What is the difference between unlocking a phone and software unlocking a phone? I am going to use the SDA Application unlocker and dont know if that will take care of my "unlocking" needs. Thanks!

Unlocking phone = enabling it to be used with foreign sim cards... (foreign meaning, any carrier that the phone was not locked to.)

Software unlocking = enabling certain programs that didn't get the "okay" from microsoft to run.

That is correct.  Though it is likely that you'll need to have it software unlocked for any unofficial unlocking methods.  Unless you call ATT and get the unlock code...

I wanted to call ATT but my wife is no longer with ATT. She was with them for 4 years. I thought about calling anyway but I read they will ask for an ATT account #...

They probably will, but it couldn't hurt to try...see what happens if you say you don't have one or just don't give one....

Well I got my wife to call and we got a rep on the phone who was nice enough to provide us it. And when she put us on hold to retrieve the code we were disconnected. Sigh. I guess we will try again today. Does this code permanently unlock the phone...

It should, but no guarantees.  Software updates might relock it, etc...
