POP3 Email - GPRS/WiFi

Hi

Just set up my POP3 email (tesco.net) using exactly the same settings as on my old M500

Used pop3.tesco.net to receive and smtp.orange.net to send

This works fine on GPRS

Then I tested it on WiFi - I can receive OK on WiFi, but when I try to send it fails (saying the email address in invalid!) - but if I change the send server to pop3.tesco.net (which is what my PC uses) then it will send OK

Has anyone else found this problem? and is there a way around it ??

Thanks

PaulF

This is becuase it doesnt go through the orange server when you are connnected via WiFi as opposed to orange GPRS, so you will need to use the same settings as you do for your pc

Hi

Just a note on SMTP and POP3:

With SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) the servers you connect to to send mail have to be the ones of the service provider for your connection. You will not be allowed to relay through the server of another network.

For example:

if you connect to BT then the outgoing server setting needs to be "smtp.bt.com"

if you connect to NTL then the outgoing server setting needs to be "smtp.ntlworld.com"

if you are on a BT connection and your outgoing mail server is "smtp.ntlworld.com" it will not work, likewise if you are an NTL connection and the setting is "smtp.bt.com"

Some providers, such as AOL use a smart proxy, they will hijack any port 25 (smtp) traffic on their network and direct it through their own smtp servers so it wil seem to the user that they are able to send through any smtp server they wish, in reality though, they are not.

The same will be similar for connections over GPRS. If you connect to orange, then the outgoing (smtp) server setting needs to be "smtp.orange.co.uk" then if you get home, connect via wifi to your BT internet connection then the setting needs to be changed to "smtp.bt.com"

The pop3 server is the incoming mailserver, this never changes. Mail sent to your pop3 account will go to the pop3 server and sit their till you connect to it and download it. You can connect to any providers pop3 server from any other network log into your account and download mail.

What you are seeing though Paul, is an actual error with the email address itself. I would expect to see that if the sender address you are using was at an invalid domain. Haveyou got any more details of the error? can you provide a screenshot?

What you should do when you add an account is in messaging go to

> Menu > Tools > New account

email address = [email protected] or whatever your email address is

click next, leave auto config to complete and click next again

Your name = When people get a mail from you it will be shown as "from" this so whatever you like

username = your email account username, usually the full email address

password = your password

Check the remember password box if you dont want to enter it everytime you pick up email.

Click next

Account type = pop3

Name = whatever you want the account to be listed as under your settings.

Click next

Incoming mail = pop3.tesco.net

Outgoing Mail = pop3.tesco.net / smtp.tesco.net or smtp.orange.net

Domain = LEAVE BLANK!

Click finish.

This account should now work fine. If you need to change connection from orange GPRS and Tesco broadband then go into messages and:

Menu > Tools > Options

Click the account you created

Click next 3 times till you come to the "server information section" and change the Outgoing mail to smtp.orange.net for gprs or pop3.tesco.net for your WiFi and leave the domain bit BLANK.

Hope this helps, if not, let me know.

Thanks guys

I guess I could set up two POP3 accounts for my tesco account, one with each send server setup, then I could just choose the correct one for how I'm connected.....

I'll probably go over to orange broadband soon at home, which I guess will resolve the problem anyway....

Thanks for the advice

There is exceptions to the above, there are some authenticated smtp servers, i have some mail accounts on authenticated servers, which means my mail will be relayed regarless of connection, email address, so long as the username and passwd match - this is what i do

another simple option is to create to pop accounts on your device, same pop settings but with different smtp settings, then send using the account that uses the smtp address of your connection

I'm a bit new at this sort of thing, but when you say enter

smtp.tesco.net/smtp.orange.net

do you mean type in exactly as above or do you mean type in say smtp/tesco.net if you want to use WiFi, and only smtp.orange.net if you want to use GPRS?

I am sure when I first set up my phone it would send & get emails using both GPRS & WiFi with out changing accounts, unfortunately I had to do a hard reset and lost all the settings I had and I can't seem to get it back to its previous state.

Thanks for any info.

moko thats exactly right. I cant see how it did work before unless it actually connected via GPRS but you thought it was WiFi.

I too was having the exact same initial problem and I design email infrastructures for a living and I totally forgot I was connecint via wifi so couldnt send to vodafones SMTP... DOH!

You would need to change the outgoing smtp each time you send and recieve or setup another account with the exact same details with the exception of the SMTP. So you use whichever account is relavant to your connection status.
