Guest georgie.charles Posted October 22, 2007 Report Share Posted October 22, 2007 Can anyone suggest a means for using the GPS capabilities on the Vario/Kaiser while I'm in New York for a few days (I'm UK based) without (1) spending a lot on map software such as TomTom, or (2) spending a lot on roaming data charges for googlemaps or similar to keep updating itself? I'm not convinced the Rough Guide one is GPS linked, or that the A-Z one is available for New York, or that the Travel New York City one is GPS linked (and it's more of a guide book anyway). Am I missing something? ok sorry i did the search under gps maps but pocketgear seems to have left out the fact i put gps in the search, even though on those pages its stated they come under the grouping of gps mapping Anyway ive used Vito smartmap before on my qtek years ago and i know that has gps function built in. the newyork map cost $4 US which is just over £2 Uk http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/mapofnewyork(usstate).html the app itself is $24.95 US wich is about £13 UK its located http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/smartmap.html you can use vito mapmanager for free on your pc to convert other maps to use on the vito smartmap on your phone the good thing about this program is the city maps are cheap to buy Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Check out http://visualit.co.uk/PocketPC/Tube2_nycpro.htm - it has a 3 day trial too, so depending how long you're going for... ;) AFAIK the Rough Guides - http://visualit.co.uk/roughguides/ppc/nyc.htm - aren't GPS enabled - or they weren't last time I checked - but they're pretty cool, i've used them before. Sadly, they only have a 1 day demo. Having looked at all of these options, the Tube2 one seems to be the only one that fits the bill. But as Paul suggested, while the Geo variant claims GPS compatability, there's no mention of it on the newer Pro product. So as he suggests, I've written to them (crediting MoDaCo as Paul asked) to ask them. I'm there for five days, so the free three day trial doesn't quite do it for me. But I'm now running out of time to make a decision. I guess it might be cheaper to live with the data roaming charges and use Googlemaps than spend $20+ on a product I'll probably never use again. One option would be to install the tomtom v6 thats floating around that comes with one free map - and choose New York. I installed it with London as a trial to see if I liked tomtom and can't decide whether to pay £40 for the UK maps or not. The TomTom trial with free city map could well be an option - as it doesn't come with the Vario variant of Kaiser, can someone point me at it? Thanks again for lots of constructive suggestions. Tried downloading their software, but you end up with a zipped folder with no obvious .exe file to run. The instructions say to copy the installation file to your device, the nearest thing to it is one called _setup.exe but copying and running this on the V3 achieves precisely nothing. And I can't see where one finds the maps for NYC (or wherever) even if one does get past the puzzling start. (I may, of course, be being spectacularly dim!)
