i was planning a trip yesterday on my vario 3 using tomtom navigator 6. however, when entering the postcode in, it doesnt recognise anything after the first space if that makes sense. eg - B60 it will recognise but as i type more, it doesnt guess the whole postcode and i have to put the street name in.

so my friend took out his pda which had tomtom 5 preinstalled on it and he is able to find an address using the postcode only and it recognises the whole thing. can anyone help me with this or tell me where i am going wrong?

I just had the very same problem today, I dont get that with the same version maps and application on my vario but I did today on  my tytn II. they have the identical files, same POI, same map version, same version of tomtom

Edit: I just tested both devices, the vario let me enter 5 digits and found the address, the tytn II wouldnt let me go past 3 digets of the postcode and I had to put in the street address to locate it but it still wouldnt recognise anything above 3 digits of the postcode and wouldnt enter anymore. this is a serious bug to say the least. Im sure it didnt use to be like this when i first installed tomtom. I may have to reintall it. akso I tried doing a factory reset of tomtom and it still persisted after i wiped out all the stored POI and favorites

it used to be like it on my C500 with tomtom mobile too :(

its annoying because i want to be able to find an address using just the postcode, not the first half of the postcode and the street name

Ok fixed it. check your sd card and check to see if the zip folder is still there, for some odd reason my zip folder went missing. I stuck it back in from a backup I keep on my pc and it now works fine with 5 digit postcodes :(

i dont have a zip file on my storage card. just 2577, the map and voices folder...

you want me to upload the zip folder? you do know its a zip as un zip code as in post code not zip file

on the sd card you need the tomtom map folder, Raster folder, folder, voices folder, itn filder, licences folder, schemes folder and zip folder. the 2577 folder is just the installer and autostart file. its only purpose is to install tomtom to the device

ok here is the zip folder from my backup of my sd card, its got the post codes for the uk and western europe as thats the maps I have, if you dont need the western europe post coded delete them or just leave them there they wont do any harm http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6SZ3R2IS

Just download that and extract the folder to your documents folder on your pc or in your device and mnove the zip folder to your root directory on the sd card

Ok I use the sd card version I got when i was using my vario. its registered with the maps I have so rather than buying the maps over i just transfered the map registration over to my tytn II so its different from the version you have. but either way it still needs a zip folder with the Great_Britain.postal file and Great_BritainPostal.ver file

hmmm dont know, have you tried soft resetting then trying again? I suppose that zip folder is only for the sd card version. check with tomtom support to see if you can find anything out through them

just to clarify what you said, you moved the zip file or zip folder? i did compress the folder and files to upload it and it wont work untill the folder has been extracted from the rar file you cant just move it over to the sd card while its still compressed

yes you have to unzip it. its a bit confusing as its in a zip file but its a zip folder inside the zip file. Im confusing myself now :(

If that still doesn't work, here's what TomTom has within their support/answer section:

If you use a map of Great Britain or The Netherlands and you want to enter a postcode rather then a city name you can do this as follows:

1. Select 'Navigate to...' in the main menu.

2. Select the arrow to switch to the second 'Navigate to...' menu page.

3. Tap on the 'Postcode' icon

4. Here you can enter the full post code of your destination.

Note: If you selected 'Address' instead of 'Postcode' you will only be able to enter the first 4 digits of the postcode

For Pocket PC users only:

If you did select 'Postcode' and you are still not able to enter the full postcode please follow the steps below.

5. Exit TomTom NAVIGATOR

6. Open the 'File Explorer' on your Pocket PC

7. Go to 'My Device' and then select 'Storage Card' or 'SD card' (depending on the Pocket PC)

8. Tap and hold the folder called 'ZIP' (which contains the full postcode database), then select 'Copy'

9. Now go back to 'My Device' and open the folder 'My Documents'

10. Tap and hold anywhere on the white screen, then select 'Paste'. The Folder 'ZIP' will now be copied from the SD card to the internal memory of your Pocket PC.

11. Start TomTom NAVIGATOR again to repeat step 1 to 4 which should now allow you to use full postcode search.

are they in the zip folder? so you have a folder names "zip", in that folder you have the Great_BritainPostal.ver & Great_Britain.Postal inside the folder, that folder is placed in the root directory of the sd card.

you cant get to postcode without first tapping address. the way i do it is navigate to>address>postcode>enter post code. tap the correct street and i get house number, i put the house number and select done

Maybe it's because I am using U.S. maps (even though this is a GB version of the TyTN II) but I downloaded a US city. I do have two separate choices (Street and house number OR Zip Code. On TomTom's support site, they show the same thing - two separate choices - except it is called "postcode" and not zip code (as expected). This is displayed in a screenshot regarding what is new for Navigator 6. Here:

http://www.tomtom.com/support/product.php?...=1&FID=5738

I hope this helps. I don't want to create more confusion since my map is different.

when i hit navigate to, i have 'address'. i hit that and i get:

city centre

street and house number

postcode

crossing or intersection

so the postcode should allow me to put in a full postcode and it should bring up the street name for me. all i should have to enter is the postcode and house number. i watched my friend do it yesterday on his!

and i just tried it and it works! :(

i didnt put the files in a folder called 'zip'.

thanks so much for all your help dolbe :D

The main thing is you now have it working now :D . its odd that you didnt need to put the files in the zip folder. so are they still in the root directory of the sd card?
