just curious, I was wondering how you, as vox owners, are get on with your keyboards now the novelty has worn off?

Is it as useful as you expected it to be?

Do you ever feel silly popping the querty out in mcdonalds?

I've gone back to my I600 because the QWERTY and screen-orientation on the Vox are so poor.

For me, the keys are too close together and too flush with the case (so you can't easily find them without looking at the kbd)

The top row is too close the the screen (so they're harder to get to)

The numeric keys on the front are too near the bottom (so you strain your thumb trying to Text with T9)

The screen re-orientation is too slow (about 1.5-2 seconds) which is just annoying when opening/closing the QWERTY

Not even close in my book - the I600 is miles better.

Bear in mind that I had the I600 first, and got used to it over a couple of months, and that I'm incredibly impatient and expect to "get used" to things within 48 hours.

just to add balance to the debate... :P

i think its great!!! i am a big MSN'er and have absolutely no problem with the size/flushness of the keys. P'raps my delicate digits are less bothered by such things.

i honestly dont see the issue with the top row of keys being too close to the screen, the soft keys are a tad snug but dont get used that often... I can see what Mr.egg means about the screen flipping taking a bit of time but its not an issue - life doesnt move that fast for me! :)

as for the spectacle of slipping out your thumboard in public, i cant say i've seen anyone pointing and whispering in a disparaging way.

one minor point is in that it would have been nicer to have some dedicated symbols keys - its a tiny pain to keep having to hit Fn to get simple things like commas and apostraphes etc but thats the only negative point i can think of!

Interesting topic this I thought :)

I've had my E650/Vox for a couple of weeks now and am pretty happy with it (except for some annoying battery issues) after coming from my aging C500.

To put things in context I mainly use it for texts and calls and accessing my outlook information. I don't do very much in the way of Emails, Web Browsing, IMS (although it is nice to have this available if I need it in an emergency).

So personally I don't use the keyboard very much. I've tried to force myself to use it for texts a few times and always go back to front keypad entry (although still getting used to xT9).

If there was a version of the Vox without the keyboard which weighed 20-30g or more lighter, then I definitely would have gone for that instead (not sure if HTC have any plans for this sort of device!)

Cheers, DEZ :>

I love the keyboard.

Ever since I got my S710 I pretty much stopped using the keypad for anything but typing in numbers when making a call.

I always slide out the keyboard for pretty much everything and have gotten used to the placement og the keys so I can type really fast compared to the old T9.

I'll third that :P

Plus, i dont agree the screen switching is slow either, waiting a couple of seconds is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

When I 1st got the phone I was used to T9, and found I could type quicker with the keypad than the qwerty keyboard. After a while, I found XT9 a real pain as half the words it guessed were wrong, and I ended up reverting to the keyboard anyway. Now I'm used to the keyboard I think it's great. Admittedly, most of my working day, my device is connected to the PC, and used along with Jeyo Mobile Extender so most of my SMS is done via the PC keyboard.

When not at work, the QWERTY is much better for instant messenger, Calendar, email etc, and I also like the FN short keys for Messenger and IE.

The screen switching for me is fine, (I'm overclocking to 252 when the backlight is on, 180 when it's dim and 140 in idle). At 252, the screen switch is much quicker anyway.

The only drawbacks, and they are very minor -

1. the QWERTY doesn't work with the games I have, in particular Virtual Mobile Pool. The screen is landscaped during the game anyway, and I'personally would find it better to play the game using the QWERTY rather than the keypad.

2. I would prefer it if the main keypad was not inactive when the keyboard was out. It would be much quicker to do numeric chars with the keypad instead of having to use the QWERTY and the Fn keys.

My previous device (StrTrk) had everything but Wifi and WM6, so this upgrade is the dog's b****** for me.

and one tip: if you press and hold the keys on your keyboard, it will use the "symbol". no need to press "Fn" + whatever key you need to press. Pretty slick :)

Also why isn't there a home key on the keyboard?

If i'm typing away and want to use a different program, I have to press Home on the keypad then go back to the keypad.

I also find that my shortcut keys seem to get screwed up and stop working after using the keyboard.

The shortcuts are different depending on what country you are in.

In the right corner, some have shortcuts to Internet Explorer and a few other things, but I have some localized keys instead of those shortcuts.

Hello,

I don't find annoying the delay to landscape mode.

I wonder if there is a shortcut to accented characters. I have searched this forum and others but I haven't find any answer. Are there no shortcuts? To look in the symbols table each time is really slow and uncomfortable.

Thanks,

fede

The fastest way I know is to press Fn + N (Sym). That takes you to the accented characters.
