The MDA Compact 2 may explain why when it is released.

Really looking forward to that device coming out as find it difficult to believe it could run WM5 unaltered, added to which the pics feature NO softkeys. I'm tempted to believe the MDA Compact II is just a 128meg version of the MDA Compact. ie, NO WM5.

Any news on a UK release date? WM5 on a magician sounds perfect for me - a little less thickness than the wizard and no sliding keyboard (my experience of sliders on a Palm and an old Nokia leads me to believe they're going to be the first thing that fails).

That's the one for me...

i'm betting the compact ii will be based on the htc prophet, rumour specs of it match the prophet

http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-prophet-en.shtml

i'm sure you can have wm5 with no physical soft keys though since you can touch the bar on screen where the word is aswell.

True on the softkeys. Not sure about it being the Prophet though because lots of peeps claim to have seen pics of the Magician labelled as MDA Compact II.

From what i've seen and read, there are a few MDA Compact variants around.

First is a facelifted HTC Magician - relabled contacts and calendar buttons to Start Menu and OK/Close (which you can rebind as such on the original Magician), also looks to be available in different colours (blue black and pink)

Secondly is the HTC Prophet, touted to be the MDA Compact II or O2 XDA Atom, its a revamped Magician with 2MPix camera, 128MB of (presumbaly persistant) memory and WM5 - looking at the mobile review pics you can see there _Are_ hardware softkeys, they're the two lines on the top left and right between the dpad and the call keys.

I don`t believe wm5 will ever come out on the magician till somebody hack the Os from another device like the magician2. Still think this wont happen because all new wm5 devices have totally different sort of ram and most importand cpu`s, wich make the work a little bit more complicated.

Maybe we`ve got luck and an onofficial internal (and of course illegal) rom will be posted on some p2p network (happend before with the smt5600/c500)

^ unlikely as they never worked for alot of reasons and as well as this - do not install illegal ROM's/OS's for alot of reasons

why screw up your device? why dont you just live with what you have and look forward to purchasing the next device with your requirements? :)

the effort and hassle is not worth it - just get a device that is KNOWN to work with the OS or at least has the OS you want - some celluar networks ARE providing an upgrade of the OS depending on the network and device.

I agree, why this urge for WM2005? Everything I've read about people upgrading, they've seen no difference except everything slows down! Persistant memory is a plus, but should anyone need it these days? My battery never gets lower than 30%. And half your software won't work!

Rant over, sorry.

Its like Magpies and shiny things though isnt it? When you see something new and exciting you dont want to wait when you know you can have it now. I always updated the ROMs on my phones, although its rarely made much positive difference. I still do it though...its a shiny thing. :)

I agree that some of your software wont work, but I have heard reports that some PPC 2003 s/w ARE working on the WM5 devices, MDA Compact II to be precise.

Hey, I only said HALF your software won't work :)

Saying that, if a WM5 upgrade became available for my Qtek S110, I'd install it in a heartbeat....you're right jamesb, definitely a magpie thing. The life of a Gadget Geek is never an easy one. Never happy are we?

I think the upcoming year will be a year in wich a lot developers (especially with EA in the bussines) will bring games out for the 2005 os only (look at the direct3d possiblities!). Hopefully the change from 2003se to 2005 will be not as fast as I think it will be so I can use my magician a little bit longer! But for on the moment Im still pretty happy

without Wm2005 (especially with all the compabilty probs).

My contract with my MDA Compact is almost up, but I'm now torn between the Wizard and the S110. My Compact does everything well but TT5 is dogged by the memory which is just capable of running it (with regular crashes). I'm thinking the S110 would address this but the magpie in me would like WM5 but not sure how the slower processor would cope with video (I watch a fair bit on the device). What's your experience with the S110?
