Hermes Drowned in Water! Help!

I won't beat about the bush, but my phone fell down the loo today, was rapidly plucked out and dried...

All parts, back, battery, sim card, memory put on kitchen towel to dry out, along with the phone in an "open setting".

Now... I left it for 8 hours before trying it 5 mins ago.

The screen is a bit watery still with some funny marks in, the screen goes white and the phone vibrates 3 separrate short times before appearing dead.

1) What's the best advice on its recovery? I'm goign to leave it overnight to dry but what else?

2) I took out the t-mobile insurance offered in-house... Can i walk into the shop tomorrow and get a new one? I have all paperwork etc. Or do I need to give it longer to dry out before claiming? I love the phone and am really sad it met such a demise, but rely on it to keep me organised

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

A slightly worried silly me!

Woops!

There was an article run on "The Gadget Show" a little while ago where they deliberately dunked several mobiles in a pond and then dried them out. It seems the best way to do it is with extensive low level heat from a tungsten lamp. They used an angle-poise desk lamp pointing down at the moby for over 24hrs from about 18 inches away. They had mixed success, but apparently the secret was to disassemhble the phone into as many parts as possible and resist the urge to 'test it' until it was absolutely, completely, utterly dry (oops).

As far as the T-Mobile insurance goes, I've not yet had to test mine, but it seems pretty comprehensive and I'm as sure as I can be (without reading the policy - I'm at work) that "accidental damage" is covered. They will insist on sending it for a repair assessment and should provide a loan-phone while its away. If they decide to replace it, it will be a brand new one, rather than a refurb like Orange Care supply.

Good luck

Cheers PD Ryder. I do feel v. silly! I'll see what I can rig up tonight to give this a few hours to dry out thoroughly... If it's no better in the morning, I'll read the small print of the contract and I guess wonder into the local store, look a bit pathetic and see what they can do. Oh I am such a silly billy aren't I! Good thing I had everything backed up recently (past few days)...

Your support is much appreciated

I'd say go for the insurance straight away.

The problem with drying out, even after immersion in 'clean' water is that some of the mobo 'tracks' can become damaged by microdeposits found in any non-pure water; this will mean the device becomes unreliable risking data loss.

If your mission is 'non critical' you could just see how it goes, and if it starts playing up again, it might just fall in the water again, allowing you to honestly claim for recent damage under the insurance!

I'll give this a go then - and report back.

Secondly, if I stick my sim card into another persons' phone, will I bea able to pick up missing text messages adn so on. which have been sent to me on my number? I hope it's not a dumb question?! but i've never been in this predicament before

Cheers

These things happen, claim of your insurance and let us know how it goes.

Your texts will come through if u put your SIM in another phone so you should be OK (It must be a T-Mob or unlocked one tho!)

Good luck!

Not bad at all!

Rang the insurance company used via t-mobile phonesafe;) or something like that.

I explained my situation, they said after about just a few minutes of taking details that the claim was authorised, and that they'd email the local t-mobile branch, so I could go in and replace it. So I rang t-mobile to confirm they had some vario 2's in stock...

Nipped into town, showed relevant paperwork as proof, paid my £25 surcharge and here I am.

Just over an hour between ringing the company (9ish), getting it confirmed (9.05), then the shop opening at 10. At 10:10 I got my new phone (a straight swap, literally just unit and battery from a new phone).

Now I'm sitting here, pleased as punch I had insurance and am updating and restoring my phone to its previous glory.

By the way, they didn't ask if it had WM6 on, which mine has had for several months..

Thanks for your concern and I'll happily answer any qns you have.

Silly me!

Sounds a good service. O don't do swaps in their shops as O Retail is a different company but otherwise their cover is as good.

Any one without insurance dunks their phone, the secret apparently is to thoroughly wash it in distilled water (to avoid mineral deposits (as previous poster said) shorting contacts on the circuitboards etc) and then chuck it in the airing cupboard for 48 hours.

Always a concern when flashed with a warranty invalidating ROM........at least it was totally dead though! Can you tell me what the build number of the phone is and what ROM version it is supplied with? Thinking of swapping mine out for an occasional screen alignment issue next time it shows up, I fancy a new phone.

Ach well, never mind. I may just take the plunge and swap it out anyway. My screen protector is starting to look permanently dirty so I might just get a new phone to apply a new one to.

A tip for anybody with insurance from Endsleigh... (students take note!)

I first arranged insurance for my XDA 2i which I got the same year I started Uni. As it was a PDA device, they classed it as primarily a computing device, and so it falls under the computing category - and instead of their much more expensive £5 a month insurance, I had it insured for ~£25.

When I got my Vario 2 (and rearranged my insurance for my new accommodation, as I moved out of student halls) I told them I'd ditched the Alpine and gotten the Hermes - the bloke was a little confused when I said it was a phone, but I just assured him that it's a personal computing device which I primarily use for that purpose (which I do, no lies there) and it just happens to have phone capability as well. Bingo, once again, got my phone insured for much cheaper - circa £25 mark instead of the extortionate monthly payments that mobile providers like to make you sign up to.

Fortunately not had to test this insurance yet, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't cover my handset. My insurance covers any accidental damage caused by a third party or myself - when I dropped my MP3 player (listed as a specific item on the policy) I had a no-fuss cheque in the post to cover the cost of buying a replacement unit about two weeks after I sent the old one off to their repairs company.

Anyway, this might help anybody else who's looking to do a bit of money saving whilst getting their smartphone insured.

Don't forget there's a difference between 'warranty' and 'insurance'. Having a T-Mob ROM on your phone would not have kept it out of the loo!

I guess thats Contents Insurance with an 'all risks' clause (ie out of the house not just in it) with the PPC named as a specific device. £25/year should cover it

When I lost my C500 a couple of years ago I just claimed off my contents insurance - it wasn't specified and they paid up £300 + the price of the memory card less thye excess.

The only slight downer on using your Contents policy is [a] the number of times you might need to claim, and there's no direct replacement / no overnight delivery of a new 'un / no loan-phone / the time taken for the claim to be processed

well if your a person that tends to loose/damage a phone a month then it might not be the best way, how ever its a lot cheaper for that one off time you do loose/break it than getting Phone cover at about £8 a month

there's no direct replacement / no overnight delivery of a new 'un / no loan-phone / the time taken for the claim to be processed

true but better than a kick in the teeth, and if you like me and still keep some of your older phones then you just need to wait for a new sim card and it will keep you going till the cash for a replacement arrives
