Skype and 3 UK today announced their Skypephone, a phone dedicated to, er, Skype usage ;)

What's interesting though, is it seems that Skype usage on 3 is FREE for everyone, Skypephone or not, so long as you are either on a contract, or top up once a month. I have the unlimited internet package on my 3 SIM so I can't really tell, but here's the screenshot from my 'my3' control panel...

Can anyone else without the unlimited package give it a try and let us know how you go? :(

If it IS the case, very cool indeed!

Its not in my 3 control panel, just my txt topup pack and my normal balance

Reckon you'll need a internet topup to get this

I think messenger is only free to pay as you go until the end of the year, but then again, when I get my kaiser with 3, I'll be taking advantage of the 30 days of internet for £5.

MSN has been free on 3 for months!  Unfortunately due to their MSN charging scheme (my guess at least) WLM doesn't work ;)  Not checked for a month or two but they didnt have a compatible version when i last tried!

I still exist

Interestingly, the Skype calls don't actually use VOIP on the 3G network- they're made as normal voice calls over the air, then converted to Skype calls in 3G's core network. (The reason being that voice calls use about 10kbps, while VOIP uses 64-256kbps.)

Free Skype to Skype calls?

Wow. Just like... normal Skype then?

Apart from the fact that they let you use it on their data (which apparently they don't anyway, if it's done over voice) then I'm not seeing what's so great about this...

Being able to call skype contacts for free while mobile is good no? ;)

You say that it's nothing special, then say in your next sentence that you can't do the same on T-Mo!

I think for nothing, it's pretty cool!
