Well, the Playstation 3 is due out in November 2006 as we all know... the question here is, whats better/buy an XBox now or wait to buy a PS3? Obviously a lot is at stake since both are a really pricy investment, so what do you all think??

At the end of the day, most of the games will be released simultaneously on the 360, PS3 and Revolution - and I somewhat doubt that the game developers will be bothered to recode each one to perform at optimum conditions on each platform.

Much like the PS2 and the previous XBox (which was a superior machine), the difference in the games weren't significant - well, not significant enough to warrant the average buyer to spend £200+ on the XBox.

Also bear in mind the time difference between the two releases. Maybe its gonna be November 2006, but with the worldwide release + christmas, I doubt most will get a PS3 until early 2007 much like with the 360. By then also, Microsoft would have lowered the price of the 360 due to improvements with manufacturing.

So imagine the scenario....would the average buyer pay £400+ on a PS3 (will be significantly more on ebay!) or £200 (or so) on the reduced price 360 (which will have quite a few games by then)?

I've seen videos of the PS3 in action. Just google for videos of 'the getaway 3'. It looks visually stunning!

Also the PS3 will support the next gen of high definition dvds (Blueray) straight from the box. So you're getting a couple of gadgets in one. Personally, once i've bought my car i will be squirelling away for a PS3.....the first console i will ever have bought!

I've been a big PC fan for a while now, consoles have finally caught up (especially with HDTVs....like the one i'm writing this on 8))and i can't be arsed upgrading anymore!

True...the bluray is a big plus. I'm thinking the PS3 will cost about £400-£500 anyway - but the question comes as to whether having an all in one machine will be good? Sony will have to use cheaper components, and having experienced the unreliability of the PS1 and PS2, I don't see how things will change.

Additionally, the initial rise of Bluray is going to be slow no doubt. I mean, not many will be able to pay £300-£400 for the standalone players when they first come out. I mean, is DVD->Hi Def going to be much of a huge step as VHS->DVD was? Would people be willing to pay extra for this when the (indestructible) DVDs are readily available for cheap?

If you haven't seen any high def footage yet get over to http://www.wmvhd.com/ and download some samples. Then you can decide for yourself just how big the leap is in comparison tho DVD ;) IMO it's bigger than the leap from VHS to DVD.

But like you touched upon in your post.....people will not only have to buy a new player but a new TV set too to get the advantage of HD TV. All in all a cost, i would say, of at least £1k (say £200 - £300 for a player and £800 for a HD TV)

Ohhhh and then there's HD DVD vs Bluray but that's a whole new thread on its own.....and i've dragged this off topic enough as it is! sorry ;)

Im pro 360 all the way. Im also looking foward to the Revolution. If Sony can't pull off the PS3...they're finished in the gaming industry. They gambled a little bit too much with future technology. They have even stated that the PS3 is slated to have a life of 10 years. Who the hell is gonna still be playing a PS3 in ten years? We'll be playing games in a holodeck (star trek) by then !

TOKYO--This week at Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation Meeting, company president Ken Kutaragi appeared onstage to discuss further information on the current status of the PlayStation 3, and he gave a glimpse of some new games in development.

Kutaragi started out by reconfirming that the PS3 will be backward-compatible with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games and will support high-definition TVs. "We're looking at a life cycle of 10 years with the PlayStation 3. We're currently shifting from standard TVs to HDTVs," said Kutaragi. "But in the next couple of years, most flat-panel TVs will be full HD. We're releasing the PS3 with full HD features from the start so that consumers won't have to buy another version of the console in the future. For the same reason, we're using Blu-ray as the PS3's disc format."

"I'm aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted towards households. I think everyone can still buy it if they wanted to," said Kutaragi to a mostly Japanese crowd. "But we're aiming for consumers throughout the world. So we're going to have to do our best [in containing the price]."

I had a playstation and when I first saw the PS2 I was completely underwhelmed. I ended up getting an Xbox.

Although superior in almost every way technically - the PS2 was a better console to have due to games support. Or at least until live!.

I got a 360 - mainly due to a failed Xbox and not wanting to buy a current-gen console when the new ones were on the verge of release. It is a very good console. Far from perfect but they are improving it's internal software and developers are getting better at coding for it (all consoles go through this process)

I think the PS3 will be a better console, technically, this time round but I don't think the margin will be as high as the PS2-Xbox comparison. The Cell processor is apparently revolutionary in design but Sony made exactly the same mistake with the PS2's emotion engine. Technically brilliant but no bugger knew how to program for it. Even now, at the end of it's life cycle only a fraction of games show anything close to its full potential - GT3 being the notable example.

I'm not sure about all these next gen DVD formats (at last count there are at least 5! Only Blu-ray and HD-DVD are likely to survive though). Both have similar capacities (BR is a bit higher), both cost more to make (Blu-ray a bit more expensive) and both require you to replace your TV with an inferior quality product (Sorry but I won't accept arguments on this. CRT monitors kick the ass of LCD and Plasma in terms of basic picture quality but manufacturers aren't going to release the HD CRT sets in the UK cos we all want pretty furniture) It doesn't matter which is better at the end of the day. The best format does not usually win. Betamax was better than VHS. Super-CD and DVD-Audio are better than CD. I think Sony's A-trac media format is better than MP3, and so on.

It's mainly due to Blu-ray that the PS3 isn't in production. Anyhoo - if you look at the expected life-cycle of both these consoles (which is probably about 4 years) I think the "Which format?" argument is going to be moot. Internet speeds are increasing at a rapid pace (in the lifespan of the xbox I've gone from 56kbps to 2000kbps and it is likely that I'll on on 10000Kbps by the end of the year). NTL are already trialling 24Mbps and 100Mbps connections and ADSL2+ is on trial with BT and others. In 4 years there will be a whole lot of people with enormous pipes. Also storage costs are still dropping at a massive rate (1gb SD cards for under £30 anyone?) I think optical media will be almost obsolete within 5 years.

Download video to disk or stream it at a fixed fee.

Also there is a good chance that both these formats will be superceded relatively soon by stuff like holographic media and the like.

Short answer - both consoles will be good. Both consoles will have good games. By the time the PS3 is out the 360 will be on it's second generation of games - which will hurt sony initially - but eventually they will be similar. The nintendo looks like it will be "interesting". Potentially it could be the winner but based entirely on gameplay, not immersion. I don't believe that they will port all games to all consoles this time out. The architecture of the core and powerpc mulit-core processors are far two different and it'll cost far too much to make it viable. I could be wrong and if I am you'll just get crap games. The rev won't be powerful enough to run most other next0-gen titles. According to nintendo's specs it will be about the same power as the current xbox or about double the cube.

If you have no great need for a console right now - wait till later in the year. Either the PS3 will knock your socks off or you'll be disappointed by it. Make the choice then. There will also be some top games for the 360, the price will probably drop, the HD-DVD add-on will be out to help swap your decision.

Even shorter answer - Buy a 360 - it rules!

its hard to make a judgement really until the PS3 is out and in your hands.

It could be a complete flop for all we know!

Wii, apparently. (pronounced "Weee" rather than "whyaye"

A developer for both the PS3 and the 360 said the other day that the PS3 has a bit of a processor edge but the 360's GPU is better. Overall you aren't likely to be able to tell the difference for most games.

problem with the ps3 is you will pay over the top when it comes out , and they will have the usual shortage problems to boost the interest in it , least you can buy an xbox now ;)

Both are out of my price range so I'm not bothered, unless someone would be kind enough to donate one to me ;)

Then again would I even have the time to play on it?
