Can Dash boot splash screen be changed?

On other smartphones, one can use tools to go in and read or update the splash screen in the rom. This errors when you try to do it on the Dash, in my experience. I believe this is because the image is 320x240 instead of 240x320.

Has anyone been able to update the bootup splash screen, to replace the t-mobile image with the HTC logo, or some other graphic?

The other images during bootup and shutdown are easily changed and well documented. I like to have these screens display a message like: This phone belongs to Dana, if lost, please call [my alternate contact numbers].

Plus, I just don't like the pink and grey tmobile branding... Makes my phone look like the Victoria's Secret edition Excalibur.

Emailed you an image last week, but never got a response...

So, can you please just explain how it's possible to change the boot screen?

How to change the T-Mobile Start-up and Shut-off animations/images/Sounds.

You can change the startup and shutdown screens on your Dash. You can also change the "T-Mobile" logo when you are looking through your call history.

  • Startup/Shutdown
    • Navigate to \Windows\ and copy "TMO startup.gif" and "TMO shutdown.gif" somewhere to your PC for backup purposes.
    • At this point, you can replace those two files with images of your choice as long as they are the exact same filename and 320x240
      • If you don't want to use GIF files (e.g. you want to use JPG, PNG etc) you'll have to go edit the registry. Change the respective values in HKLM\System\Startup and HKLM\System\Shutdown to the paths of the files you want to use

    T-Mobile logo in call history

[*] Navigate to \Windows\ and copy "BrandingBox.gif" to your PC for backup

[*] Replace this file with the GIF image of your choice. The image must be 320x27

This is interesting.. I'm running Vista with the "Mobile device center", when I go to view my files via this activesync replacement, it doesn't let me see the \windows\ directory. It is cloaking several other directories.. Anyone know how to make the \windows\ directory viewable?

No, I have not figured it out yet. I have WM6 now, and I am unlocked, but I still don't think it's possible. To do it on WM5, on the Typhoon and Tornado models, you had to use tools to go in and replace the splash screen, but that does not work with the landscape screen. I'm sure there is a way, but someone would need to create a tool, or an install package, to pull it off.

I think some of the responders are confusing the bootup splash screen with the startup and shutdown screens, which are easily changed.

TMO startup and shutdown.gif cannot be deleted, renamed, or moved from \Windows. Even with an app unlock (if you're able to, let me know how!).

I used the above-quoted method. Just use the GIMP, Photoshop, or whatever and create a 320x240 .gif or .jpg. I used jpegs cuz I'm cool like that. This worked just fine. Just drop the .jpg files into \Windows (place somewhere on phone and use file explorer to move them to \Windows). Once you have them in there just update

HKey_Local_Machine\System\Startup and HKey_Local_Machine\System\Shutdown (keys are located in '2' subfolder)

to point at the new images.

I do not think there is a need to update \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\SystemStart\ or \SystemShutdown\ to reflect the new screens but I did anyway. Also \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\SystemStart\ is where I pointed the registry to a different startup sound and that worked out.

BTW

If anyone has figured out how to get the \Windows and other hidden directories to show up when file viewing from a PC please post here or link a related thread!
