WM6 Skin

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked and answered elsewhere in this forum (although couldn't find a specific post myself).

I've thinking of getting the M700 (had got the Nokia N95 on upgrade, and was shocked by how poor the Symbian OS was compared to WM, which I had been enjoying for the past few years), and I know that it runs WM5.

However, I do like the shiny look of WM6, and was wondering if anyone knew where I could download a skin for the M700 that would make it look like WM5.

Other than that is this a handset that forum members would recommend? I thought about the E650 (which I know runs WM6), but wasn't too taken by the styling of it. All my previous smartphones have been of the candybar variety (E200, C500, C600), so the move to the M700 would be a major shift for me (especially as it has no keys!!).

Many thanks for any advice on this!!

You can actually go one better than that and actually install the WM6 OS on the M700, that's what I have done. It's been installed for about a week now and so far has been excellent.

The WM6 platform is somewhat smoother than WM5 and has added features. A2DP is improved as well (At least in the way I use it)

People have reported problems with video calling in that the recipients’ image is rotated by 45-90 degrees on the screen amongst other minor bugs but none that effect me and I don’t know anyone else with video call facilities.

The rom is available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=359 and there are a choice of two different ones (I’m using mun-rus)

A word of warning though, INSTALLING THESE ROMS WILL INVALIDATE YOUR WARRANTY.

The choice is yours.

Like you I went from the SPV to the E200, C500 and C550. At the time I could never see myself going back to a Nokia or any other non WM based device. I then went from the C550 to the M600 (M700 predecessor) Now I have the M700 and I would never go back to a smartphone.

The only gripe I have about the M700 is that it doesn’t have an FM radio :P but if that’s all I can complain about it must be pretty good.

Hi Robbied,

Thanks for the information. I had heard about updating the OS to WM6 on the Xda forum, but it sounded a little scary. I completely understand that it invalidates your warranty, but what potentially are the risks of installing this? Your's was thankfully successful, but is there a high risk of ending up with a dead device?

Also, in terms of software compatibility, are there any significant differences between WM5 and WM6?

You also mentioned A2DP support. I had been thinking about the potential of using the M700 as an MP3 player, and replacing my rather creaky minidisc walkman. (This is one of the few areas that the N95 really is impressive, especially with the clip-on remote control to skip through tracks and adjust volume). Is this feasible using the M700 and a decent stereo Bluetooth headset.#

Good to hear that you've been so happy with this, and the M600 before it. Was it very difficult to adapt to the lack of physical keys? I guess navigating through the menus must be a doddle using the jog-dial and selection buttons, but is texting relatively intuitive?

Two final, quick questions:

Does the Wi-Fi work well? The N95 was hopeless, and kept disconnecting whenever you tried moving from one web page to another... this is what computers have become, my a***!!

And, do you have the black or white version. I've only ever seen the white dummy model in the shops, but I'm feeling inclined towards the black one (which I know is for business cutomers only). I understand the relative merits of the two, but I was wondering if you might have any comments on this.

Thanks again for your advice!!

Wifi is fantastic on the M700 - no problems at all (at least from my M700).

Sound is great for MP3, though you may have to install some CAB files to fix the non-existant bass

(search for "bass" on Modaco and you will find the fix).

This is actually the first non official rom that i have ever installed but I've read alot on the forums about people bricking devices. The developers on these sites now created the roms in such a way that it is virtually impossible to brick a device anymore. That is not to say that it will not happen to you but the sheer amount of people that have successfully installed a Trinity WM6 rom speaks for itself.

Everything that I had installed on WM5 is now installed on WM6 with no compatibility issues.

For A2DP, I use mine in conjunction with my bluetooth car stereo with good results (finally), I've never used a headset or headphones so I can't really comment. There is plenty of information about this on the forums and I think it depends on which model you choose.

Texting is a bit of a pain but I don't send a lot of texts. There is various phonepad software that you can install but I've never found one that I can get on with.

Wifi works a treat.

I have the white one and love it. No flakey paint and a bit of an ipod feel about it. I haven't managed to scratch it yet, whether thats a testament to it's durability or I've just been lucky...I guess time will tell.

Thanks both of you guys... have pretty much convinced me to get this phone. Called Orange this evening and now have a lovely white M700 winging it's way to me. I had really wanted the black one, but they said that this wasn't available any more, and is unlikely to be in the future. They said something about it not being stocked any more, as the white was so popular... sounds a little dubious, but a lot of people of said that the white one does actually look a little better than the white one, so I should be happy with this.

Will give serious thought to flashing the ROM to WM6 once I get this.

Thanks again for your advice... much appreciated!!

Just to let you know, I've flashed with the WM6 ROM and I've had no problems except that it wouldn't flash with activesync 4.5 for some reason. The actual ROM is great though, much faster actually.

Not at the moment,

HTC recently released WM6 updates for a few of handsets, but the Trinity wasn't one of them, much to many peoples dissapointment as the Trinity is a very capable device and posibly more deserving of it than, for example, the Herald with its slower processor.

But theres always hope...

Neither is 'Better' they are just different implementations of the same thing.

Mun_Rus TE ROM uses the current, release version of the P3300 WM6 ROM and is very stable. It contains the new Office Mobile apps including OneNote; I think the LSVW ROM still uses the original Office apps. I believe there is a ROM somewhere using the Dopod WM6 P3600 Test vesion, but its not generally available. HTC and Orange have said they will NOT offer a ROM update for the P3600.

You need to rmember that these are both 'works in progress' and though probably better now than the current release WM5 ROMs, still have a few glitches. Technically they will also invalidate your warranty, but as far as I know, no-one has been penalised for this, and the Telco's still replace devices with hardware faults.

I'm personally using the Mun-Rus ROM as it offers 64MB of free storage memory after a hard reset. It has a very stable WiFi and GPS system, and is fast in operation. It does omit a few things to save memory- Voice Dial, Windows Live, VOIP and Transcriber, etc, but these are all installable via cab files if needed.

Look in the sites cited above before playing, but give it a try if your device isn't 'mission critical' !

I would like to obtain the standard Orange ROM for the M700 before attempting this. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
