Warring Nations VGA by Inscenic

Warring Nations VGA is a turn-based strategy game.

The first world pack produced for Warring Nations is Medieval Heroes, where the action is set in medieval times. These are times of noble lords, great battles and glorious victories.

As one of medieval lords, you are given a chance to unite all territories under your own control!

Based on Risk style strategy gaming, Warring Nations leads you into a world of medeival Europe and ancient power struggles. Your mission is to change history and win the day.

Setting up the game

First you need to select who you would like to play, there are a massive 23 different characters you can choose from, covering most of medieval Europe. With this selection you can re-live history and play the part of Joan of Arc or Robin Hood to famous kings like Richard the Lion Heart. To add to this variety each character has a different set of skill levels so not battle will be the same.

Once you have decided who you are going to play you then need to decide on where you would like your campaign to take place. There are three maps available as standard, Medieval England, Europe and Fantasy Land with more available from the Inscenic website.

Now to set your difficulty level and then it's time to play the game.

Game Play

Now the easy part is out of the way it's time to get to grips with playing the game.

As you can see from the map screenshot below there are a wide range of tabs with different options without refering to these you will find it impossible to win a game.

The top of the screen gives you your general information about your resources and the size of your campaign army.

Below that are the tabs for Trading and Recruiting your forces while at the bottom of the screen are the options for adjusting your resource production, castle building and transfer options for moving your soldiers from the campaign to defending your lands.

While you can transfer funds and build your defences up one important decision you have to make is to decide wether you want to attack or recruit more soldiers on each round as you can not do both at the same time.

When it's time to do battle you have two options, quick battle or animated battle.

The quick option is my favourite as graphically the battles are the only weak point in the overall appearance of the game. The other reason is that being a turn based game I want to get moving and into my next turn.

After each round you are given an updated report of the event in the last turn, these can range from losing land due to attacks or revolts to production information and declarations or war from your opponents.

Summary

Well laid out game with the VGA graphics clear and well drawn. This is one of the hardest games I have played in a long time and is certainly not a walk in the park.

For those who like turn based strategy games this is one for your collection.
