‘ Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key’.

Can anyone help prevent me from going completely crazy ? I have just bought a Vario II and like others in this forum , I have encountered difficulties trying to configure it for use as a modem. When I bought it I was told it was simplicity itself to set up but since then it has turned into a total nightmare.

The Vario II was bought from T-Mobile as a replacement for my MDA Mini S which was on the O2 Network and was an earlier version without the capacity to be an effective modem.

I have been trying to connect the phone using the USB cable to my Dell Latitude D410.

To date I have changed the set up discs , spoken to T-Mobile technical support 3 times, tried to link to non-Dell desk top computers and called in a computer buff to assist me… all to no avail.

I have installed active sync on the laptop from the ‘Getting started’ CD and selected USB link from the phone’s drop down menu before pressing start. Once this has been done successfully, I have connected the Vario using the USB modem cable .

This results in a bleep and an indication that the new HTC Modem hardware has been found and brings up the New Hardware wizard. This asks you to select either the recommended automatic installation or the installation from a specific location .I have tried both approaches and in each case it indicates that it is searching for the HTC Modem USB. This is followed by the caution that the software has not been certified for Windows XP and continue anyway is selected. The software sets a system restore point before attempting to load C/windows/system32/drivers. This is immediately followed by a beep and a task box stating ‘ Windows was unable to install the modem’. When the OK button is pressed this completes the Wizard and provides an error message

‘ Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key’.

No one I have spoken to seems to have a clue what this means !!

When I have checked the Device Manager in the Control Panel it shows that the HTC USB Modem displayed together with a Yellow circled exclamation mark indicating a problem. Clicking this shows either’ Drivers for this device are not installed (Error 28) or that the Modem is working correctly but has been disabled. When the modem has been ‘enabled’ it has returned to a disabled state with the explanation that this could be because of a resource issue or possible conflict.

Any advice would be gratefully received even if the suggestion is to give up and exchange it for a two tins and a piece of string !!

Thanks
