Orange SPV M3100 Fault?

I've had my Orange SPV M3100 for about two months now but in the last week or so it's developed any annoying fault - at least I think it's a fault...

Randomly, and after using the phone successfully for some time I pick it up to find No Service in the display instead of Orange. If I take the SIM and put it in another phone straight away I find full or near full service? If I then put it back in the M3100, rebooting, there's still No Service.

However if I wait a while, and I haven't established yet how short a while can be, but usually it's an hour or two, I get service again! The phone can then work for a day or two normally but sometimes I can't even get 24 hours out of it...

Once I was using the phone just before I went to bed, picked it up when I awoke 6 hours later and No Service. Again SIM straight into another phone and all was well so it can't be the signal - must be the phone.

Anyone else experienced similar before I traipse back the Orange shop??

TIA

Have you tried changing the phone from auto network selection to manual?

I had similar problems with the O2 network on an MDA III

See here

Thanks Mike - I've changed that and I'll see how long it lasts. Most time it shows No Service after about 24 hours so i'll report back tomorrow :-)

Try it on 2g (phone settings, band, GSM) - it may be either a weak 3G signal or a dodgy cell thats crashing and rebooting every few hours.

i'll give that a try if i need to after Mike's suggestion... However I travel around a fair bit and this doesn't always happen in the same location. Also I can always get a signal immediately by transferring the SIM into another handset. Transferring it straight back doesn't work... I've always to wait some time 1+ hour minimum before getting a signal back on the SPV M3100.

well that didn't last long!! No Service after about 30 mins of use. :-( Not sure if it's connected but i was using wifi and went back to gprs and it showed Orange for just a second or two before going to No Service.

i've discovered that if i do a hard reset i can get it to work again straight away but a day or two later it goes back to No Service. Funny thing is just now it seems to happen overnight when I'm asleep.

I tried to log it faulty on service.hteurope.com but when i get to the symptoms page it won't let me select a symptom. Gonna phone them in the morning

after owning an orange M3100 for about 6 weeks, overnight my phone is now showing "out of service" and i can't get this back even resetting it (both ways). I have rung Orange but they have said that they will ring me back!!. My Sim works in my old Sony phone so it's the phone i suppose. Any further ways of solving the issue would be great.

so familiar Ken! :-) Even down to i too put my sim in and old SE phone to remain mobile...

i've had my SPV M3100 since September, worked fine until just b4 Christmas. I bought mine on ebay so have no receipt. Seller sold it as an 'unwanted upgrade' and is now no longer registered on ebay so i can't get any receipt or proof of purchase... Orange don't want to know. Trying to get HTC to look at it.

In the mean time tho a hard reset works 4 me, but defeats the point of having a pda mobile! :-)

I've had my Vario II a few days now. I was at work this morning where T-Mob signal is poor GPRS at best and often no signal at all.

I occasionally move to my 'hot-spot' where I know I can at least get a half decent GPRS signal to check messages, but today, no dice. I left work when I usually pick up a 'fair' 3G signal, no dice. I travelled home, still nothing.

I rebooted it to find loads of 3G and a dozen messages waiting. A similar issue I wonder?

I too have had similar problems whereby for no reason? the signal goes and no operator can be set.

The problem IMO and the answer that has fixed BOTH of the phones I have had problems with is simple.....

The phones had a problem whilst being originally flashed with the OS rom. Its to do with something called POOM?

Anyway...after putting both phones into bootloader mode and re flashing them with rom images....BINGO

Its worth it but only if you have access to the correct rom to avoid waranty issues.....and only a reasonable solution should Orange leave you to die.

It worked for me and I am simply sharing my answer.

I have had a similar problem intermittantly on my Vario II. I think it relates to when it loses its signal it doesn't re-register itself on the network. I only think this as the times it has happened to me seem to relate to when I go through a tunnel or get in a lift, although it is not consistent and has only happened a handful of times over 6 months. Sometimes turning off and on again has sorted it, at least once it persisted for a few hours. I then assumed it to be a network problem?

I've found that disabling then re-enabling Phone in Comms Manager has the same effect, and is a little quicker but it's still a bit of a pain...

I sent my phone back to HTC for repair yesterday. I'll let you know how I get on in a fews days time...

Malcolm

sniff... still no sign of my M3100 and i'm missing it dreadfully! :)

HTC's excellent tracking service on their web site shows it arriving with them on Monday and finally making it to the repair bench on Wednesday at 16:44 and REPAIRED at 17:40. But since then no update. :D

Hi

I am having a similar problem at the moment but with a few subtle differences. My phone shows me as having full 3G signal (in areas where I have had no problems since getting my M3100 in September), but it now will not let me make or receive calls. I reported this to Orange who eventually sent me a replacement handset.

However, I still have the same problems. The only fix is for me to put the phone into 2G (GSM) rather than 3G. If I do this I have no problems making/receiving calls.... but it does defeat the object of having a 3G phone.

Could it be a problem with the SIM card?

or could it be that I did a SPB restore on the new handset (could this have re-activated the problem on the new handset?).

I would be willing to try a hard reset, but have the problem that I can't currently sync my contacts with Activesync (see my other post in this forum). Is there any other way of syncing/backing up contacts?

Thanks

I believe this is a network problem with orange.

Myself and about 10 other people i work with are having the exact same problems.

A few of us have m3100's and the rest are m5000's.

My cousin who lives in a different city is having the same problem with his 3100.

I spoke to orange about it last week and they said they were having network problems in my area and it would be fixed by friday. Still having the same problems now.

Bizzare

/relurks :)

Sounds plausible knowing Orange...... but when I called them they said everything was fine in my area?!?!

Also I am having the same problems at work and at home (which are about 10 miles apart).

3g nets are notoriously flaky. O readily admit that their 3G service has issues. Usually switching the phone to GSM means you can at least use it.

I had a recurring service problem for the first couple of months that I owned the phone - the cell nearest my house would crash a few times a day and I would show no service. Seems they have fixed it now though...

you guys are not filling with confidence! :)

anyway still no sign of my phone. Today at 10:40 it changed FT_PASS. I'm guessing (hoping) that means Final Test Pass(?). Hopefully the next status tomorrow might be "Posted Back". :D

This is really weird.

It seems that the only time I can't make or receive calls on 3G network is when I am indoors. This is at various locations where I have never previously had a problem. The phone shows full 3G signal in all these areas.

When I was travelling into work this morning I had no problems at all but then as soon as I got within 6feet of the office I tried to make a call and...... nothing....... yet when I walked a few feet back..... no problem again!!

I really don't understand.

Could it be that the phone is having trouble choosing which cell to associate with when too many are on offer?

Sorry.... my technical knowledge does not extend that far!

But another development.....

I just asked a colleague of mine at work if I could borrow his 3G handset to try my SIM in.... and guess what.... he says that his phone hasn't been working for the last few days.... exactly the same problems as me..... and when I put it into 2G mode.... worked fine....

We then figures out that it has been problematic since last weeks bad weather.

So therefore there MUST be a problem with the network..... but Orange won't acknowledge this..... anyone know a way of getting through to them?
