Merging Live Contacts

So I fired up Live Messenger, and it pulled in all my contacts, but didn't merge some. So now I have a messenger contact and an "outlook" contact, and I can't figure out how to merge them. I tried setting the IM address in Outlook, and resyncing, but that didn't do it.

Anyone have any bright ideas?

do you mean the ones on the phone are not showing in WLM as that does not happen what should happen is in you phone contacts you will have two type of contact denoted by two distinctly different pictures one is your contacts on you do not have in WML and the other are contacts you do have in WLm.

hope that helps you. to add contact to WLM select a contact in the contacts view hit menu and select add to Windows Live Messanger

Nope, I have duplicate contacts, WLM and non-WLM for the same person.

So I can configure the non-WLM contact to have the IM address, then delete the WM contact, and add the non WLM one?

thats cos the information stored is different, just consolidate the information to make just one single contact by either editing the c WLM contact or the Phone contact both can be done via the phone after the first synch...then delete all the ones that are not needed.

the WLM contact will be updated to WLM next time you sign in and both WLM and phone contacts will synch to outlook next time you use active synch or the vista equivalent.

Ah what a pain. I tried updating the "normal" contact and it didn't work, so still dupes. Oh well!

what i did was synch my WLM contacts to my phone then i deleted the contacts from my WLM via the PC. I then synched the contacts to my desktop with active synch, i then edit all duplicates to ensure they had all the same information stored in each.

I then synched again. then i deleted all the ones that where marked as WLM contacts so all now showed up as outlook contacts. i then sychned to out look for a third time which left me with just a list of outlook contacts some of which where in my WLM, I then synched to WLM andnoticed none of my contacts synched with it, so i went through my list of contacts one at a time and chose which ones I wanted in WLM (contacts>"highlight contact">menu>add to WLM) you can add every one or just a select few then re synch to WLM first then to outlook.

pain in the ass I know but I had all my contacts as i wanted them. just a shame you can not sort them to show outlook contact and WML contacts seperatly, they end up intermingled.

I hope youu get them how you want them eventually

Yeah had to do the same.

Also found that deleting the WLM contacts from outlook then doing the various syncs that they would actually be removed from my messenger buddies as well.

Fun and games!

All sorted now tho!

Well I don't get the WLM contacts into outlook for some reason, and the last thing I need is people vanishing off messenger. Oh well, I'll leave it!

they don't vanish you just put them in a holding pattern until you collate the details to make one entry per contact so you dont have duplicates to be fair I would have thought Microsoft would have had a better intergration. IE all outlook contacts would show in WLM as just contacts and only those in your messanger would get the messanger icon at the side...you can get it like this but it does take some doing in the end i went for a much simpler solution.

I did the synch thet you are made to do the first time you use WLM then i unticked the option to combine and then deleted the duplicates from me device, you only have to synch the first time after that its by choice. remember to untick the synch option if you do delete from the device if you want them to stay on WLM
