When it comes to hotly anticipated software launches, this is a big one... Opera have today announced the full availability of their Pocket PC browser, Opera 8.60.

Press release from here follows, which I particularly like (as i'm quoted in it) - give it a read! :)

Aww :) Where's the Smartphone edition so I can stop using this shoddy Java Midlet version? ;)

Nicely done for getting the quote in :)

One bit of the announcement sticks out for me

The first operators to ship Windows Mobile devices with Opera Mobile™ pre-installed are T-Mobile through their Web'n'Walk offering,

Since I'm unable to find any mention of this on the T-mobile site in the web'n'walk pages I wonder if it means that this is something that T have been in discussion with Opera about and have decided to hold off releasing updated ROM's until they could incorporate opera into the build? I get a free regristration for Opera through Modaco plus anyhow, but if this is the reason that the ROM updates are a bit behind the other operators there should be no reason for them not to release an update fairly soon :)

EDIT: Even the sample phone on Opera's WM05 download page is an MDA PRO, looks promising.

Yeah. Now only if they'd listen to the community and release a Smartphone version. :)

It says right at the end of the press release that a smartphone version is coming soon, no need for an angry face (use the inpatient face instead <_< )

Excellent - been hoping for this for ages :)

I've installed the trial on my M5000 and it's looking very good.

Does anyone know if there's a util about that can convert PIE/IE faves into Opera bookmarks? I've hunted about but can only find a handful of commercial apps. I'm guessing there's no guarantee the PC versions' bookmarks are the same as the PPC bookmarks so don't want to shell out on a commercial converter...

I'm looking for the same thing... don't fancy re-adding them manually!

You should be able to just copy and paste them from the favorites folder to wherever opera keeps their bookmarks. At least thats my theory.

My bigest problem with Opera is that if I make it my default browser then clickable links in emails no longer work - does anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix? Or is it just me?

Not tried setting opera as default browser yet and prob won't if that the case :)

The bookmarks seem to be saved in a ".adr" file so no, faves don't work if you just copy them in... I've tried a freebie prog called "bookmark manager" HERE that saves in opera format but the Opera export option doesn't work with the PPC version; if you edit the file its syntax is different to faves you save in the PPC version

The Opera bookmarks are in the Application Data directory. I've copied them across a hard-reset with the beta version of Opera, this version will likely be the same.

I've been using the beta since it first came out and I'm very pleased with it. IMHO it's the best browser on the phone for full blown web browsing of "regular" sites, tho I do still use IE on a couple of sites now and then.

I never got the "default browser" thing to work either.

Nope... Opera use their own bookmark format where they store all of them into one file.

I am seeing the same thing on my MDA Vario. I had to copy & paste the web address into Opera. More work but does the job.

Hopefully Opera will find a way to fix this...

Clicking a link in an email works for me, opens opera and goes to the link without any problem, this is on an MDA PRO.

Very strange - I'm obviously not the only one with the problem. I wonder what the difference is?

What happens when you click on a link, does it just sit there, does opera open but do nothing or does opera open show the link in the title bar but just not connect? One more thing (well maybe two), is opera open in the background and have you installed in main memory or to SD? When I click Opera tends to be closed (magic button is great!) and I installed to main memory because of the problems you can get with it when installed to SD.

Good thinking!

I get an error stating that the application is not installed properly oor that something is missing. It is, like all my applications, installed on my SD card. I wonder if that is the problem?

One way to find out is to install to main memory, takes up quite a bit but if you don't put anything else in there then its just going to waste.

I've just done some digging, and found the problem when installing to Storage Card is some rogue registry entries.

I'll inform Opera, and also release a patch here myself shortly.

Incidentally, does Phone Pad behave really weird when using Opera for everyone else too?

Contacts and ie cache need all the main memory they can get - I tried the hack to get ie cache on my storage card but got all sorts of errors.

Looking forward to the patch Paul. Does Opera's cache default to main memory?

Yes it does, and I don't see a way to change it currently.

Confucious, have you tried my 'card cache' CAB file? It puts PIE cab on your Storage Card with no errors whatsoever (I always use it).

Attached, just in case.

Install it, and after rebooting, you can delete the windows\profiles directory on your device and save a TON of space.

Does it create the directories itself or do I have to do it myself before installing and rebootng?

Thanks,

I *think* it should create them itself.

To find out, install it, reboot, run IE and see if a 'Pocket IE' directory and some subdirectories appear in your storage card!
