Er...what's Zumobi I hear you ask? Why it's the new name for ZenZui, Microsoft Labs' zooming-user-interface-web-content-browser-thingy - not to be confused with Deepfish, which seems like the browser that never was...

Quote

Zumobi takes accessing, retrieving, and sharing Web-based content  beyond traditional mobile browsers. Through an intuitive, lush,  high-framerate user interface called Tiles, Zumobi allows people to  easily “bounce” in and out of snack-sized bits information they need  throughout the day, and the targeted entertainment they enjoy, while  offering advertisers a better way to connect with consumers through  their mobile phones.

Painful browser loading delays are thing of the  past in the Zumobi experience, thanks to an advanced background data  caching technology. Unlike browsers, background data caching also  permits the user to interact with information and entertainment even  when their phone is beyond wireless service, like on a plane or in a  subway.

Additionally, Zumobi’s open platform offers a better mobile experience  for business partners and developers. Zumobi delivers a device-neutral  platform for building and deploying rich content for mobile phones. We  make it simple and profitable to build and deliver mobile applications  through a single standard for development and deployment plus an  attractive revenue sharing model.

The Beta kicks off in December and you can sign up for it HERE. You can also check out an interactive flash demo of Zumobi HERE.

I subscribed.  I also previously Subscribed to DeepFish too, but as said earlier it appears to have become a "Never was" project.

This striked me as the equilvalent to the iPhone interface to Web parts/widgets.

Bear in mind that a lot of this stuff comes out of the MS research labs.  They aren't really there to make final products, just to investigate new technology and applications on existing tech.  It'll be up to the Mobile Devices people in Redmond to actually implement it as a final app.

I'm not saying thats necessarily the best way of developing new apps, just that its not that surprising when they don't appear as a final product ;)

I still exist

Looks like something interesting to play around with. I'm signed up, so we will soon see if it is.

Tired of waiting for the Tilt, Kaiser, P4550, 8925, Vario III, TyTn II.

Just received my invite email.

Annoyingly though, it says I need to have a US mobile number.

yes, me too :-

To participate in the Zumobi Beta you’ll need the following:
• A U.S.A. mobile phone number
• A data plan with your mobile phone service provider (we strongly recommend this be an unlimited data plan)
• A mobile phone running Windows Mobile 5 or 6

Doh!

There is no reason Zumobi cannot run outside the US – the reason we asked for a US mobile phone number is our systems only support 11 digits at this time.

To use Zumobi outside of the US download the file directly per the forum post http://my.zumobi.com...ums/1/topics/18 – and register using the first 11 digits of your mobile phone number.

Apologies for any confusion or distress – we have no intention to exclude anyone from enjoying Zumobi during the beta!

That said, the focus has been on US English and US based content and we will be internationalizing the experience and content in 2008!

Ah - the second link should read forums/2/topics and NOT /1/
