Battery life on the TyTn II

From my first charge, my phone seemed to last about 4-5 days with mild usage. Now it seems the battery life is decreasing, as last night I checked my phone and it had 50% power left. Left on through the night, screen off, no data connection, only GSM connection active, no running programs and in 8 hours, when I woke up the battery life was 25%.

How is everyone else finding the battery life?

What did you have on i.e. bluetooth or wifi

I didn't have anything on, that why I was suprised it went down 25%. It was just the normal GSM connection, all other icons in comm manager are greyed out. I was sleeping while it went down 25% which is why I switched everything off.

Hi

When you say turned off, how did you turn it off?

If you pressed and held the power button to turn it completely off the battery shouldn't drain at all over night.

If you mean you just turned off the mobile phone in Comms Manager then let it standby (or pressed quickly the power button) it may help to know the phone isn't really off. In standby the phone is sleeping (like you) but can be woken up by programs at their will throughout the night.

In standby the phone seems to wake every hour, mine did last night anyway, for a few seconds to do some work. This in itself should not run down your battery two much as it isn't on for long and the back light isn't turned on in these cases. My battery was 100% when I went to bed with the phone in standby with the mobile signal off, and when I checked this morning it was still 100%.

Problems arise if you install some software that isn't well behaved. This software can prevent the phone from going to sleep, so while you have pressed the standby button to sleep the phone, that may only be turning off the back light and not actually the phone itself. In this case the phone will be on processing something all night and that will drain the power.

Also if you have email set to check every few minutes then again the phone is waking up to do this continuously throughout the night even though it will fail as the mobile/wi-fi connections are turned off.

What other software have you installed? Do you have email set to check every so many minutes? Did you put it proper OFF or just standby?

If you leave the mobile reception on, is it 3G or 2G? If you are in a weak reception area the phone will use more power, especially where 3G reception isn't so good, as the phone will continually be checking the 2G and 3G networks to see if it should switch back to the 2G or back to 3G.

Regards

Phil

One application that does burn my Loox N560's battery really fast was ActiveSync when Exchange Server checking was set to Automatic, no matter if it was connected or not, maybe you should check that

I didn't turn the phone off completely, I just pressed the power button so the screen turned off. The GSM 2g part of the phone was still active, I didn't put it into flight mode. There was no software running on the phone during the night, I had checked task manager and stopped everything. I'll let the battery run right down today and do a full charge before bed tonight and see how it behaves.

Edit: I've ordered a new battery today, so will see if that exhibits the same characteristics.

Well last night the battery life did a lot better. It went from 89% at around midnight to 87% at 6.20am, still sat around doing nothing other than have the 2g phone connected. I think I must have had a background process using up the battery all night when I lost 25%. The only thing I definitely had different was I disabled an alarm that was set but that shouldn't cause such a massive drain, should it...

Hi

That percentage loss sounds about right. Remember 2G is using power and the phone is rated to last around 350 hours in standby, which would mean a loss of around 7% battery power a day when left purely on standby, that equals around 14 days, probably on par or better than most mobiles.

What's your phone signal like? If you place your phone in a 'dead spot' it will go into a high powered signal search mode, which will quickly run the battery down. Also, do you have the phone resticted to GSM only or do you have 3G enabled? 3G is a relatively weak signal, and if the signal goes down, as it can inside a building, the device will keep hunting between 2G and 3G, also draining the battery. Possible your service provider was doing some mast maintenance on the night your phone lost battery, causing it to keep searching for a signal?

Thats not normal. During night, my battery was down only about 2% or 3%, only phone is standby.

Check if there are a lot of applications running on the background, that can eat the power easily.

That would only use minimal power- when in standby, all running processes are suspended, apart from system processes like timers, so the only power needed is that used to maintain the RAM, which is just a few mA

The most likely reason was temporary GSM/3G network problems during the night. Sometimes operators are rolling out network upgrades, which are always scheduled during the night. In that case, base stations are likely to be switched off temporarily and back on again, and so on - means your mobile looses signal, and searches for it over and over. It could also be some kind of network failure (not necessarily planned upgrade), forcing mobile to do the same.

I've had exactly the same issue yesterday in the morning. Before going to bed, I've unplugged charger with 100% battery level. In the morning I've had sth around 65%. First, I thought something was wrong with battery/Kaiser itself, but later when I tried to place a call - I couldn't. I've got dropped call straight away. I've switched to 2G, and bang! Delayed text message arrived, and I was able to place call with no problems, whatsoever. So, there was some kind of T-Mobile's 3G network failure (not for the first time, btw) during the night - and that was the most likely reason of battery going flat so fast...
