Very Strange behaviour

Ive had my compact 3 on tmobile for about 4 months now and up until two days ago was extremely happy with it. However, 2 days ago something started going wrong. All of a sudden the screen became totaly unresponsive, couldnt click a thing. A soft reset later and still the same problem. Remove the battery and I got normal funtionality for a few mins. But then, when trying to type something out in a word document, the screen froze again. Trying to then scroll up and down the document (after it unfroze a couple of mins later) I could scroll down holding the bar on the right using the stylus, but as soon as I let go, it would scroll back up. Trying to enter text on the keypad made the scroll bar flicker up and down. Another battery out of the device, reboot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Right at this minute its working fine, but an hour ago it was all over the place. I have installed a good deal of freeware on the device, but nothing new at all for at least 2 months.

I am contemplating a hard reboot, though am not overly keen

Ive just backed up with sprite backup but to be honest im not even sure what the backup contains, or if I can isolate bits of it. Ie, all I desperatly need are the contacts, I figure ive had the device long enough now to know what I want and what I dont, so I can just put that stuff back on.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My first guess is that you have installed all that freeware onto the device rather than the storage card. You need to leave a fair bit of memory on the phone for applications to run.

I don't think you can extract particular bits from a Sprite backup and of course you don't want to restore a dodgy recent setup anyway. If you're only worried about Contacts then you should already have them synced with Outlook on your PC.

One off the wall thought!

Do you have a screen protector installed? If so it may be worth removing it, and see if it has any effect. Occasionally, a screen protector can become a little tight at one of the corners or edges, exerting pressure on the screen to cause freezes.

This is happening to a lot of people, no word on if it's a software glitch or hardware but hardware defect is looking more likely at the moment.

Anyways, check this out and pass it along to anyone else experiencing this problem.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Disco Stu, pretty much everything is installed onto the storage card. after an initial boot I have approx 23MB of Free Mem. Unfortunatly I dont have my contacts synced with outlook, for 2 reasons. Number 1 is that I use linux as my OS on the desktop, so if I need to connect to a windows puter, its my mums. And the second is that I dislike outlook intensely. Currently looking for a solution, thinking maybe evolution under linux. I take the point though. Dont spose there is another way to backup contacts, is there?

Neil, thats a possibility. I have got a screen protector that did get scatched recently, could well be that the scratch is causing the problem. I was contemplating getting a new one on here anyway, this might be an incentive to do so. No idea if that is the problem, but il try it

shoey, thats for a different device, though it wouldnt suprise me if they share componants

Thanks for the replies guys
