I too thought the battery life on the SPV sucked big time, them I made a discovery.  The following document is the official docs from HTC for the phone and in my opinion is much better than the Orange one:-

If you read it carefully, you may find you are leaving the GPRS connection open which makes a huge difference.  When you enter Internet Explorer, MSN, etc you get the little G symbol in the top right over the top of the signal strength.  If you hit HOME or BACK to access other apps, THIS STAYS ACTIVE.  The manual states you only get 2 HOURS GPRS usage.

You need to hit the HangUp (red) button after finishing in these apps, then the GPRS connection drops.  This has allowed my phone to last 2 days, even with pretty heavy use.

The big G means u have access to gprs. Doesnt mean u are using it. It tells u when it is in use as a small g will appear above the signal indicator

Pardon my negativity, but is 2 days battery-life satisfactory to you guys? 16 hours ago my phone was fully charged... now it's down to 50 %. I have not used GPRS (yes, I "hung-up on it, as well) nor have I talked on the phone.  I haven't sent any sms's nor "toyed" with the phone. If this does NOT suck, then I do not know what does!

You bought the wrong phone then. Buy one without Full Color Display, GPRS connectivity, no PDA functions and as small a display as possible. Make sure it doesnt play wave files and make sure there is no real processor inside. Your battery should last you longer now. :twisted:

Aaww, come on... I do appreciate the fact that it's a computer/phone hybrid. However, I also expect a decent standby time if I don't use all the bells and whistles. The 32 hours of standby I get right now isn't exactly the 100 hours they (orange and HTC themselves) say I get. Not even close. PLEASE, don't tell me you're not dissappointed with the life of this battery.

yep i am dissapointed with the battery.  We all accept that its a hybrid phone and that there will be teething issues with it BUT when you compare its power usage to something like a nokia 9210 which has a much bigger colour display then the battery truely does suck in a major way. Im on my 7th recharge cycle now and things really should start to get better by now. Using the phone around the same ammount of time as i used my 9210 each day and the results are POOOOR!  Used to charge the nokia once every 3 days and have to charge the spv each day!!!!! Not good.

Out of interest, and for those of you that have owned Pocket Pcs, how long do your batteries last?

I know laptops i have had only last a matter of an hour or 2. Ok they are using much more power intensive tasks, such as cooling fans and hard drives etc...but is 2 days really that bad for a Hybrid Phone??

i don't have my SPV yet, still waiting for the delivery (germany seems to be very far away sometimes), so i can't say much about battery life in the moment.
but think about 2 days... it's not only a phone, it's much more and battery life depends on how you use it. i think some minutes more can be get by adjusting the settings and not using gprs all the time.
and do you own a ppc? 8+ hrs, kidding... if you are using your ppc as mp3 player how long does it run? (i know how long my loox runs...) you can switch off screen and use cf cards instead of microdrives yeah, but still no 8+ hrs.
just don't look at the spv (or any other upcomming smartphone2k2) as a normal phone... it's much more.

I dont find charging daily a problem since i usually sync it daily to my pc.

I have an ipaq and can get through a battery in less than a day no problem and the great thing about the ipaq if it discharges far enuff it wipes all my data, how handy...

go buy 6310i upto 17 days stand by (really?)

most people charge their phone nightly as par for the course even when it doesnt need it...Parents just never listen..
Try a Samsung T100 for poor battery life and thats without gprs and mp3 playback. I can kill a t100 battery in a morning....
Still "its looks nice" group of people will prob still buy it.
Ibet if the spv had nokia on it as the logo this thread wouldnt be that long.

Yes the battery life is not hot, so spend a whole 2 seconds plugging it in each eve. Infact you could have plugged it in now instead of reading this mindless drivel..

I have come from a Jandspring Treo to the SPV and find the batter a bit dissappointing... I could leave my Treo 270 connected to the GPRS network all day, make lots of calls, surf the Internet in glorious colour the lot. The only difference was a slower processor (although the unit operated much faster than the SPV) and the fact that it did not multitask... so when I switched from email to browser, the email download stopped...

My Treo battery would last for days at a time. To be fair though, the lack of standby time on the SPV is not a problem for me as I am always near power to charge it up overnight as someone else has said in an earlier message on this thread...

Its not a bad phone to use though as ita great to hold to your ear, small and comes with a cradle.... It can only get better...

I've spoken to Orange yesterday and they've kindly sent me another battery.. the battery went down to 50% overnight after charging. I got the battery this morning, really good service.
My IPAQ lasts for ages, well.. at least a couple of weeks with usage...

Hmm. i woke up this morning and my battery charge had gone down by well over 50% - three bars to one bar - 80% to about 25%...

:arrow: The battery life display on the titlebar is not that accurate - if you go setings - power management, the graph there sems to give a much clearer indication of charge remaining.
:arrow: 2 days aint that bad considering the feature set - the phone before my last - a sony J5e (now that really is a [glow=red:5a0c351760]terrible[/glow:5a0c351760] phone) - would not do 2 days even on standby - had to charge it every night
Its not nokia territory admitedly (my 6210 would often last 5 days even with some sms etc)

I'd like to get hold of another charger (and docking station if pos) + a car charger... but I can cope without...

The battery does lasts longer than 2 hours when connected to GPRS.  The time stated in the HTC document applies to continuous data transmisson, if you are not transmitting any data but still connected to GR :shock: PS it has very little impact on the battery.  I usually stays connected all day.

Spoke to Orange yesterday and they said a new battery type with much improved life should be available around January so not long to wait now  

I agree the battery life isn't great but it's heaps better than my previous phone (Samsung SGH N400) which I was lucky if it lasted 1.5 days.  I have managed to have my SPV on for 4 days without it switching off with reasonable usage so I can't complain   Guess I must be lucky or something :wink:
