IRC via GPRS --> Ping timeouts

Hey folks,

after my MPx200 has been broken, I bought a cheap Mitac Mio 8380 at eBay. (Stating, that the external LCD is broken, but it isn´t - well I won´t complain)

I´ve got the following problem, which occured to me on the MPx200 and WM2003 as well:

When connecting to IRC (regardless of which program I use and regardless if it´s a proper application or a java midlet), I can connect - however a few minutes after that I get a ping timeout.

On the other hand I don´t have problems with disconnects on Agile Messenger.

Does anyone have an idea, what causes this? The IRCd is: UnrealIRCd 3.2.3

Best regards

Jens

could it be that you loose gprs coverage or something?

Hey,

I somehow doubt that, as I´d expect AgileMessenger to respond similar then. On the other hand.....maybe IRC does faster ping timeouts?

Really don´t have an idea..

I dont personally use agilemessenger but I could imagin it is like msn messenger which has a very high timeout rate, I hardly never logout of my phone, but the irc pingtime out doesnt take a phone into concideration since it is server based. So the server would check to se that you are still connected every 60-120 sec or what ever the irc standard is...

I dont know if this is the case but I would think so...

Try connecting, leaving the phone in a place with good gprs coverage for a while and check if it will disconnect...

Hey just did that - the reception was at maximum, but the connection was dropped anyway. This leads me to the conclusion, that eplus (a German provider) must be the culprit. Anyway I don´t understand, why I don´t get disconnected from things like AgileMessenger when being idle.

I also checked another IRCd (Bahamut) - so this probably won´t be the problem either. I´ll try GPRS by t-mobile tomorrow.

if it still doesnt work with tmobile, could it be that the app is stopped when the phone is in standby? what happens if you leave the flip open and you set the power settings to maximume?

Hey all,

luckily I found a solution! I yet haven´t figured out, why this works, but it does:

It seemed, that the ping timeouts were caused due to inactivity (although I did set "never disconnect" in the settings). So either you keep on talking quite a lot OR you´ll ask the IRC staff to reduce the ping-frequency in the configuration of the server to 30 seconds. This at least worked on the german-freakz-Network, where I´m chatting.

Oh and by the way: Since the IRC-apps for Smartphone 2002 so far are pretty crappy, I recommend using the JAVA Midlet WLirc (http://wirelessirc.sf.net) . It has VERY much functions, it´s free and the project still is active, so further improvements are to come. (hopefully :) )

Best regards

Jens
