For my BJ-II, the MyLocation feature in Google Maps only works for me if I am in a GPRS/EDGE network.  I can never get mylocation to work for me if I am on a UMTS/HSDPA tower.  Does anyone else see this?

I have it working in 3G areas too. It takes forever to initially find the satellites though. I sometimes have to get the error message and retry it before it works.

There is some confusion here I think between the My Location feature that uses tower positioning and the GPS positioning...

thanks paul...im referring to just cell tower assisted GPS, not satellite GPS.  Does anyone else see the same thing for cell tower assisted GPS?

Interesting T-Mobile in the UK has issues with 'My Location' on 3G. Maybe Google just haven't mapped the 3G towers yet, or the coverage isn't dense enough perhaps?

Generally works fine for me, on T-Mobile, though certain days it has issues.

Finds me to within 1700 metres using cell location, with "REAL GPS" turned off in the menu, and my local tower is a 3G mast - albeit, it's only yards away from me.

But the actual 'dot' of where it thinks I am, based on Cell Tower location, not real GPS, is almost perfect most times - usually guessing the very street I live in.

SOME days however, it just won't work at all.

So maybe this is what the OP is seeing?

almost, but not quite.  From my experience, "My Location" NEVER works for cell-assisted location when using 3G.  Only in standard GPRS/EDGE.

No biggie, I was just wondering if anyone else had the same experience.

I have the same experience here in Houston. Does not work when my phone shows 3G. Only when it switches to EDGE in some regions, does it show me My Location (using cell towers, with GPS turned off). I wish Google will fix this.

In 3G, when it says location is temporarily unavailable, I can still go to Menu->Help->About and scroll to the bottom. There, it gives the Cell tower info (next to a label called myL) so its got to be a minor fix to read this info in to the map - cmon Google, you can do it! :(

My experience is the same as the original poster's.

Google Maps' "My Location" feature does not work when the phone is using 3G... only when it's on E or G.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they implement a fix/workaround.
