I too thought the battery life on the SPV sucked big time, them I made a discovery. The following document is the official docs from HTC for the phone and in my opinion is much better than the Orange one:-

If you read it carefully, you may find you are leaving the GPRS connection open which makes a huge difference. When you enter Internet Explorer, MSN, etc you get the little G symbol in the top right over the top of the signal strength. If you hit HOME or BACK to access other apps, THIS STAYS ACTIVE. The manual states you only get 2 HOURS GPRS usage.
You need to hit the HangUp (red) button after finishing in these apps, then the GPRS connection drops. This has allowed my phone to last 2 days, even with pretty heavy use.
