WM6 installed but still no DUN

Hi all, sorry this is going to be a bit of a rant but bear with me......................................

This continues from http://www.modaco.com/I600-Bluetooth-DUN-t257324.html but I felt needed a new topic as I now have WM6.

So I took the plunge and installed WM6, after thinking I had bricked it (I forgot to install the CDMA modem driver duh), I finally got it working. Many thanks to hepics and panateo for their methods.

Recreated my partnership with my Tom Tom 910, and low and behold..... no DUN!!!!!

It did however allow me to download my phone book which was new, also this version does allow you to make calls when the phone is keypad locked.

Now there is a hack for bring DUN online but I have had no luck, if anyone is interested see here for details (Scroll down to installation).

So the long and short of it is that Microsoft have still not given us DUN back, there reason is that the service providers don't want us to have it. All I can say to this is that it can only be some as T-mobile Uk have supported all the extra functions for ages, so I really am getting a bit bored with this excuse.

Mean while I have a phone which can still connect to the internet, act as a modem for my pc, but it can't do what my 3 year old S700i can do standing on it head which is connect via my tom tom or any other DUN enabled device to receive data.

If any one has a solution to this I would be most gratefully as I really do like the I600, but I think it is going to be on ebay soon if this can't be fixed.

As for a little continuation on this crap about Microsoft not being able to implement DUN due to service providers, how come nokia and all the other non ms phones still have this functionality, why o why is it only MS that can't do it.

Yours

Paddy

PS here is a quote from a MS bod from a forum here the post is a long way down so I have included it below, I think this also explains possibly why there is a delay for certain countries in the WM6 roll out even though it same file for all I600s.

Mikecal Said:

Kevin, we've said this before, but I'll say it again. We screwed up. We shouldn't have changed the DUN default. In part due to all the feedback here, we've chosen to fix our mistake by going back to the original setting of having DUN in by default. But we can't go back in time and undo our mistake. All we can do is fix it in the preset. Since there's a lag between what we do and what you see, that means it will get fixed in the future.

I know it's hard to imagine Microsoft being powerless in a situation, but it's true here. You literally have more power with the Mobile Operators than I do. You pay them money, and you can take your business elsewhere. That makes you important to them. We don't buy anything from them. We SELL stuff to them. That gives them all of the power. We can't tell them what to do. They tell US what to do. If we don't like it, they'll gladly just replace our phones with Symbian ones and keep doing business.

They don't do anything with malicious intent. They're running a business. If we're good for their business, they'll work with us. If we're bad for their business, they'll stop. This is how things are done, and it's how things SHOULD be done.

What that does to our reputation is irrelevant.

Our devs are willing to put together a CAB file to let you install DUN directly. However, on checking if we could, we were told that some of the Mobile Operators would be very angry if we did. This is because some of them actively remove it. For those MOs, it wouldn't matter if we put it in by default or not. They'd remove it. I don't know the specific reasons why they do this. They don't share that information with me, nor should they have to.

I don't know where Cingular falls in all of this, but from some of the things you folks have posted here, it sounds like they're one of the ones who actively want DUN removed. I'm sympathetic to your reasons why they shouldn't remove it. But you're preaching to the choir here. It's them you need to convince.

Maybe its of use... this CAB worked for me on my PocketPC/Professional with WM6, and my TomTom Go 500. Just download the ZIP, unzip it to the CAB and run the CAB from the File Explorer on your device.

Hi jchamier,

I had downloaded that one but it didn't do anything :) I will try it again after a hard reset......

I got a feeling it does not work on I600 or any other smart phone with WM6, I read some where that it might work on WM5 and smart phone so I might try to downgrade and see if that works

Let you know what happens......

Hi

Well after hard reset and trying the cab, then by adding the other reg file which seems to not to have the errors in the connection string, still nothing, down graded to wm5, and still nothing, upgraded back again to wm6 so that I can at least make calls when the phone is keypad locked and download the phone book.

Please if anyone has any other ideas let me know.

As I understood u are talking about Serial Port Bluetooth service, right? Interestingly, there was such a menu item in bluetooth setting in WM5 (XXGC6 firmware) but it didn't really work. I've tried it with GPS receiver, also tried to connect to floatMobile sync software - no luck, the port was visible to computer but no connection possible.

The hack, you were talking about, doesn't work for me neither, as I understood it is meant for PPC only. If the problem is software, let's hope someday it would be solved, but... could it be that i600 hardware is the key issue ?

Edit

Sorry did not see this post here on this forum, I will think it best to carry on with the other thread as that one is more about the fix............

The nice people over at XDA developers have fixed it with a nice easy cab, still problems with having to disconnect and reset connection at the end, but I think I can live with that. The post you want is #27 on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...9978&page=3 there is also an a different download location listed in the post. I have tried it and it worked fine, my tomtom 910 now sees it, but I am still having connect issues but I think this is just my lack of knowledge on how to setup a manual connection for t-mobile. I will try on my laptop later on today after I had some sleep ;)

All the best

Paddy
