However, I'd just like to ensure I've exhausted all the options before I go ahead and upgrade my 'taster' version of tomtom 6 which is probably the best way forward. I have tomtom 5 on my SPV C600 memory card and would love to transfer the files over to the memory card on my VIII ;) In regard to transfering the tomtom files - is it as simple a task as blue toothing the files from my C600 to VIII? The C600 uses adifferent version of TomTom 5, The C600 uses the Smartphone version which is designed for the Smartphone keypad while the Vario III will use the Pocket PC version and is touch screen based. On Monday I bought the Western European map. I had a lot of trouble downloading the map cab file (why oh why does TomTom Home not support download resume). I finally managed to get it downloaded and installed on my phone. At that point I was snookered because I couldn't see any way to install Navigator 6 so I could use the map. I went to bed thinking I'd bought a pup, especially after noticing some small text saying that the maps can only be used if you already own TomTom product. In the morning I rang up TT support and was pointed to this page. I clicked the link and lo and behold the Navigator 6 software downloaded itself into TT Home and then installed itself onto my VIII. I used it this morning for the first time and had no problems getting it to work with the VIII. To make it clear, the process is: 1. Buy the map you want from http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php 2. Download TomTom HOME from http://www.tomtom.com/plus/service.php?ID=17 and install it on your PC 3. Download the map you purchased and the voice and postcode files for the map 4. Go to http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?FID=6736&Lid=1 and click on the Download button. This will download the Navigator 6.30 software. 5. Install the map and software on your Kaiser If you can manage the download 1Gb download for the WE cab file this is a quick and cheap way to buy TT. Western Europe cost me £69.95. If I had only wanted the UK and Ireland it only costs £41.95. Guest Neil5459 Posted October 11, 2007 Report Share Posted October 11, 2007 If you are intent on using TTN5, we published a guide on 4WM Here Though its for WM5 devices, it applies equally to WM6. Be aware, it is a faff- and it always was from WM5 onwards! TTN6 is much easier to install, and of course the maps are much more up to date. The core data for TTN5 maps is getting on for 3-4 years old now, so may not be very accurate- truth to tell, TTN6 maps leave much to be desired in some instances ;) A recent 50 ile journey in Essex gave me at least 6 mapping errors- one of which would have been irrecoverable had I not seen a road sign pointing me in the opposite direction! Oh- & don't forget you can't just copy TomTom maps to a new device and hope they will work- each map will need reactivating on the new device; If you've already used up your 2 activations, you'll need to send TomTom proof of purchase of the new device. I've not been an active beta tester for the last year due to illness butr I was using up to date maps which have now been released. The mapping data itself is pretty sound- I think the TV program about TeleAtlas showed the precision of the road mapping. However, then data is then sent out of UK, to be interpreted manually, which is where I suspect a lot of the errors are occuring. They mainly consist of either false instructions to 'Turn L or R' when it is the main road that turns, or no instruction to 'Turn L or R ' where the main road is incorrectly interpreted as taking the turn. So, good data, but human error in transcribing it. These errors are getting worse- I've used TTN since it was released for the PPC, and see more of these 'misinstructions' since TTN5 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you have traffic updates with them it comes to £34.95 per annum (traffic is £29.95 on its own). It costs £19.99 for a one-off subscription after which there are no ongoing charges. The camera data is very up to date and the interface is excellent.
