning about it on here !

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think that's a little unfair. In the absense of any info from Orange, and a disappointing lack of response from Paul, what else are people meant to do?

Actually, Orange themselves have not said anything about the ROM update for C500. It's solely due to an announcement made to this forum by Paul, almost 2 months ago. Now, I'm not trying to say it's Paul's fault or anything, but I have said often before, as a long term member of modaco, I assumed on seeing that post that Paul had been contacted by someone at Orange to say that the update was 'imminent'. Since then, no further comment has been made, and there doesn't seem to be any kind of response from Paul, or Orange.

Now, I know Paul isn't God (or at least, not yet!), but it would be nice to feel that the forum administrators are on our side. I don't think anybody can now justify the length of time between the announcement made here, and the update still being unavailable - despite it being released on new C500's and being leaked onto the net ages ago.

Now, I know that no one at modaco can influence Orange, and their reputation concerning updates is well shady, but it would be good to feel like the modaco community is united in at least expressing disatisfaction at the long wait, and that we had the support of the administrators too. After all, it is the members of modaco that make it great, not any allegiance to Orange (no matter how many M2000's they give out for competitions!).

So, I say rant away lads ... I'm with you!!

People have been making the same comments about Orange and ROMs pretty much ever since the first SPV was released.

It's nothing new, which is not to say that we should all have a good whinge and moan about their lack of speed or action. Rewind 2 years and a similar situation existed with the SPV, SPV E-100 and the 1.5ROM, which eventually surfaced many months later.

We can only hope that now there are more manufacturer/operator combinations than HTC/Orange, the disgruntled vote with their feet and buy other devices from other networks if Orange aren't cutting the mustard.

Either that, or install another operators' ROM until Orange do get their arse in gear, not that I would condone such action.

If you want your new phones quicker then move here to holland as the m500 has been in our orange shops for a while now , if you want rom updates stay there in the uk as on the rom updates holland is way behind the m1000 still has no update and so far the dutch are waiting for the first c500 update , the update the uk had last year has still not arrived here

Sorry, I didn't mean to cause offence. Blame my sense of humour on a hot sweaty day when I'm struck down with flu and everyone else is in the beer garden

What morpheus2702 said really, along with a general cynicism with a consumerist society that seems to expect unfettered capitalists to care two hoots what their customers think they're owed. Is there anything in the Orange contract or the SPV manual that mentions firmware upgrades ?

My views are not to be taken as the views of the admin / mod team as a whole, who I'm sure are as frustrated as the rest of you. Paul does keep the forum informed but, if he has nothing new to report, then his position prevents him from speculating publicly. Surely ?

(I don't speak for Paul either, so apologies to him too)

Finally, didn't someone get a mention of the update's imminent release from an Orange CS ? That was some time ago clearly.

Big love to all though :D

I was just trying to 'moderate' peoples' expectations. ;)

No offense was taken Stu - I'm just ranting! :D Personally I wouold rather there was a forum rule that updates cannot be mentioned at all (even by mods) until they are released! ;)

Yep, and to anyone that PMs me - my post wasn't alluding to me having the ROM or the crack - just a simple statement that sooner or later, someone would!

Aren't there two separate issues at stake here?

1. The fact that Orange UK have not released a update that has been available in French for some considerable time now. IMHO, this is an "Orange UK", not an "Orange" issue. Is it really a problem? I mean, would people be complaining if an update had never been mentioned and had never existed in any language? I doubt it. (Yes, some might have posted off-the-cuff questions like "isn't it time for an update?" etc, but they would be the minority.) Simply cast you minds back to before there were any updates and then do a search before this time for complaints about an update. So, IMHO, all we can say is that Orange UK are slower than Orange France and Orange Netherlands are slower than Orange UK. I would say that most multi-national companies have countries that operate at different paces, so really it's not that surprising or unusual. However, if people feel strongly about it, perhaps they should contact France Telecom's CEO and ask why? ;)

2. Expectations not being met. Paul said that he'd been informed that a UK update was imminent. This set an expectation that has not been met. But look - what was Paul to do? Keep the information to himself? I see that indeed there are some calls (tongue-in-cheek perhaps) now that any posts that "an update is about to happen" should be banned, IMHO a retrogressive step, particularly as if the update had happened soon after, I doubt very much whether anyone would then say "Paul, you should not have told us about this"! So, let's not shoot the messenger here. Paul passed on some info that he got and it seems in retrospect the info was not right. Let's let Paul deal with that rather than get on his back. If the update happens, it happens. If not, then so be it - the world will still spin and I will still die, so in the mantime I'll continue with things that I can do something about.

Just my two groats worth.

Don't know if you have all seen my latest post on this issue, but the udate is coming, just don t know when... so an orange rep told me a couple weeks ago. personally, I'd rather pay £35.00 to HTC Europe, the manufacturer for the update, rather than buying a c550 from orange to further their profits and maybe inconsideration for existing customers. I've not had my c500s long and much prefer it to the c550. Besides, if people start going out and getting new phones, then orange has won, and their attitude will not change. On the other hand if people hold out then orange might get the message and sort things out.

Firstly...

I think all we really want is, as ive said before, an official date or statement from Orange UK, hopefully with a date, (if its coming at all)

If i had an official date, i wouldnt think about or get annoyed about where is the ROM update

If the date wasnt going to be met, orange just issue another realistic date, thatll be fine wih me.

All we want is to be 'informed' and not to be felt like some low life scum who doesnt deserve any information.

Secondly...

I personally am happy for Orange to pump out a new smartphone every year, ill get it for free on contract, so there loosing out. And i sell ma old one for £50 :-) as usual

Thirdly...

"Old customers get the same ****** as new customers", is it only me or have there new ads changed.

They used to say ..

"old customers are entitled to the same deals new customers are"

since millions have complained (and i was one) there ad now says...

"old customers are entitled to deals just like the new customers"

infuring there might be two sets of deals, as ever before.

Has Mr Orange been declared legally dead yet?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

;) If only he was still around to witness the deja vu over Orange updates!! But sadly, I think the e100 update fiasco was what put him in the grave! :D

I imagine the reason the French ROM was released and then progress on the English ROM stalled is because Orange is now owned by French Telecom.

Hmm, I know we have plenty of reasons to dislike our cheese-eating surrender monkey Gallic cousins, but I think Orange have been owned by French Telecom since before the start of the SPV program? They are pretty even-handed in seeing which nation's users they p*** off by delaying ROMs.

I would like to stay loyal to Orange, but they really make it difficult with their lack of service.

I mean, just look at the M500. What a fiasco! Talk about being last out of the gate.

With models like the ETEN M500 coming out with 128MB memory and a promised Windows Mobile 5 upgrade, Orange's M500 is already obsolete and it hasn’t even been released yet!

Are they intentionally trying to lose market share?
