AT&T rom vs. HTC rom

I have been a windows smartphone use for years, and finally decided to switch over to a touchscreen PDA and today I ordered a Tilt from AT&T (only $124.99 after rebates, thanks to the thanksgiving sale and my premier account!! ;) ).

I have seen countless posts on people flashing their att rom with the htc rom. I have also seen instances of people using the att rom, but stopping it before it installs all the additional att crap. Can someone please let me know the performance differences, what the advantages and disadvantages of having either rom, or at least point me in the right direction of a forum already covering all of this?

If it makes a difference, I do not plan on using the included telenav service if i use the att rom, I would be using 3rd party GPS software. I also want to be able to install the touchFLO cube onto my Tilt, and I don't know if it is any easier or more compatible with one rom or the other.

Any help or advice that will teach me the important differences between the 2 roms, or at least point me in the right direction, will be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you very much!

After looking around the net for the answers and comparing the two, I ended up using hardSPL to flash the original rom that shipped with the HTC Kaiser. Then I installed the HTCCube, Slide2Unlock (so it unlocks like the iphone), Pocket CM and Keyboard CM (excellent free programs), and TomTom. Couldn't be happier with it!

My friend has the Tilt as well, and has the stock ATT rom on it. He saw my flashed phone last nite, played around with it, and is demanding that I do "exactly what I did to my phone" to his because he says mine is a whole lot easier, nicer, and cleaner-looking. So yeah, to answer my own question now, I would use the original HTC rom then install more programs to make it extra nice. Att rom has too much extra baggage anyways.

I'm not sure if you can flash it back to the ATT rom, I know hardSPL allows you to flash your Kaiser with any rom, but why would you want to go back to the att rom??!?

Hey, thanks for the reply. My only concern is I "flash" ( which I am not sure how I would do anyway. If you have a resource, i would love to read it.), the phone to a ROM that is not what i think it is (Think it is a final ROM, and it ends up being a BETA, or does horrible things to my handset). I would just like to have a safety net. - Kevin

EDIT: Well my question seems to have been answered before my post appeared?? - Thanks!

For what it's worth...I got the tilt, and immediately flashed the HTC ROM to it. I found that rom to be a bit buggy (first thing that sticks out in my mind was the HTC Home screen, didn't work as well as I would have liked) so I flashed back to the Tilt ROM, but set up the vanilla version (without bloatware) and have been using that ever since. It seems to run quite well without all the additional crap AT&T felt the need to put on it. I also liked the fact that the Tilt ROM has Sprite backup built in - that IMO is a much more useful program than the Mobile Card Reader built into the HTC ROM.

So, that's my 2 cents. Oh, also, I think the AT&T ROM has a slightly newer radio driver version than the HTC, but I may be wrong (thought I read that somewhere).

is the vanilla version the one where you install the tilt rom but stop it before it tries to install the additional att programs? Could you provide more details on comparing this vanilla version with the htc rom?

I was wondering if anyone knew if prior to flashing your kaiser to the HTC rom, if you had to flash to HardSPL first.

Perhaps you can look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679

This thread seems to imply you have to run the attached zip on the first post before being able to flash your Kaiser to HTC rom

Can someone simply tell me how to install the HTC rom, as I am slightly confused

Thanks

Yeah, it's when you stop the "Installing Customizations" by a soft-reset. Hmmm, details...I only had the HTC ROM for a few days a couple months ago, I just remember when I changed back to the Vanilla Tilt ROM I was happier. I like the fact that it has the Sprite Backup built in (I'm too cheap to buy it), and it doesn't have things like the HTC Home screen built in, which, IMO, is more trouble than it's worth as it seems to be pretty buggy. Otherwise, the Tilt ROM doesn't already have the HSPDA connection option in Settings > Connections, which doesn't matter to me but some people want for battery reasons. The dialer screens are a little different, and I did like the HTC screen a bit more cause the buttons are a little bigger, but not a big deal. Otherwise, I don't really remember why else I decided to stick with the Tilt ROM, but I've been happy with it so far...I guess a good reason for a noob to stick with the vanilla ROM is that it doesn't require a HardSPL, which would make it easier to return the Tilt for warranty coverage (otherwise you have to reverse the HardSPL to revert it back to factory condition.)

Where did you get the AT&T Rom??? I would like to switch to the HTC Rom at least to see if I liked it but need to be able to go back to the AT&T Rom if there are any problems or need to exchange for warranty reasons.

Over at xda-developers.com, they have both the HTC original ROM and the Tilt ROM, they're in one of the stickies there.
