JasJar and Push Email - Smartner alternative

Hi All

thought I would just share my experiences with regard to a push email solution on my new gadget !

i have been an avid fan over the last year of Smartner Duality......it was a great solution......

however, since the Seven merger, the service is diabolical......frequent server drop outs, no email for days, absolutely appalling technical support who NEVER get back to you (well, not actually always true, the last email reply i had was only 6 WEEKS after i sent it !!!)

so..........with much regret, i started to look around at alternatives......

now, i know many people have Exhange Servers for their email, but a lot don't.......hence why the Smartner solution was so great

i decided to take the plunge and obtain a hosted Exchange server and found www.4smartphone.net - great service, absolutely easy to set up and only $6.99 a month..........

now, for those like me that were unsure what Exhange gives you (particularly a hosted service) it stores all your emails, contacts and calendar on a secure encrypted backed up daily server (in the US for this service).......it means that any device (Smartphone, Pocket PC, laptop, desktop) can all connect (and simultaneously) to the server and have synchronised data....delete an email on a smartphone and the change will be reflected on all other connected devices....

a choice of POP retrieval (and leave on server, or collect and delete) or you can point the server to your email server or finally, you can simply forward your email to your exchange account..........the 'send from' address will remain whatever email address you currently prefer - even through their servers

i use a C500 for a phone and a JasJar as my Data device.......both on GPRS and with Active Sync set to sync ever 15mins (on the JasJar) during office hours (every 1 hr on the C500)

the $6.99 service also allows Outlook 2003 to synchronise (and cache offline) so if you have always used Outlook for Sync and email, then you won't notice the difference.....in fact, if you haven't got Outlook, the subscription includes a cd or download of the latest version !

a web access version of Outlook allows you the familiar interface via any web browser

for me, with the JasJar permanent memory and the fact that data is stored remotely, i do not need to worry if the laptop broke/is stolen, or my pda......a new device can connect to the server and instantly download all my data......

i spoke with the guys over at 4smartphone and they say they will deploy the 'Push Email' update (SP2 of Exchange2003) as soon as they have received/tested...then we don't even need to Active Sync, emails will simply appear on any connected device that is running the new WM5 (JasJar etc)

as i said, i know many people will read the above and think 'ok, cheers but what's new??' - it's more for the people like me who want to be as data secure (and paranoid of loss!!!) and try something a little different !

it may sound like an advertisement for the 4smartphone guys - it's not, there are many other hosted exchange providers out there - it's just this one is an easy step by step way of aiming toward push email (they will be running push email by the end of the year)

cheers !

Mark

I need to find a replacement to Smartner as well. The issue is that I still have to connect to our own exchange server in a fashion simular to Smartner.

Imap access is out of the question. Any thoughts on alternative products would be appreciated.

Tell me about it. Does it allow access to an exchange server thats tucked away behind a firewall. The beauty of Smartner was that we didnt need to open anything up on the firewall. It just worked....

Whats the cost?

you can point the 4smartphone servers to your work exhange servers for sync .....

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

My problem is that I cant open up any ports through my firewall. This is why Smartner has worked so well. The connection was initiated from the inside.

I have had a look at 4smartphone and its no good for me. We dont have pop3 access to our server, i cant forward any email to an external account and changing my MX record is not an option.

For personal use, connected to a pop3 server it could be fun with the jasjar but its not a real smartner replacement....

thanks for pointing them out to me though
