I thought it would be the best option for me as I want a device which is relatively small and has MS Office to view files as well as Wi-Fi. Although the new HTC S710 has also caught my eye what with it being like a normal Mobile phone with a numeric keypad. Anyhow, the XDA Mini S (which I believe is the same as a Qtek 9100, MDA Vario, etc...?) seems to be very slow responding to touchscreen actions. Is this a common problem?? Maybe it might be the O2 rom that is installed on there? What are the Vario, Qtek models like? I think the Custom Desktop screen is a good idea in order to cut down use of the touchscreen and use the navigational buttons to navigate around the screen, however I want to add a shortcut to Text Messaging but I don't know how?? That goes away if you overclock it with omap clock or BatteryStatus to about 240 or so. Here's how to create a txt msg link: New, blank message: 99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "SMS" -to "" -body "" Just copy that line and paste it into notepad. click on save and when the box comes up to save it, name it txtmsg.lnk and change the "Save as Type" to All Files. I'm really interested in buying the phone now... this slow response time is really putting me off though. I presume the T-Mobile software is set out pretty similar to the O2 one?? Guest xeno1 Posted May 25, 2007 Report Share Posted May 25, 2007 I actually overclock mine at 247 mhz and I've been doing it for about 6 months now and haven't had a problem and from everything that I've read that's a pretty safe speed. There's also a very noticeable difference in the speed of pretty much everything at that speed. I don't think I'd go too much above that. As for your question about the ROM, yes you can change it but I'm not going to say it's easy and if you don't know what you're doing you can ruin your phone for good. If that's what you want to do though I suggest you go xda-developers website and read everything they have to say about how to do it and then when you're done, read it again about 4 more times and make sure you know exactly what you're doing. While you're doing that learn how to customize your phone with the ROM that's already on it. Learn all you can before you decide to go and do something that could kill your phone altogether and then if you run in to problems if you do decide to upgrade your ROM you'll at least have an idea of how to fix it. Most will be in Personal mode which adds a few O2 specific things to the home screen, and startup sequence. Corporate mode runs quite a bit faster, though omits the auto setup of internet connections, and a few other non-essential bits & bobs. You do need to hard reset to access changing mode (there is a software shortcut, but it doesn't do enough if you are already in personal mode). During the hard reset process you will see a menu asking which mode you want. It defaults to Personal after 5 seconds so you need to be quick to select Corporate. You will then be asked for a password, which is 0506 Once started, the device ought to be much more responsive, and you can then go about configuring the various settings. Thanks, will try that option... I've been doing a bit of swotting and read that there is a BASIC mode also?? How do I access this?? The websites I've been on tell you these things are available but don't tell you how to access them!! Despite my post above, I now think they dropped Personal with the advent of the MiniS, because it included the O2 Today theme which sucked memory and resources, slowing the device to a crawl. So. the hard reset options are, I think, Basic and Corporate. I'd still go 'Corporate'; if the MiniS in question was an early model, it probably has the original O2 ROM which was very slow. O2 offered an iupdated ROM via their my-xda website, so that may be worth applying. Sorry if this is a bit uncertain- I sold my MiniS 1 year ago, so am working from memory! Do you know what, I think you might be right!!! The ROM I've got on this device is... 1.5.4.2!!! Just been on the XDA website and they have got a 2.21.4.101 ROM availabel for download!! So I will download that when I get back tonight, I've got the instructions on how to do it so I will give that a go later, hopefully shouldn't be too bad or complicated to do!! Guest mandt Posted May 25, 2007 Report Share Posted May 25, 2007 One thing to add is that before you even think about changing the ROM make sure you know if you have a G3 or a G4 model soft reset the phone and look at the numbers that appear on screen when it's booting up, G4 models have an IPL ad SPL ending in .0001. If this is the case then make sure you do plenty of reading at XDA-Developers. DO NOT TRY TO FLASH A G4 DEVICE WITH A G3 ROM, YOU WILL KILL IT! The ROM 1.5.4.* was only supplied on the original model. I sold the MiniS because I moved house to a non-O2 location (the only signal I can get is Orange), plus I'm a dabbler, and wanted to try the FS N560. That's now gone in favour of an Orange SPV M700. The MiniS is still going strong though, in the hands of one of my 4WinMobile colleagues! Yes- I did run TomTom 5 on my MiniS using a BT GPS Receiver. No problems as far as I can recall. Don't suppose I could get TOMTOM off you could I :rolleyes: In quest of speeding my device up... I downloaded the latest ROM (v2.21.4.101) from the XDA website and tried to install using VISTA. I didn't have Activesync on my machine so downloaded v4.1 and tried to install, Vista didn't like it and suggested Windows Mobile Device Center. So got that, and went ahead with my ROM upgrade... All was going fine, the phone turned off and went to the 3 colour screen but then on the PC it come up with ERROR!! This is when I started bricking myself, more so than the phone at this stage!! Luckily the ROM guide had a recovery guide and I'm back on with the phone now. Question is... How can I upgrade my ROM?? Does WMDC not have the right drivers or something?? Can I use a different ROM maybe?? Say a WM6 ROM? Please help!! This old ROM with the O2 software is doing my head in... its so slow!!! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest mandt Posted May 26, 2007 Report Share Posted May 26, 2007 Neil5459 is right, a genuine O2 ROM won't be a problem. the advice I gave was if you are planning to flash a custom ROM, which I think is what you are leaning towards as you are asking about WM6. RUUs on Vista is another matter, there is a post about it >HERE<. Usually when a ROM update fails you can simply run it again while the device is in the bootloader (Three coloured screen) and it should take. again read plenty at xda devs, theres not much the guys over there don't know about upgrading ROMs Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

TomTom use a rigorous licensing/activation model that restricts the number of activations allowed. I've used all my available ones for TTN5 and TTN6 :P Good luck with the ROM update. As Mandt says, there are some issues with Vista, but you should be able to work around it. If not, borrow someone's XP PC, install ActiveSync, and connect as a Guest. The ROM update should work, as A/S is only used to put the MiniS into bootloader mode; after that A/S aborts anyway and the connection continues as a generic USB connection. Got the new O2 ROM onto my Mini S, used that Vista workaround and it went on fine after initially I thought I'd buggered my phone on the first attempt!! Don't think I'll bother with a custom WM6 ROM now, the phone is running much faster without the O2 software on it, also I've installed some other Apps that make the phone a lot easier to use, thanks for all your help guys :rolleyes: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
